I just arrived in this country for a one-year schooling. One day, I took the underground to visit some ancient palaces. But what happened to me next has taught me much about culture 31 .
Since all the 32 were taken, I stood. But in one quick motion(动作), I felt my bag removed(移动)from my back, and suddenly it was 33 . I turned around to see who the thief was.
I looked around the car only to find directly across from me was an elderly lady, and sitting on her lap was my bag. I tried to get it back from her lap. But as I began to 34 it up, she quickly grabbed(抓住)it back and held onto it. I looked around at the people standing beside me, and those sitting beside her but no one took any 35 of the situation. I used my hands as possible as I could, but it didn't work. She picked up my bag, showing how 36 it was. I finally began to understand. She was holding my bag to 37 me.
At the next stop, a middle-aged woman got on the busy underground. Another elderly woman sitting down took her bag, setting it on her lap. They didn't talk; 38 this older woman was more than happy to sit with this stranger's bag on her lap through her journey.
As I was getting ready to get off, the woman gently handed me back my bag. But 39 I had a chance to thank her, she had disappeared(消失)into the crowd.
Sadly, this custom was more surprising to me than if I was robbed(抢劫).Everyone back home had heard of being robbed―that was 40 city behavior―but having a stranger hold onto someone's bag out of kindness, in a city of twelve million people―that was truly special.

You're sitting at the dinner table with your dog. You know you shouldn't give dogs human food, but when you look down, those cute puppy(小狗) eyes are almost impossible to refuse.
Why does this kind of thing happen A Japanese scientist, Miho Nagasawa, seems to have found the answer: it has something to do with what is called "the cuddle chemical" (拥抱化合物).
In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team carried out an experiment(实验). They tested the levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact(互动) with each other.
While in the room, the humans patted(爱抚) the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs' eyes.
Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again.
The researchers found that the levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they had interacted. However, the levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that had simply looked into each other's eyes, without much patting or talking.
The results of this study can also tell us a lot about the history of the bond(关系) between humans and dogs.
It all started tens of thousands of years ago. Wolves used to follow humans when they were hunting. Humans realized that they could use the wolves to help with the hunt, and finally, both species(物种) began to work together toward survival. Over time, the wolves and humans started to depend on each other. And they started to bond with each other. These changes are what caused some of the wolves to turn into what we
now know as dogs.
This process depended a great deal on the bond that humans formed with them. And according to Nagasawa's study, the bond was formed with the help of the cuddle chemical.
According to the text, the purpose of the experiment was to .
A. tell people to love their pets B. study the relationship between dogs and wolves
C. explain how the cuddle chemical works D. understand the feelings of animals
Which kind of behavior leads to most cuddle chemical
A. Feeding dogs. B. Patting dogs.
C. Looking into dogs’ eyes. D. Speaking to dogs.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chat-bot tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework.
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChalGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the area's networks and devices(设备).
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat(舞弊)on their homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information.
"It does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic (学术的)and lifelong success," said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to prevent the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all educators say "no" to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are writing policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, the head master at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are unwise. "We have to know that AI is a tool people will use," he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. "What we need to do is change our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can have honesty while enjoying the use of the tool".
What is ChatGPT according to this passage
An AI chat-bot that can help us think and solve many problems.
A technology that can answer all kinds of questions correctly.
An AI tool that can help us get high marks on our homework.
A human-like robot which can help us to take speaking exams.
What's the attitude(态度)of some Canadian universities to ChatGPT
A. Thankful. B. Worried. C. Unfriendly. D. Careful.
Which of the following situations is suitable for the use of ChatGPT
Amy will take a speaking exam on history next month.
Lihua has some difficulty in reading an English novel.
Sandy is planning the development of her company.
Lily needs new ways to improve her scientific research.
What is this passage mainly about
Some facts that prove ChatGPT is a powerful tool people will use.
Different attitudes and actions to ChatGPT in the educational world.
Bans on the use of ChatGPT in some schools of the western countries.
Actions some western countries are taking to ban the use of ChatGPT.

Here's one scene. Say you are in heavy traffic and your car's brakes(刹车)start to fail. If you keep going, you will go into the back of a truck and probably die. But if you turn sharply to avoid the truck, you risk hitting an elderly woman or a group of children. What do you do
This is an extreme choice. But every day, drivers around the world have to make quick decisions to avoid accidents. Often, they react without even having time to think. But what would a driverless car do
Self-driving cars are designed to deal with all sorts of situations, from understanding traffic rules to planning the easiest route that avoids traffic jams. These programming decisions are direct and clear. Ethics
(道德), on the other hand, is not. How do you program(编写程序) a car to decide what to do in the case of an accident How do you choose which life is more valuable And who gets to choose This is a problem that ethicists, lawyers, and car makers are all wondering about.
The ethicist opinion
Patrick Lin teaches robotics and ethics at California Polytechnic State University. He says that it might seem easy to say that self-driving cars must follow certain rules to minimize or reduce harm, but he says, "even that leads to morally(道德地) murky(模糊的)decisions " He gives an example: on one side of you is a motorcyclist wearing a helmet; on the other is a motorcyclist not wearing a helmet. If the car’s computer tells it to minimize harm during a necessary turn, that might mean hitting the person with the helmet. After all, they are better protected and so less likely to be hurt. But, Lin asks, aren't you being unfair to the responsible (负责的)motorist
According to Lin, any type of decision-making based on age, gender, or any similar factor Would be discrimination(歧视)and therefore against standards of ethics. He explained that even the safest car runs the risk of having accidents, and that the responsibility for programming will lie with the car makers.
The legal(法律的)opinion
But some experts say we don't need to worry about this problem. Bryan Casey teaches at Stanford Law School Casey says that what a self-driving car does in a crash is not an ethical issue (问题)at all. It is a legal issue. If a driver has a crash now, the law decides if he was driving dangerously or if it was truly an accident. If the driver was dangerously careless, he faces punishment often a fine or jail. If a breakdown caused the crash, the car makers might be at fault. Either way, laws exist to decide what is wrong, and who is responsible. Casey says that will not change with the arrival of self-driving cars.
We expect self-driving cars to be very safe, safer than human drivers because computers can react more quickly. And indeed, an autonomous vehicle should be well designed and slow down or speed up in relation to the actual case. However, accidents can always happen. This means that drivers, car makers, and lawmakers will need to deal with new problems as they appear.
What is the most difficult problem facing self- driving cars now
How to avoid causing accidents on the road.
When to slow down or speed up in actual case.
How to decide what to do in the case of an accident
How to plan routes according to different situations.
The example of the motorcyclist(Para. 4) is to show .
all cars run the risk of having accidents
self-driving cars are unable to follow certain traffic rules
motorcyclists shouldn't wear helmets so that self-driving cars won't hit them
the decisions made by self-driving cars might go against standards of ethics
The underlined word "that" (Para.6) refers to that .
who should be responsible for a crash is decided by laws
what a self-driving car does in a crash is an ethical issue
self-driving cars should also face punishment in a crash
the responsibility for programming lies with the car makers
The author would most probably agree that .
human drivers are much safer than self-driving cars
driving laws should change with the arrival of self-driving cars
there will always be accidents where someone gets hurt on the road
self-driving cars have the ability of thinking and making decisions for themselves

The game of Go is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive(竞争的) event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment(娱乐).
Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world have shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go is still used as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
The game of Go has many meanings for real life. It represents a square world of round pieces in black and white. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. In the game of Go, the players do not wipe out( 消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who makes the other side into a dead corner wins the game.

I'm so proud of myself
I'm proud of myself because I'm hard-working, courageous and confident. I always make myself better
and I always tell myself I'm the best. I'm very important to my parents, my grandparents, my teachers, my
classmates and my friends. Although I have no money, I can make them happy.
I'm sure they all love me and need me. I can do many things for them. In fact, everyone is very important.
So we should be proud of ourselves.
