The summer job is common for many kids, who are encouraged by their parents to get out of their home, go and learn valuable lessons about responsibility, the value of money and hard work. Whether you were saving for a bike, your first car, a dress or whatever, you all went in with high expectations of independence and felt like proper adults. However, those expectations are not always met!
Jimmy Fallon did us all a service by asking people to share their worst summer job experiences in one of his challenges. There are some absolute classics there! Check out a list of your favorites below!
From @Lobster:
I was 10 and went to my grandfather’s farm. He gave me $10 and I kept an eye on the farm. I stood there in the sun until my mom came an hour later.
From @Anthony:
I was hired at an elderly people’s home for patients with dementia (痴呆). On my first day, I accidentally pressed the door button, and the old people escaped. We had to run through the town rounding them.
From@Rodger:
I was babysitting two kids. One ran out of the front door, and the other went out the back. When I ran around the house to find them, they ran back inside and locked me out.
From Donny:
I earned $30 working construction for an agency one day in college. When I finished, there was a $35 parking ticket on my car. I refer to it as the day I paid to work.

Melanie was born with spina bifida, a condition that rid her of the ability to walk. All her life, she had been using a wheelchair to get around. Trevor, on the other hand, has been blind since he was born.
The two ran into each other at an adaptive rock climbing class. They soon learned that they shared a common love for nature. Knowing all of this, the pair came up with a brilliant idea—with their strengths combined, they would climb the mountains of Colorado together!
Before the start of each journey, Melanie, secure in carrier, is hoisted by a friend or a fellow hiker onto Trevor’s back. Her role is to give verbal directions to her partner as they pass through the trail. “I describe everything I see and exactly how Trevor needs to move,” Melanie said of their hiking method. “It just seemed like common sense,” she told Good Morning America. “He’s the legs, I’m the eyes—boom! Together, we’re the dream team.”
To them, the best part about hiking as a pair is that they get to give each other the chance to accomplish something that others might believe is impossible.
“It made me so happy to help someone experience what I’ve been able to experience my whole life. Just getting on top of a mountain, you just feel that sense of accomplishment. The best part is being able to make her smile. That gives me purpose,” Trevor said.
As for Melanie, she says that the activity also gives her the feeling of freedom. “I’ve been in a wheelchair my whole life, and it’s an amazing feeling to leave it miles behind on the trail. I even couldn’t get in it if I wanted to, and that’s a great feeling,” she said.
24.What do we know about Melanie and Trevor
A. They are born disabled.
B. They are good at sports.
C. They show no interest in outdoor activities.
D. They’ve known each other since they were born.
25.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “hoisted” in paragraph 3
A. Caught. B. Raised. C. Removed. D. Pushed.
26.What does Trevor think of hiking with Melanie
A. He thinks it meaningful. B. He gets the feeling of freedom.
C. He thinks the experience annoying. D. He feels it his duty to help Melanie.
27.What’s the topic of the text
A. Two people worked together as a team.
B. Hiking as a pair proved to be successful.
C. Two disabled teamed up for hiking adventures.
D. A blind man helped a woman who couldn’t walk.

Do you know the Eiffel Tower when you see a picture of it Of course you do! So do a lot of other people. In fact, I believe more people recognize the Eiffel Tower than any other famous structure in the whole world. That long, long capital A is easy to remember.
The Eiffel Tower is the famous symbol of the city of Paris. It also stands for France just as the Statue of Liberty stands for the United States.
The Eiffel Tower was not very well liked at first, even though the design had been chosen out of seven hundred designs. A contest had been held to find a design for a tower to be built in Paris by 1889. That year would be one hundred years after the war known as the French Revolution. The French Revolution marked the time when the French people broke away from the rule of kings. It was a very important thing to all Frenchmen, and they wanted a special tower to be built to mark the 100 years.
When his design was chosen, Eiffel was fifty-four, rich, and well known for his fine work. He had already designed dams, churches, railroad stations, bridges, harbors and, of course, the framework of the Statue of Liberty. But it was the Eiffel Tower that made him really famous. At first, the French hated the tower. When it was begun in 1887, people called it ugly and useless. They also said that it couldn’t be built safely, and that it would fall down. As the tower gets close to her nineties, she is still in great shape. And the French people have changed their minds. Now they are very proud of their Eiffel Tower. They even think she is beautiful!
28.The writer believes that the Eiffel Tower is ________ than any other famous structure in the world.
A. taller B. older C. better designed D. better known
29.The French Revolution was important to the French because ________.
A. it gave France a new queen
B. it got rid of a bad king
C. it ended the rule of kings
D. they built the Eiffel Tower 100 years later
30.The Eiffel Tower is easy to remember because of its ________.
A. shape B. color C. size D. history
31.What does this passage mainly tell us
A. Eiffel designed many different kinds of things.
B. The reasons why many people know the Eiffel Tower.
C. Some opinions that the Eiffel Tower should not be built then.
D. Some interesting facts about the Eiffel Tower.

Cultural heritage is a variety of local treasures from different places. These treasures often increase people’s pride in their hometown. Thus, protecting cultural heritage is of great significance and importance. In protecting cultural heritage, countries around the world should join hands further to deal with issues. Today there are shared measures to preserve cultural heritage. However, countries still have different views on cultural heritage preservation.
Asian and European architecture is very different, for example. European buildings are often stone structures that can stand damage caused by wind and rain, while those in the East are more often wooden structures which require renovation(翻新). This leads to different views on how to preserve ancient architecture.
From the very beginning Europeans have the opinion that people should take fewer measures in the process of protecting cultural heritage. For example, the ruins of the Roman Colosseum have simply been left as they are, but Asia has a tradition of renovation of cultural relics and we believe that this measure will not affect their authenticity(真实性). The Ise Grand Shrine building in Japan is rebuilt every 20 years from one generation to the next. Such tradition caused a debate in international cultural heritage preservation circles, as some thought that the rebuilding process would harm its authenticity. Experts around the world travelled to Japan especially to conduct on-site check and discussions, and they finally recognized that the term “authenticity” actually varies from culture to culture.
The importance of these international exchanges is that they will help the world understand Asia, and accept Asian ways to protect cultural heritage.
32.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. Protecting cultural heritage is of little significance.
B. Countries have the same views on cultural heritage preservation.
C. Cultural heritage often makes people proud of their hometown.
D. Countries work alone without sharing in protecting cultural heritage.
33.What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Structures.
B. Buildings.
C. Damages.
D. Views.
34.What can we infer from the text
A. European experts fail to protect cultural relics.
B. Protecting cultural heritage causes many issues.
C. Many European ancient buildings are made of wood.
D. Ways to protect cultural heritage are different from area to area.
35.What does the author agree to in protecting cultural heritage
A. International communication is needed.
B. We should follow western experts’ advice.
C. Cultural heritage will be damaged through rebuilding.
D. Asian ways to protect cultural heritage are unacceptable.
