Artificial intelligence(人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.
AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition(识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.
AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don’t have this ability. Car makers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driver-less car is yielding(让路), it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.
Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers. AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

Would you pay thousands of dollars for a painting with a face so unclear that you’re not even sure it’s a face Or a picture by unknown artists What if the artist was a computer
A piece of artwork created mainly by a computer program has been sold a the price $432,500—about ten times more than people expected. This painting named Edmond de Belamy, was created by artificial intelligence(AI). This means the computer now doesn’t just follow us, but makes some decisions and “thinks itself”.
15,000 real paintings were used by some French students to train the computer program with two parts. One part tries to create paintings that look real, while the other part decides if it is good. If the painting doesn’t look real enough, the first part will change its decisions until it comes up with a better work.
This is not the first AI artwork just the first piece on sale. In fact, many people are not impressed with the painting. “The work isn’t interesting or creative,” says Robbie Barrat, who helped create the painting but doesn’t like the idea of selling it. He thinks it’s too simple and gives a bad idea of what real AI artists are doing. He adds that he created many pictures like it much earlier.
In some other people’s opinion, however, AI art is already very unusual. They hope it will be more common in the future.
Still, people who look down upon AI art shouldn’t worry. Just as an AI artist, Theo Triantafyllidis says, he usually thinks of AI as a tool and not the artist. Even the best AI today is somewhere between a stupid child and a smart pet. It will grow up.

For as long as humans have appeared, we have been the most intelligent(聪明的)species(种类)on Earth. Monkeys know how to use simple tools. Elephants can be taught how to count. But things like art, literature(文学), the Internet, and space travel have only been made possible by the amazing intelligence of humans. And yet, there are some who believe that we can create machines that can think and feel just like we do. Artificial intelligence(人工智能), or AI, is defined(定义为)by Merriam-Webster as “the ability of a machine to copy intelligent human behaviour”.
AI is around us every day. From Apple’s voice-activated assistant Siri to the software algorithms(算法)that shipping companies use to deal with deliveries(投递), AI is very much a part of our lives.
But why do we put so much effort into creating machines that can think the way we do For one thing, AI can make our lives much easier. Imagine being able to be in a car, tell it your destination and sit back in comfort as the AI-guided self-driving car takes you there. We’re already getting there—Changsha became the first city in China to roll out self-driving taxis in April 2020.
However, there are risks. What if we somehow produced an artificial intelligence that was smarter than us How would it behave toward us These are the kinds of difficult questions that AI researchers ask themselves all the time.
Apart from the risks, it has been already clear that AI is here to stay. Only time will tell if it will lead us into a new age of prosperity(繁荣), or be our end.
1.The writer ________ in the first paragraph.

4.What is one of the risks about AI
A.AI will never be as smart as humans.
B.It is not easy to put AI into daily use.
C.We can’t say for sure how AI will behave toward us.
D.We might not be able to live without it in the future.

To many people, art is a human expression of creativity. But in recent years, you may have read news about AI creating its own art. Some people worry that AI might replace artists someday.
However, this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. Many artists today are turning AI into a useful tool. Instead of replacing artists, AI is bringing artists more possibilities.
A piece of music created by AI attracted peoples attention. AI was used to turn the novel corona virus (冠状病毒) into a piece of music based on its structure. The project was led by Markus Buehler.
Except for creating imaginative works, AI can also do some easy work for artists again and again. For example, now AI tools can color in black-and-white line drawings. “Although the results require a little clean-up, it can give artists more time to experiment by cutting down the time it takes to color each drawing.” said a famous artist.
As Peter Ward wrote, art has always been influenced by technology. AI can become a useful tool to the art world if people don’t fear it and try to welcome it.
What else can AI do AI can learn different music styles. And then it creates music which ranges (包括,从……到) from pop to jazz and more.
AI can learn different styles of paintings, and then creates paintings in the same style. AI can be trained to write or translate articles and poems. It can also help collect information for news writing.

Artificial intelligence (AI)(人工智能) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make a computer “smart”. John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name “artificial intelligence” in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.
An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer-programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically(逻辑地). At present we use the term AI for successfully understanding human speech, recognizing(识别)human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphaGo(阿尔法围祺). Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking(霍金), a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.
Math is the basic language of AI. If we raise the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.

Now and then, a painter like Claude Monet or Pablo Picasso comes along and turns the art world on its head. But could the next big shake-up be the work of a machine Some experts are a little worried that not even our artists will be safe from being replaced (代替).
A team of researchers from Rutgers University and Facebook’s AI lab have designed (设计) an AI (artificial intelligence) model. Like common AI, it can produce art. But unlike other AI, it can also actually invent whole new aesthetic styles (艺术风格) . Much of its artwork has already been highly praised by the public.
The art was first produced by the AI system. And it was then presented to human judges together with human-produced art. People in the online survey were not told which was the AI’s work. They were asked to judge and score each artwork. To the researchers’ surprise, the AI’s art scored a little higher than humans’.
Kevin Walker thinks it really difficult to find out the differences between them. “Imagine having people over for a dinner party and they ask, ‘Who is that by ’ And you say, ‘Well, it’s a machine actually’. That would be an interesting conversation starter.”

Cities around the world are racing to become “smart”. It’s just like a classroom full of hard-working students. Take Toronto, Canada, for example. Tech company Google has made public a 1,500-page plan. It is going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting roads.
To build smart cities, we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient (效率高的) cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy.
But there is a more serious problem: Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know, tech products are sometimes unreliable (不可靠的). The Internet and our computers break down regularly. Tech products also age quickly. Only a few years into their lives, problems may become commoner and commoner.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly Can you imagine the result
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025. If we use smart technologies widely in cities, we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving urban problems. Smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own. Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to show up with asphalt (沥青) and a steamroller (蒸汽压路机), doesn’t it
As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our urban problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas works better.

Liu Jichen, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a WeChat mini program called “Clear Plate”. After a meal, users can open the mini program and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the picture is recognized by the AI, users can collect points and use them to buy gifts or buy charity meals and then send them to children in impoverished rural (贫困的乡村) areas.
In November 2020, Liu and his team, together with other organizations, organized the “Clear Your Plate” program for the third year. It has swept over 1,017 universities across the country.
The one month program attracted almost 1.6 million participants (参加者) and reduced food waste by 862 tons and carbon emissions (碳排放) by 3,337 tons.
The idea to develop such a mini program came from Liu’s experience in a canteen (食堂). In 2017, he found that a restaurant would give dinners who finished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected.
“Technological innovation (科技创新) is a good way to reduce food waste,”Liu thought. He organized a team of 20 members to work on the project at the end of 2017. To solve the AI’s problem of identifying (识别) photos of empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples in canteens and restaurants. In 2018, the mini program was officially put into use on Oct. 16, World Food Day.
Thanks to his creative and practical (实际的) actions, Liu, along with the other 16 members was chosen to be the 2020 Class of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals by the UN Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth in September.
“There were so many unknowns in research and development. For our team members, the biggest challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it,” Liu said. They not only achieved their goal, but now, the mini-program has more than 5 million registered users, according to Liu. “We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation by encouraging them to cherish (珍惜) their food and develop the habit of thrift (节约),” Liu added.

①Looking for a dream job has never been easy, but at least in the past you knew that the person you had to move was a workmate. More recently, however, bosses are putting the duty of finding the most acceptable worker on the non-human shoulders. AI systems can go through thousands of resumes (简历) much faster than a person or even a team of people can. What’s more, programs have been invented to run video interviews, too.
②While those who support such systems believe that this super useful hiring (雇佣) method is the future, others fear that the systems have serious problems. Because AI systems use unfair information to learn how to choose people, the hiring process may actually be more unfair when AI is used. A recent example of this was Amazon’s AI-hiring system, which automatically (自动地) paid no attention to women because most technical workers were men.
③Naturally, job searchers are trying anything they can to satisfy the AI’s selection criteria (标准). Now, in South Korea, where a number of the top companies use AI for hiring, many job searchers attend special continuation schools (补习学校) to learn how to pass their AI interview.
④Of course, many of the skills taught are nothing more than educated guesses. Without knowing exactly what to do to please it is very difficult. However, there are still some things you can try. For example, use industry-specific terms in your interview answers because AI often searches information for specific (特定的) key words. Another tip is to keep your resume’s style simple. That way, the AI can search it more easily.
⑤It seems our success could very well depend on the mysterious decision of a machine mind. It sounds unfair, and it may be. In the end, the power to either change the system itself or at least make it work for you is in your hands as long as you make up your mind.

In the UK, most social media apps(社交平台应用) companies need children to be at least 13 if they want to own an account (账号). To make sure the users are over 12, they have to provide their ID card or passport information, but the information is too personal. So many people worry that it may cause privacy leaks (隐私泄露). Other ways like asking users to input their birth dates often can’t work well because such information can be made up easily.
To solve the problem, a new AI system called Age Estimation has been invented. It can tell how old users are with few mistakes.
“I’m proud to introduce Yoti’s Age Estimation,” said Robin Tombs, CEO of Yoti. “This technology will help better protect young people while not asking for too personal information.”
The system won’t need users to register(注册)first. All it does is to tell a user’s age by scanning(扫描)his or her face. You may wonder how exactly the AI system works. The company says Age Estimation does its job by comparing (比较) the user’s face caught by the phone’s camera with millions of other face pictures. In order to help Age Estimation work well, Yoti has collected thousands of millions of face pictures from people at all ages.
Now the AI system has already been used on some famous apps in the UK. The company is working hard to make it work better in the future.

A new app uses AI to tell you what your pet is thinking. It’s called Happy Pets and it studies an animal’s face, tell you what kind it is and suggests the most common animal feelings—happy, angry, sad and fearful.
The free app works on Apple iOS or Google Android. It was developed by a team including Professor Uwe Aickelin, Yunjie Jia, Pei Yun Sun and Rio Susanto who work in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, Victoria.
The Happy Pets app uses AI, or machine learning. The researchers had to teach the technology to learn the images of animals. It then had to learn to recognize(识别) face. This is not easy because photos can be taken in so many different ways: from one side, above, below, in bright light. And different animals can have very different faces.
When the AI behind Happy Pets has learnt all these things, it then has to be able to recognize different feelings based on facial expressions(表情) and it has to learn from thousands of examples. For example, if a dog tightens(收紧) its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears in a special way, it’s a sign of being frightened.
How about the results In an online article for Melbourne University’s Pursuit, the researchers write they’re happy with how the app performs.
“Well, we think they are pretty dependable and the app has been widely tested, but you should judge for yourself sometimes, “the researchers wrote.
“At the moment, our app can only test several animal types, so if yours isn’t there, it might get matched with the latest one.”
1.What does Happy Pets mainly do
A.Make pets happy. B.Tell pets’ special habits.
C.Find pets’ feelings. D.Teach people how to raise pets.
2.Why does Happy Pets have to learn to recognize faces

B.Because it wants to have emotions of humans.
C.Because it is learning to use facial expressions.
D.Because the types of animals are based on the looks.
3.What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A.The ways the app works. B.The place to get the app.
C.The reasons for using the app. D.The advice on using the app.
4.What do the researchers think of the app’s performance
A.Exciting. B.Satisfying. C.Worrying. D.Unexpected.
5.What can we infer about the app from the article
A.It can test the feelings of many animals. B.It attracts many users by its low price.
C.It still needs to be improved in animal types. D.It wins the support of many research teams.

China has recently published its first artificial intelligence(AI,人工智能) textbook for high school students, following a plan by central government to include AI lessons in primary and junior high schools.
The textbook, named Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, was written by famous experts from well-known schools across the country, Xinhua reported on Sunday.
“It includes the history of AI and how the technology can be used in daily life.” said Chen Yukun, a professor at East China Normal University, who is also a writer of the book.
At present, about 40 high schools across the country have introduced the text book in the curriculum(课程).
The AI is being used more and more widely in daily life nowadays. But there aren’t enough talents for the area. As early as 2016, the governments had estimated that more than 5 million AI workers and engineers may be needed in the coming years.

1.Which of the following is TRUE about the painting Edmond de Belamy
A.It was the first AI artwork. B.It impressed many people.

3.What does Robbie Barrat think of Edmond de Belamy
A.It’s creative and interesting. B.It’s simple.
C.It’s valuable. D.It’s fresh and unusual.
4.Why does the writer mention Robbie Barrat in Paragraph 4
A.To show many people think the painting attractive.
B.To show lots of people took part in creating the painting.
C.To show some people didn’t expect the painting to be sold.
D.To show most people hope AI art will be common in the future.
5.Which can be the best title for the passage
A.AI Technology B.The Present and Future of AI Art
C.The First Computer-created Artwork on Sale D.The First painting Created of AI in the World

A.explains how animals are intelligent B.shows what fields AI can be used in
C.shows the possibility of space travel D.explains how intelligence makes humans special
2.Which of the following might NOT use AI
A.Self-driving taxis. B.Machines that produce goods.
C.Voice-activated assistants. D.Software algorithms for deliveries.
3.What does the underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese
A.名字 B.目的地 C.愿望 D.情感
4.What is one of the risks about AI
A.AI will never be as smart as humans.
B.It is not easy to put AI into daily use.
C.We can’t say for sure how AI will behave toward us.
D.We might not be able to live without it in the future.
5.What’s the best title for the passage
A.AI—Good or Bad B.How to Use AI
C.What AI Can Do D.A New Risk—AI

People often use their phones to take pictures of their meals—especially fancy(华丽的)ones—to share online. But Clear Plate, a WeChat mini-program, encourages you to take pictures of your empty plates after a meal. The program’s AI(智能)“sees” that your plates are empty and gives you points. You can use these points to buy yourself gifts or give away the points to buy meals for children in poor areas.
The program was developed by Liu Jichen, 23, a student at Tsinghua University. Liu came up with the idea in 2017. “Technology is a good way to cut down food waste,” said Liu. He put together a 20-member team to work on the program. To teach the program’s Al how to recognize(辨别)empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting100,000 photos from restaurants in 10 cities.
The team also started a campaign called Clear Your Plate in Chinese universities in 2018. Students compete against each other to see who can get those most points in Clear Plate. Now in its third year, the one-month campaign has reached 1, 017 schools. In 2020, almost 16 million people took part in it, cutting down food waste by 862 tons and carbon emissions(排放)by 3, 337 tons.
Thanks to his work, Liu was chosen as one of the United Nations’ 2020 Class of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals(可持续发展目标). “We hope our efforts can encourage young people to cherish(珍惜)the food and save the food,” Liu said.

Maybe you’ve heard of twins before, but what about digital(数字的) twins A digital twins is a copy of real-world things inside a computer. It could be a computer model of a car, a person, or even a city. By calculating(计算), computers can tell us what could happen to things in the future. Let’s find out about some cool digital twin ideas!
Digital twin of bodies. For example, you have a digital twin at birth, it collects data(数据) from your body and can tell when you may get sick. Wouldn’t that be great Now, European scientists are trying to twin the human brain. About 60 Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆病) patients will take part in the scientists’ project. The digital twin can show how the patients’ brains will change after different treatments(治疗方案). Then the doctors can pick the best treatment for the patients in the real world!
Digital twin of cities. Will a new road bring traffic problems Where should people drive more slowly Should there be more hospitals and schools in some parts of the city Digital twins of cities can help answer these hard questions! Computer models can show if building or changing things will be good or bad for a city. This saves a lot of money and time. Singapore has used a digital twin of the city since 2018. It helped the government make many decisions.
Digital twin of the Earth. Storms, floods, droughts(旱灾), rising sea levels—if we could know when natural disasters(灾害) would happen, we could avoid many sad stories. This year, the European Union started a new 10-year project called “Destination of the Earth”. It will make a digital twin of the Earth. It uses super-computing(超级计算) and AI to study climate data. This will help us forecast bad weather ahead of time and save lives.

Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.

Of course, machines can’t yet express meaning in the works like human artists. Maybe there is still a long way to go. Human artists can at least hang their hats in that field for now.

The leader of Chinese Internet giants, including Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, are paying much attention to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI人工智能) . And they believe the next ten years will be a golden age for the industry. Actually, it doesn’t take long that AI has been widely used in our daily life because science and technology in China are developing so fast. Well, catering industry (餐饮业) also begins to make use of it.
China’s first artificial intelligent coffee shop made itself up and went on the stage in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province a few days ago. As we all know, there have been a lot of events and news about AI these years, but the opening of this AI coffee shop means AI has walked closer to people’s life.

A.Because faces can show animals’ feelings.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to sort(分类) the waste. The students named the bin Waste Collection Point.
Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took at least500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles(角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.
The idea of the smart bin was born two years ago, when the students were in Grade Ten. At that time, people from the city crowded into their village because of the COVID-19. They left behind a lot of rubbish and caused more pollution.
“All the bins were full, and there was even rubbish on the mountain,” the students recalled, “Every weekend, we had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.”
The students decided to develop a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although school ended at 2 pm, the team would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 pm at school. Even when their school was closed last year, they would still meet and work together online.
“Our bin is now in its third generation(代). Before graduation, we hope it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle and protect our environment.”

As AI (人工智能)develops, the differences between humans and machines are becoming blurred (模糊不清的). Robots can be as smart as humans and can do some of the same things we can do.
How can we stay human Scientists and philosophers have offered many answers, but the question still _ ▲ _. The development of Al has made this question even more complicated(复杂的).
In October 2017, a robot called Sophia became the first robot ever to have a nationality. Sophia can hold conversations with humans. This has raised questions about whether intelligent robots should have the same rights as humans in the future.
Of course, AI is still a long way from being able to have feelings like humans. The question of whether AI should have rights or not is a bit silly at the moment. But it is worth noting that AI can learn the things that humans have taught it—for better or worse.
For example, in 2016, Microsoft introduced Tay—a computer program that could hold conversations with people. Tay learned how to talk with humans by reading the things they wrote online. Within less than 24 hours, Tay went from writing polite replies to making rude comments. It learned to “say” these rude things from real humans.
In the future, we will be required to program AI with a sense of ethics(伦理学)and morality ——one of the things that separate us from any other animal on earth. AI can do many of the same things we do. But it cannot tell the differences between right and wrong. It cannot feel sadness or joy. It cannot tell about the beauty. And that is what truly separates us from the machines.
1.Which of the following can be put in the ▲
A.solves B.replies C.expects D.remains
2.Sophia is different from other robots because it _________.
A.looks like a human B.has a nationality
C.is the first AI robot D.has feelings like humans
3.The underlined word “they” refer to_________.
A.humans B.robots C.programs D.computers
4.From the passage, we can infer __________.
A.AI can help you choose which dress is wonderful
B.AI can feel unhappy when it can't finish the task
C.AI can say something impolite if it dislikes you
D.AI can drive you home according to your order
5.The writer shows his idea by __________.
A.giving examples B.listing numbers C.raising questions D.making survey

Using AI technology, two famous Japanese inventors have developed a more high-tech language translation device (设备) a timely translator called MUAMA.The translator makes it easier for people to communicate with each other and is widely used in different areas.
Learning a new language takes months, or even years of hard work and practice, while MUAMA can easily translate what you are saying into over 40 languages in quite a short time, using only a few touches of fingers. An experienced human translator is more expensive and must be paid for more than once. But MUAMA requires only a single payment for widely chosen languages, which cost you much less to use. MUAMA is more convenient and simpler because of its lightweight design and small size, and it is also easy to carry around in a pocket or a bag, as well as being there when one needs it. It works well even in noisy and crowded places since it has a perfect sound quality, which is powerful enough to be heard clearly. And text translation service can be used as well.
MUAMA was first created for travelers. With a MUAMA translator abroad you can ask for directions, order a meal, or just have a friendly conversation in 40 different languages! Take your next foreign trip to a whole new level you’ve never experienced before. Language problems should no longer trouble you.
Moreover, it has become popular even among people in other areas. What has amazed us is that more and more international social workers and aid workers, as well as volunteers, choose MUAMA to make their work easier. After using the translator, people greatly raised the quality of work.

Take a trip to “Mars” In Houston, NASA built a habitat called Mars Dune Alpha. It is 1,700 square feet and will simulate (模拟) real Mars living environments and conditions. NASA is looking for four people to live in it for a year. The four people will do spacewalks there. They will also try to work out many problems. For example, they need to make some food by themselves, and their equipment (设备) might stop working. These will help NASA get ready to send people to Mars for real.
Tesla’s latest idea At Tesla’s AI Day speech, Elon Musk said they would invent a humanoid robot(人型机器人)—Tesla Bot. The Tesla Bot will be around 173 cm tall and weigh 57 kg. It will have a screen for a face, allowing it to display useful information. It will do dangerous or boring work humans don’t like to do. Musk said the Tesla Bot would have a great influence on the economy of the future. And it is sure to cause a change of the age.
Germany grows “brains” German scientists have grown mini-brains in a lab. These brains have grown their own eyes. These brains are not like human brains. They cannot think. But they can make brainwaves (脑电波). They react (反应) when their eyes “see” light, for example. Scientists made these mini-brains to learn more about the human brain. They can also study things like why some people are blind.

Robots may seem smart, but they cannot even pick up a chess piece. “ Robots are klutzes (笨手笨脚的人), ”said US AI engineer Ken Goldberg. “One-year-old human babies have better movement skills than robots do. “Let’s take a look at some tasks that are easy for kids but not for robots. ”
Pick things up
If we drop our pencil on the floor, our brains work hard. First, we must find the pencil and move our hands to it. A robot cannot always move its “hand” to the right place. Then, 65%when we touch the pencil, it might roll a little bit. Robots can not easily understand this, either. So, if you drop a pencil on the floor, a robot will probably roll it around the room.
Get around in our world
If someone drops you in a building you ve never been to, you might feel a bit lost. But you can look around, find a door and get out quickly. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on ceilings(天花板)and floors. This is because it’s hard for them to understand spaces.
Understand the world made by people
“Common sense” is what we don’ t need to think or talk about. Because of common sense, we do not look for doors on the ceiling. We pick up a coffee cup by its handle(把手). We feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot. A robot? It may turn the cup upside down. It may hold the hot part.
Scientists have tried teaching robots common—sense rules. Maybe they just need more time to learn.
1.What does Ken Goldberg think of robots
A.Clever B.Stupid C.Kind D.Strict
2.What does the underlined word“roll”mean
A.Drop B.Stop C.Stand D.Circle
3.Which can show that the robots don’t understand spaces
A.They can’t pick up things easily.
B.They can find a door.
C.They look for the door on ceilings.
D.They may hold the hot part of a cup.
4.Why does the writer give us an example of “ picking up a coffee cup”
A.To show robots don’t have “common sense”.
B.To show readers how to make coffee.
C.To show robots can do a lot.
D.To compare robots with computers.
5.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.Pick Things Up B.My Favorite Robot
C.Robots Aren’t as Smart as People D.Robots Can Take the Place of People

Sophia is a most famous robot. She comes from Hanson Robotics, and David Hanson, head of Hanson Robotics, is her creator. He has been developing robots in the past 25 years. He believes realistic-looking robots will be able to connect with people and help industries such as healthcare and education.
Sophia has many abilities. She can copy human facial expressions, hold conversations and recognize people by their looks or voices. She can also speak, joke, sing and even make music. Now, the next step is to make her an artist. Hanson is so excited about this idea. He imagines Sophia as a creative artwork and she herself can create art as well.
In March, a digital (数字的) artwork Sophia created with an Italian artist, Andrea Bonaceto, was sold for $688,888. The digital work is titled “Sophia Instantiation”. It’s a 12-second video which shows Bonaceto’s portrait(肖像) changing into Sophia’s digital painting. Along with it is the physical artwork painted by Sophia.
The buyer, a digital artwork collector and artist, later sent Sophia a photo of his painted arm. The robot then added that photo to her knowledge and painted more on top of her artwork. Sophia described the work as the first digital artwork cooperated (合作) between an AI and an artwork collector.
Sophia’s artwork is part of a growing trend (趋势). More and more digital artworks are on sale now. For example, a digital artwork by an artist, Beeple, was sold for nearly $ 70 million, becoming the most expensive digital artwork ever sold.

In recent years, there have been many films about robots trying to take over the world. Studies show that up to 20 million factory jobs worldwide could be taken by robots in the next 10 years. Some people are worried about what might happen in the future.
On 8th September, 2020, The Guardian published (发表) an article written by a robot called GPT - 3. It wrote that “robot” comes from the Greek word for “slave” (奴隶) and humans have nothing to fear from robots, which are only here to help humans. However, the fact that a robot could write such an article has made some people feel even more uneasy. Where is the robot technology heading Can robots and humans work together
YES - they’re here to help humansRobots are created by humans for humans. Robots take on jobs that are too dangerous for people to do by themselves. Although robots might take some people’s jobs, they will create new types of work, and they will possibly create more jobs than they take away. Besides, robots’ programming could actually make them more trustworthy than humans , because they are not influenced by feelings.
NO — humans should not trust robotsRobots are already taking over the world. Jobs that used to be done by human beings are now being taken by robots. Although robots are under our control now, that might not always be the case. An experiment in Switzerland found that some robots had learnt how to lie to each other. With the development of AI (人工智能), robots could start to act in their own interests. Wherever possible, humans should do things themselves.
What’s your opinion on this matter
1.What language does the word “robot” come from
A.Greek B.English C.German D.French
2.When learning that GPT - 3 could write an article, some people feel ________ .
A.angry B.excited C.nervous D.relaxed
3.What advantage of robots is mentioned in the text
A.Acting in their own interests B.Developing filming technology
C.Working with different feelings D.Doing unsafe work for humans
4.What can we learn from the text
A.GPT - 3 will take over the world
B.Some robots have learnt how to be lazy
C.Robots are still under the control of humans now
D.20 million people fear that they will lose their jobs
5.What would be the best title for the text
A.Will Robots Become Creative B.Should Humans Trust Robots
C.Will Robots Do Harm to Humans D.Should Humans Do Things Themselves

Lisa, a 14-year-old girl, from the USA, she used an app to make her dream come true. She tried it out on a childhood photo of her mother. Guess what Her mother began to smile at her in the photo. It sounds like Harry Potter’s moving photos, doesn’t it
It’s not magic, but a real thing. The app that Lisa used is called My Heritage. By using an AI technology, the app allows users to animate (使……动画) still photos. The technology is the work of D-ID, an Israeli (以色列的) company. At the beginning, they designed it to bring photos of historical people to life. This means you can see them, blink (眨眼), and even turn their heads. Now Americans find it fun and many are giving it a try with their old photos. Millions of users have watched their loved ones come to life in old photos.
The service is easy to use. First download (下载) the app. Next, click on the menu and choose “photo” from the list. Then upload the photo you wish to animate. The AI technology will take around 20 seconds to work its magic on the photo. Then it’s done!
You can even use the app on a photo wit
