How's your vacation I'm visiting my uncle in Spain. He lives in the sunny and beautiful city of Valencia, in Spain.
Yesterday, I had great fun. My uncle took me to the tomato festival in Bunol, which is just 30 miles away from where my uncle lives. You have probably never heard of this festival before. Neither have I. The tomato festival is called "La Tomatina" in Spanish. It is the biggest and messiest tomato fight in the world. When we first got to the square where the festival took place, it was very crowded with people from all around the world, and many trucks were carrying tomatoes. My uncle told me the crowded people here were around 38,000 and this was more than four times the population of Bunol.
The tomato fight started as soon as the first banger was beaten. Then everyone including me started throwing tomatoes at each other. I took red tomatoes and threw them at anyone that ran, moved, bent down, or turned around. Tomatoes must be squashed(捏扁) before people threw them in order not to hurt anybody.
After a little while, the streets, people and nearby buildings were splashed(溅起) with red. In spite of no winner in this fight, we all had joy. As soon as a second banger was beaten, people stopped throwing.
I really had a great time. I wish you had been here, too. I hope to hear from you soon. Take care.

Over 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention (大会) was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born.
The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.
Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years.
There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs (签名) for 23 hours.
In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world's biggest country music festival. Now, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. As you can imagine, those who want to attend Fan Fair must plan ahead. For example, they need to buy a ticket several months ahead of time. Of course, there's much more to prepare.

It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her "Mother's Day Proclamation", which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. "I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit," she said.
1.The first paragraph suggests that .
A. mothers didn't get enough appreciation
B. Mother's Day was invented by Hallmark
C. young people returned to their mothers' houses
D. Greeks and Romans were the first to celebrate Mother's Day
2.Who plays the most important role in creating Mother's Day
A. Ann Jarvis. B. Julia Ward Howe.
C. Woodrow Wilson. D. Anna Jarvis.
3.Why did Anna Jarvis object to Mother's Day at last
A. Because it was an emotional day.
B. Because the festival was not profitable.
C. Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
D. Because the day was buried under greeting cards and candy.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The Objection to Mother's Day
B. The Argument on Celebrating Mother's Day
C. The Story Behind the Creation of Mother's Day
D. Different Form of Celebrations on Mother's Day

Tom has an aunt who lives in a far-off village. He hadn't seen her for two years and he really missed her.
Tom spent a lot of time with his aunt when he was a little boy. At that time, his parents were too busy with their work, so they sent him to his aunt. It was his aunt who took care of him for a long time. He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him. But he couldn't remember her clearly. After all, it had been so many years before.
Last week, Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
"Hello, Auntie. This is Tom. How are you " asked Tom over the phone.
"I'm fine, Tom. Thanks. I'm just a bit lonely," said Tom's aunt. Hearing that, he knew he had made a right decision.
"I'm coming this weekend. I want to spend the weekend with you," he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
"Really That's great! I miss you so much." his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by bus in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus, it was getting dark.
It's a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt's house. The village had experienced a lot of changes. Tom looked around curiously. Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus. The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village. Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him, Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes, it seemed that the girl noticed him. She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk. Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.

根据第一段"but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner." 故选A。
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis ,a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday",在19世纪50年代美国的母亲工作日,并倡导推动母亲节。
Ann Jarvis, ... held 'Mothers' Work Days' to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace"举办"母亲工作日"活动,以促进家庭和工作场所的健康和卫生 。"In 1870 Howe published her 'Mother's Day Proclamation', which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace." It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. 'I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,' she said".
It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented..."

Dear Tom,
How is everything going Learning that you are interested in Chinese summer vacation, I am delighted to share some information with you.
For Chinese students, the summer vacation usually lasts for more than 1 month, during which time students' activities can be various, ranging from academic improvement to hobby cultivation. Some may be occupied with after-school classes so as to enrich themselves mentally; some may take up more sports to keep physically fit; others may join their friends so that they could get entertained together.
As for me, this summer vacation is the most unforgettable. Short though it was, I spent a fulfilling and rewarding one. The highlight was my voluntary experience in the nursing home, where I had a good chat with the elderly and listened to their life stories. By practicing the voluntary spirit, not only have I gained a better knowledge of the senior citizens but I also have done my bit for the society.
Hopefully, my information can be of help. If you have any doubt, do feel free to ask me.
Yours
