Ranked as one of the poorest states in America, Louisiana is often struck by coastal storms and hurricanes. The sky-high poverty and crime rates are destructive for residents—especially for young people. Despite the unfavorable situation, there is a spirit of survival and hope for people living in Baton Rouge. "We choose to live by joy and community more than look at horrible issues and challenges that sometimes feel too big for us to take on," said Dustin La Font, whose nonprofit, Front Yard Bikes, supports hundreds of students in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, every year as they pedal towards a brighter future.
At Front Yard Bikes, students work to build their own bicycle, learning skills like mechanics, welding and cycling safety, while receiving mentoring, academic support, and job training opportunities.
"We had to put a ton of energy and love into it,'' La Font said. "Students learned to saw, drill, measure, cut. They learned to paint, design, and plan. And they built their own program from scratch. Our mission is to create safe spaces that empower our kids to learn about their intrinsic worth as they learn, grow, and build."
Many kids now gather after school in this safe place to ride, play, and help out in the garden. "Pretty much any kid can find a place here to belong," La Font said. "For the fact that they built their park, there's ownership over it. They take care of their park."
Front Yard Bikes serves nearly 400 young people a year. To date, 50 students have been certified in mechanics, and 2,000 kids have benefited from the program.
"People say to me, 'Thank you for keeping kids busy and out of the streets'," La Font said. "I don't like that because it says kids are the problems to be solved. But they are our greatest resource for our community challenges; they are problem solvers, not trouble makers. My constant fight is trying to get people to see who our kids really are ... and to see that they have something to offer right now."

B. They are well protected in the garden.
C. They find the garden similar to their home.
D. They receive good education in the garden.
4.What role do kids play in the community according to La Font

Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (扇叶) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.
I'd worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware(五金制品) shops selling unusual things so I thought that I woud have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.
When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out.
He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.
I asked him how much it was.
He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair.
He said: "It didn't cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it "
That really touched me. I took the blade home and it work perfectly! My daughters got a "new" fan for nothing.
When I told them this story, they were shocked as they are used to patronizing (经常光顾) big modern shops where everything is transactional (交易型的) and the employees go strictly by the book. Not so much my wife. She is almost in her 60s, and said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.
1.Why did the author go to Jalan Besar
A. To visit some old friends. B. To buy a new standing fan.
C. To apply for a highly - paid job. D. To find a way to fix the broken fan.
2.What does the underlined word "predicament" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Potential risk. B. Basic principle.
C. Contact information. D. Difficult situation.
3.Which of the following can best describe the old man
A. Kind and brave. B. Honest and helpful.
C. Hard - working and curious. D. Easy - going and humorous.
4.How did the author's wife react to his experience
A. She thought little of it.
B. She was greatly surprised.
C. She remembered the good old days.
D. She thought it was too good to be true.

Australian experts have expressed concerns that too many millennials are hoping to use their social media accounts to build their careers.
Their concerns follow the sudden rise in Internet celebrities who make money by posting photos or videos online. For the lucky few who are not only talented in photographing but also good-looking and business-savvy, making money from social media isn't impossible.
Social media platforms are flooded with professionals paid to promote products and services. However, social scientist Lauren Rosewarne, from the University of Melbourne, said, "In reality, there are far fewer people making money from the platforms than one may think." She also said many young Australians were getting sucked in social media platforms by the appeal of making money quickly from the platforms, describing it as "totally unrealistic".
"Young people are hoping to be famous in numbers that were simply not there 20 years ago," Rosewarne told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). "There are some people who can make fortunes out of monetizing(使赚钱) their posts, but that is not the norm," she said. "It is up to parents and schools to discourage students from seeking fame, as many believe it is a possible career choice. There's the warning for parents; this is not a normal or even common occurrence that you can monetize your social media account."
Meanwhile Toni Eagar from the Australian National University said social problems could arise from spending too much time on social media. "Where do the Internet celebrities go to separate the life people see on social media websites from their actual normal life " Eagar said. "All of a sudden, people own your private life."
1.Why is there a rise in Internet celebrities
A.Many young people are good at taking photos.
B. People want to socialize by sharing photos online.
C. Many people see being Internet celebrities as an easy way to make money.
D. Social media offers a reliable career choice tomillennials.
2.What does the underlined phrase "getting sucked in" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Benefiting from. B. Being satisfied with.
C. Taking advantage of. D. Getting involved in.
3.What message does the author convey by quoting Lauren Rosewarne
A. Young people today are more business-savvy than ever.
B. Young people become less interested in Internet fame.
C. It's not a wise choice to promote new products on social media platforms.
D. It's a bad idea for young people to try earning money from social media platforms.
4.Toni Eagar thinks the overuse of social media could cause _____.
A. a loss of personal privacy B. an inability to appreciate life
C. an overreliance on the Internet D. an addiction to the virtual life online

In my free time, I like hiking challenges. It's how I feed myself, physically, mentally, spiritually.
I looked over at my husband, Mike, and friends Emily and Jean, who'd joined me on this climb to the top of Nippletop Mountains. They were all fit, experienced hikers, though not as enthusiastic about it as me, Mike especially. He's more of a tech guy.
We'd set off in the morning, dressed in layers against coldness. It took us just less than five hours to cover the five miles to the peak of Nippletop, with more snow and ice on the rocky trail the closer we got to the top. It was almost 1:30 pm now. We started to head down soon before it got dark.
A friendly young hiker waved to us. "Hey, want me to take your picture "
"Absolutely!"
Mike gave the hiker his phone. That hiker snapped a few pictures for us.
We continued. I said "want to take a different trail so as to save time. It's steeper(陡峭) but shorter."
I led the way. They followed me with some distance apart. Carefully I sidestepped down the slope. Quarter mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for the others. I couldn't see them. Then a scream broke the quietness. Mike! He sprawled(瘫坐) on a steep, narrow, wooded part of the trail, about 100 feet ahead of me. Ice everywhere. His hands were holding his right leg tightly.
I shouted, "What happened "
"I slipped on the ice," he said. "Then I heard this crack. It hurts badly!"
Moments later, we got to Mike. "What should we do " I asked. Jean checked Mike's ankle. "We need to splint(夹板)it," she said.
We fixed a hiking pole to Mike's leg. What now There was no way the three of us women could carry him down this mountain.
I pulled out my cell phone and called 911. Nothing. No signal. It was the same with the other three phones.
"Can I help " It was the guy who'd taken our picture at the mountain top.

第二节
答案:which ;marks ;has been celebrated ;astronauts ;merely ;with ;It ;what ;lengths ;if/though
故填which。
故填has been celebrated。
be familiar with为固定搭配,意为"对……熟悉",with为介词,符合句意。故填with。
句中的"that we celebrate Moon Day with children." 故填It。
故填what。

In the winter holiday, I attended a lecture on astronomy by Professor Wang in the Science and Technology Museum in our city.
In the lecture, I learned something about the solar system, an amazing world that I knew little about before. Professor Wang showed us a lot of pictures and videos, which made us have a sound knowledge of other planets. When the lecture was over, we got a chance to ask him some questions.
This valuable experience made me believe that there are still many secrets about the universe waiting to be explored. And I am determined to study harder and make a contribution to astronomy in the future.
第二节
答案:
My words came out in a rush. "Take mine," he said. "I've got service here." After several attempts, the call finally went through. "We're hiking Nippletop, and my husband broke his leg. We need help." I told the rescue operator. The operator said, "We're trying to get your location from your phone. Please keep connected. We will arrange for the rescue." The phone owner decided to stay for help. I wrapped a blanket around Mike. The rest of us kept moving to stay warm and waited.
An hour went by, then another, and there was nothing we could do except wait for rescue in the coldness. At last, we heard a helicopter approaching. The crew on board dropped a rope. We managed to fasten it around Mike. He rose slowly into the air. Soon Mike would be at the hospital, getting the care he needed. I waved and watched until the helicopter was barely a tiny dot in the sky. Relief and gratitude washed over me. I must say great thanks to our friends Emily and Jean, the hiker who'd lent me his phone, the helicopter crew and the operator who had been in constant communication with everyone.
