By adding dance moves into single bamboo drifting(独竹漂), an art similar to kung fu, a 24-year-old woman from Zunyi,Guizhou has brought a new life to the traditional art form.
Single bamboo drifting started in the Chishui River Basin in Guizhou, which local people used to cross the river more than 1,000 years ago.Nowadays,it has become a sport and a kind of performing art. Performers need to stand upright on a nine-meter-long bamboo pole(竹竿) while drifting on the river. It is very hard to learn this skill because of the difficulty of standing on the bamboo pole.
Yang Liu learned the skill from her grandmother at the age of 7. To acquire the skill better,she worked hard to practice difficult movements on the bamboo pole even if she suffered from lots of pain during the training. Later, Yang tried to add her own dancing skills to the art form. She was finally able to perform dance moves while drifting on a bamboo pole on the river at the age of 15.
To catch more people’s eyes on single bamboo drifting, she dances on a bamboo pole while wearing traditional Chinese clothing. Yang has also shared videos of herself performing single bamboo drifting online in recent years.She has got about 1 million followers on short-video platforms,and her excellent and unusual performances have won high praise from viewers both at home and abroad.
