A kind of grass from China has been making a difference in recent years. It can be cut into pieces and used as a substrate(培养基) for growing mushrooms(蘑菇); it is a kind of good feed for farm animals; it also blocks strong desert winds. This plant is called Juncao, or “mushroom grass”.
The Juncao technology was introduced to deal with the problem of poverty(贫困) and has turned out to be quite a success. The technology has been introduced into 106 other countries. Local farmers’ incomes(收入) have increased a lot, after they grew mushrooms with Juncao.

But this method led to deforestation. More forests would be cut down to provide wood. To solve the problem, we needed to find other ways. We had many difficulties during the research process. The most difficult part was that we didn’t have past experience to learn from. We tested many kinds of grass to see which one could be used to grow mushrooms, how to process the grass, and how to grow mushrooms with the grass. Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. She has convinced(说服) parents to send their daughters back to school. The school has sent more than 1,800 students to universities and colleges.
When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield (产量) was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capita income (人均收入) reached 12,670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.
Over the last eight years, 98.99 million rural people have been lifted out of poverty. The 832 counties (县) and 128,000 villages which these people live in are no longer in poverty. China has been responsible for reducing 70 percent of poverty worldwide since the late 1970s.

For the past 20 years, the Touching China annual people award has honored people from all walks of life across the country. They are people who warm our hearts with their actions. On March 3 2022, the 2021 Touching China Award ceremony aired on CCTV. Ten inspirational role models were on the list, Yang Zhenning is one of them. When mentioning the greatest theoretical physicists in the world, Yang Zhenning is a name never to be forgotten.
Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hefei Anhui, China, and grew up in the peaceful and academical atmosphere of the campus of Tsinghua University. From a young age he had an interest in physics. At the age of 12, Yang showed his great ambition to win a Nobel Prize after being attracted by a book about the unknowns of the universe.
With this goal in mind, Yang studied hard. After getting a master’s degree in Tsinghua University in 1944, Yang got the opportunity to further his studies in the United States. There he met another Chinese student, Tsung-dao Lee (李政道), who shared the same interests, and they often discussed the physics issues together.
In 1957, the two jointly proposed the theory of parity non-conservation in weak interactions (弱相互作用中宇称不守恒), which made a great contribution to high-energy physics. Once the theory was put forward, it immediately caused a sensation (轰动) in the physics community. Months later, the two won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It let other Chinese people know that Chinese scientists could stand out in the global science community and be on the global frontier (前沿) to compete with their peers.
At the Nobel Banquet, Yang also expressed his pride, saying, “I am as proud of my Chinese heritage and background as I am devoted to modern science, a part of human civilization of Western origin.” No matter where he has been, Yang Zhenning has always had his motherland in mind.
However, the frozen Sino-US relationship prevented Chinese scientists who obtained (获得) doctoral degrees from the US like Yang from returning to China. In 1971, Yang finally got the chance to return to China for a visit. Later, to support domestic education, Yang sold a mansion in the US, donating all the money to Tsinghua University. In 2003, Yang returned to China and also taught at Tsinghua. Under his influence, many overseas Chinese also returned to China to make contributions, such as Turing Award winner Yao Qizhi, physicist Wu Xiaogang, mathematician Zhang Shouwu.

The technology has also won the Geneva State Prize at the 20th International Invention Exhibition. Besides, the technology was listed by the United Nations Development Programme as one of China’s priority projects for cooperation with other developing countries.
Lin Zhanxi is the chief scientist at the China National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAOTechnology. He is the inventor of the Juncao technology.
In an interview, Lin shared his experience of inventing the Juncao technology. “To help people overcome poverty, in the 1970s, China introduced a mushroom growing technology that used wood as substrates to help farmers in mountainous areas. After three years of hard work, we succeeded in growing mushrooms with grass instead of trees. This is the Juncao technology.”

“Made in China” is having its moment now--and it’s a fashionable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands(品牌), suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.
Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’ eye by low price. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands. ”
Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in western culture any more.
“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements(元素), ”. Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols. ”

Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it. On Feb 25, President Xi Jinping announced that China has made a “complete victory” in its fight against poverty. President Xi honored role models and places in the fight. Here are three of them.
Zhang Guimei, 64, Principal of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan
Born in Heilongjiang province in 1957, Zhang traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17. She has been helping girls pursue (追求) education for more than 40 years.
As a teacher, Zhang was heartbroken when she saw her students quit school (辍学) after finishing senior high school. It was possible for many of them to go to college. However, they couldn’t do so because their families couldn’t afford it.
So in 2008, Zhang started a free school for poor girls. Since then, Zhang has been busy asking for donations to provide money for the school. She has convinced (说服) parents to send their daughters back to school. The school has sent more than 1,800 students to universities and colleges.
Mao Xianglin, 62, Village head of Xiazhuang village, Wushan county in Chongqing
In 1997, 38-year-old Mao started to work as the Party secretary (党支书) of his village. Around the village are 1,000-meter-tall cliffs (悬崖峭壁), and there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. It took villagers three days to walk to the nearest town. Mao decided to build a road.
“We can’t stay poor forever. I’ll lead us as we try, even though it will be hard,” Mao said.
He led more than 100 villagers to build the road with their hands. They hung from ropes and used hammers and drills (钻) to create the road. Falling rocks led to the deaths of six villagers.
It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. But their work has improved people’s lives. It now takes just one hour to drive to the nearest town.
Minning town, Yongning county, Ningxia Hui autonomous region
Have you seen the hit TV series Minning Town (《山海情》) It tells the story of people who move from mountains in Ningxia to build new homes on the plains (平原) in the 1990s.They learn to grow mushrooms from experts from Fujian. Some of them go to Fujian factories to make money. In the end, they get rid of poverty.
The show is based on a true story. It is a good example of China’s “pair-up” practice. In 1997, Fujian and Ningxia paired up as partners to fight poverty. The name Minning comes from the short nicknames for Fujian (Min) and Ningxia (Ning). Since the work started, Fujian has sent 183 officials and around 2,000 experts in science and technology, education, and medical care to Ningxia, according to the local government.
The population of Minning grew from 8,000 to 66,000. In 2020, the per capita yearly disposable (可支配的) income of its people reached nearly 15,000 yuan.
