Teaching procedure
Warm-up (Activity 1): picture about space spend of governments in 2021 and 2022 Q1: what information can you get form the picture Q2: do you think the spend is worth or not 4min
Pre-reading Activity 2: Title: “I s exploring the space a waste of time and money ” (yes or no question, for & against) 1min
While-reading Activity 3: Match main ideas of every paragraph and get the structure of the whole passage. 2min
Activity 4: tell the genre of the passage: argumentation/persuasive writing (a brief introduction of the argumentation) 2min
Activity 5: Careful reading ①part 1: (para1) Introduction <1>Find the two opinions toward space exploration ForAgainst
<2>Find out how the author links the two different opinions and think of relative expressions. (Thesis statement & two different opinions) <3>The author’s attitude toward space exploration (Shallow) ②Part 2(para2 -- 4) Body : benefits of space exploration <1>Find out the arguments and evidences form the passage; <2>Find out transitional words to make the discourse more coherent; <3>Para2: why can exploring space help fight against world hunger (complete the gap ), lead to the reasoning which can make content more convincing. <4>Try to find out expressions about the cause and effect and show students more expressions about reasoning. <5>Para3: examples to make language more convincing <6>Para4: question: What did the pictures of Earth from space make people realize (ask SS to answer the question and translate the whole sentence. Then ask them to find the special thing about the sentence, then lead to the simile, and rhetorical device. Vivid language. ) ③Part 3 (para 5) Conclusion: <1>Find out the sentence that repeats the writer’s opinion in the last paragraph.
