In 2017, bottled water surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the most popular beverage in the United States. While there are undeniably health benefits to more Americans choosing water over sugary sodas, the uptick(小幅上升)in bottled water sales and the marketing push for selling pre-packaged water has also contributed to an explosion of disposable container waste. Despite having some of the cleanest municipal water systems in the world, 60% of the world's bottled water consumption occurs in the United States, even though Americans only comprise 4.5% of the world's total population.
People justify drinking bottled water for many different reasons. Bottled water in restaurants has become somewhat of a status symbol, especially in fine dining. When I waited tables, I always dreaded asking guests for their water preference. In business settings where tablemates are unfamiliar with each other, no one feels comfortable answering for the group. Guests dining on an expense account—at least in a high-end restaurant—typically "splurge"(挥霍)on bottled water. A waiter wouldn't dare offend a client by ordering tap water.
This results in trash bags filled with hundreds of empty glass bottles every night. In theory, the bottles and their packaging are recyclable, but history shows that, despite our best intentions, many recyclable products end up in landfills anyway.
We can all agree, hopefully, that whenever possible, restaurants should make more responsible choices about how their businesses impact the environment. The world is changing, and restaurants can't always give people what they want anymore. Forgoing(放弃)bottled water is a very small sacrifice for those who prefer it—a drop in the bucket, as they say.
1.What problem is mentioned in paragraph 1
A. People prefer bottled water to soft drinks.
B. Most municipal water systems break down.
C. Drinking bottled water leads to more waste.
D. The population in the United States declines.
2.What might the author be
A. A critic. B. A restaurant owner.
C. A waiter. D. A social observer.
3.What do people do with the waste bottles
A. They are thrown into seas. B. They are buried in landfills.
C. They are recycled in factories. D. They are transformed into plastics.
4.What is the main idea of the passage
A. People must be more aware of the environment.
B. Bottled water has become the most popular drink.
C. It's time to take bottled water off restaurant menus.
D. Restaurants should not give people whatever they want.

Apples, oranges and other fruit should be kept in the fridge to last long, new supermarket labels (标签) will say, in a move which could tell the end of the traditional fruit bowl. The labels will form part of the government-backed guidance to help customers bring down the amount of food they throw by changing advice on packs of supermarket food.
Under the plan supermarkets will introduce a new "Little Blue Fridge" sign for food which should be kept chilled (冷藏), or benefit from being kept in the fridge to prevent it going off. The sign will appear on much food which is not usually kept in the fridge. For example, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) pointed out that apples, oranges and pear, which are usually kept in a fruit bowl, should in fact be stored in the fridge.
Dr. Andrew Parry, a Special Advisor at WRAP, said, "Most fresh fruit and vegetables will keep fresher for longer if kept in their packaging and in the fridge. Generally a good way to manage fruit at home is to take out enough into the fruit bowl-if you prefer it at room temperature, but use your fridge as cold storage for the rest. This will give you more time to enjoy your food, and help cut down on waste."
Environment Minister Therese Coffey said, "We know that confusing labels can lead to food waste by suggesting that esculent items need to be thrown away sooner. This new guidance will make packaging much clearer for customers, saving them money and cutting waste. I encourage all food businesses, large and small, to use this guidance to help them put the right date mark on food and help to guide people on the freezing products, which are key to cutting down on the amount of eatable food thrown away."
Heather Hancock, Chairman of the Food Standards Agency, said, "I think this clear guidance can help deal with food waste, without damaging the safety of food. It will help businesses supply food that is properly described and stored, and safely provided to consumers."
1.Which is in line with the goal of the government-backed guidance
A. Encouraging business. B. Lowering goods prices.
C. Cutting down on waste. D. Improving product quality.
2.What's the meaning of the underlined word "esculent" in paragraph 4
A. Eatable. B. Bad. C. Fresh. D. Packaged.
3.What's Heather Hancock's attitude towards the government-backed guidance
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant. C. Positive. D. Disappointed.
4.Which can be the best title for the text
A. The Clearer Label Plan to Reduce Food Waste.
B. The Disadvantages of Confusing Labels on the Food.
C. The New Ways to Keep Fruit and Vegetables Fresh.
D. The End of the Traditional Fruit Bowl.

Specialists(专家)say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. "Culture shock" is what these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors(因素)in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems—the telephones, post office, or transportation—may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they have back home. They find themselves without any identify. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to (使发生)a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security (安全).This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience—these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
1.When people move to a new country, they_______.
A.will get used to their new surroundings with difficulty
B.have well prepared for the new surroundings
C.will get used to the culture of the country quickly
D.will never be familiar with the culture of the country
2.According to the passage, factors that give rise to culture shock include all of the following except_______.
A.the language communication B.the weather conditions and customs
C.the public service systems D.the homesickness
3.According to the passage, the more successful you are at home,_______.
A.the fewer difficulties you may have abroad B.the more difficulties you may have abroad
C.the more money you will earn abroad D.the less homesick you may feel abroad
4.The writer tells us that the best way to overcome culture shock is to _______.
A.protect ourselves from unfamiliar environment B.develop a strange sense of self-protection
C.get familiar with new culture D.return to our own country

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the 9th of January, a day I will remember for a long time. It was a normal Sunday morning around 8: 30 a.m., right on time for Sammy's morning walk. I didn't walk because of my lameness, so I rode in my power wheelchair. We got out the door and made our way toward a property near my apartment complex. We got to the gate and out of the complex, and we went left onto the extra wide sidewalk. It was about a mile's walk one way, passing a firehouse on the right side of the road, before we turned around and started back.
Along the path we took was a large plate over the sidewalk. I passed over it the first time without any problems. My wheelchair could reach up to 8 miles per hour, but we went a little slower on our walks, around 2 miles per hour, so Sammy could keep up. Even so, this speed was pretty fast for a 15-year-old dog.
As we turned around and made our way back, I went over the sidewalk plate again except that this time it was moved without me realizing it, putting my wheelchair in the grass on the embankment(路堤). The next thing I knew, my wheelchair started to tip over, throwing me out of the chair and rolling down the embankment into the muddy water below.
My right leg was hurt, and I was unable to pull myself upright. I was too weak to gather my strength to call for help. The muddy water was cold and I felt it hard to breathe with my body folded and twisted in a strange position. Meanwhile, Sammy was sitting up on the sidewalk with his leash(牵狗皮带) caught under the tipped over wheelchair. I heard him barking louder than I'd ever heard. He knew I was hurt and was in danger.
By the way my wheelchair tipped over, a passerby on the street would not be able to see it from the road All anyone could see was a dog barking on the sidewalk almost right across the street from the firehouse.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I could tell Sammy was trying to help me. _____________________________________

②根据上文"A legend says that Kaldi, an Ethiopian, discovered his goats enjoy eating coffee plants. Curious, he tasted the leaves and began to dance around. A passing monk witnessed the scene and took some back to his fellow monks. Later that night, the monks experienced extreme inspiration.(传说埃塞俄比亚人卡迪发现他的山羊喜欢吃咖啡树。出于好奇,它尝了尝叶子,然后开始跳舞。一个路过的和尚看到了这一幕,就把一些带回去给他的和尚同伴。那天晚上晚些时候,僧侣们体验到了极端的灵感)"以及后文"Soon Arabia started roasting coffee beans. ④根据后文"Studies have shown that it helps cognitive skills in elderly women. Women who drank three cups of coffee daily scored higher on memory tests than women who drank one cup of coffee.(研究表明,它有助于提高老年妇女的认知能力。在记忆力测试中,每天喝三杯咖啡的女性比每天只喝一杯咖啡的女性得分更高)"可知,本段的主要内容是咖啡对人体的好处。故A选项"咖啡也有一些好处"符合语境。故选A。
⑤根据后文"The more you drink, the more you depend on it.(你喝得越多,你就越依赖它)"可知,后文提到咖啡喝得越多越有依赖性,可见咖啡容易让人上瘾。故B选项"咖啡像毒品一样容易上瘾"符合语境。故选B。

第二节
答案:
I could tell Sammy was trying to help me. He called forth all his energy to bark as loudly as he could in an attempt to arrest the attention of passers-by. Unfortunately, not a single person appeared in my view. Time ticking away, the freezing coldness consumed me completely from top to toe, driving me to the edge of despair. Nevertheless, at no time did Sammy cease barking desperately which touched my heart immensely and breathed hope into me. Chances were that the firemen could hear and help us out.
Three firemen came to my dog's aid finally. The instant they spotted me lying in the muddy water, they hurried to pick me up with great caution and then lifted my wheelchair. They offered to send me back home for further treatment and Sammy played the role of a guide. It was not until the moment we returned to the complex that the lump in my heart eventually dropped. Sammy's deep love and the firemen's generous and timely aid, together with the warm golden sunlight warmed me up.
