I was a lucky sur ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )vivor (幸 存 者) from the Titanic. Although many years have passed, I still remember clearly everything happened at that night.
When the Tit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )anic struck the iceberg, I was in bed. For some reason, I was awake and felt the boat shaking. A waiter on the boat knocked on the door and asked us to get dressed, put on life preservers (救生用具) and go to the boat deck (甲板). The elevators were not working, so we walked up to the boat deck. All was calm and orderly. An officer was in charge. “Women and children first,” he said, as he ordered lifeboat Number 11 to be filled. Many people began to say goodbye to their friends or families tearfully. I and Uncle Jim said goodbye.
The lowering ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of the lifeboat 70 feet to the sea was perilous. Finally, with many people’s effort, the lifeboats full of children and women pulled some distance away from the lights (下 沉 的) Titanic successfully. Row by row, the lights of the Titanic sank into the sea. When the Titanic almost totally sank into the sea, thousands of people were thrown into the sea. I shall never forget the screams of the people as they died gradually in the water.
As a British ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) kid, you were not allowed to cry. You were a “little man”. So I lay down in the bottom of the lifeboat and went to sleep. Spending as little ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) as D|S 5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia found.
Their experiments on ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others — even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.
“We wanted t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn,”said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity.
“No matter how muc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )h income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,” Dunn said in a statement.
Dunn’s team ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit — sharing bonus of between D|S 3,000 and D|S 8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro social spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.
They gave th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eir volunteers D|S 5 or D|S 20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.

The concept o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f homeschooling is not a new one. Homeschooling means educating children at home instead of sending them to public or private schools. Nowadays, homeschooling has become popular in many countries for a variety of reasons. One of them is poor quality of education in public schools and it’s also because private schools are quite expensive. Some parents believe that because they know their child’s strengths and weaknesses, they can teach him or her better. Some parents prefer homeschooling so as to prevent their children from getting into bad company. There is another group of people who choose to educate their children at home because they want them to learn spirit and values of the family and also their religious beliefs. They also think that homeschooling would help in development of strong family bonds (家庭纽带).
However, there ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) are some negative effects of homeschooling on students as well as parents.
Homeschooling ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is a full time job and not fit for parents who have their own careers. It takes a lot of time for parents’ side to make homeschooling a success. Other family members’ responsibilities may also be affected. They may give their full attention to the needs of their children. Besides, a parent may have high educational qualifications, but that does not make him or her a good teacher. Teaching is an art, which requires the ability to understand the needs of the children. It is likely that the parent might have forgotten what he or she has learned, and the curriculum (课程) of the children would also be different. This would make it difficult for the parents to explain the concepts to their children. Parents also have the responsibility of designing the curriculum of students.
In today’s w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )orld, competition (比赛) is seen in every field, and school prepares children to face these competitions. However, homeschooling does not give the children a chance to compare with other kids. They will also not be aware of where they stand in educational position among their classmates. This may affect their future lives. Education is not the only thing that the children need to become successful human beings. It is necessary that they learn to communicate in the society, and public school provides them with such an environment, where they meet many people. Schools also provide children with a chance to take part in various activities to improve their overall development.
It is true that i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t has many benefits, but one must realize that school teaches children skills to face and survive.

I was a luck ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y survivor (幸 存 者) from the Titanic. Although many years have passed, I still remember clearly everything happened at that night.
When the Titanic stru ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ck the iceberg, I was in bed.
The lowering of the l ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ifeboat 70 feet to the sea was perilous. Finally, with many people’s effort, the lifeboats full of children and women pulled some distance away from the lights (下 沉 的) Titanic successfully. I shall never forget the screams of the people as they died gradually in the water.

“If you want to see ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a thing well, reach out and touch it!” That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the ball is. The bottoms of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of le ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )arning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )just for looking. But today some museums have some things which you can touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you’ll really see!

Spending as little as ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) D|S 5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia found.
Their experiments ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others — even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.
“No matter how m ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uch income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,” Dunn said in a statement.
Dunn’s team al ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )so surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit — sharing bonus of between D|S 3,000 and D|S 8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro social spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.
They gave their volu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nteers D|S 5 or D|S 20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.
“These findings ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )suggest that very minor changes in spending allocations — as little as D|S 5 — may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day,” Dunn said.

The concept ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of homeschooling is not a new one.
However, there ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e some negative effects of homeschooling on students as well as parents.
Homeschooling is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a full time job and not fit for parents who have their own careers.
In today’s world ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), competition (比赛) is seen in every field, and school prepares children to face these competitions.
It is true th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )at it has many benefits, but one must realize that school teaches children skills to face and survive.

What do these things have in common You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.
As a kid, you didn ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too — kids need this kind of protection on their own.
But finally, kids g ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )row up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity — one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes his own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整).
In many familie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger arguments, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.
The good news about ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) fighting is that your parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teens have a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.
Sometimes this can fe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )el impossible — like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents.
Keep in mind, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.

Some people make ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they’ll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good tal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )kers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.”From there you can move on to other matters — sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once goo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
