Have you ever turned to Google to try to understand symptoms (症状) you were feeling If so, you’re not alone.
Research has found that an increasing number of people are using “Dr.Google” for information on medical problems or more.
B (★★★★)
According to Eurostat, more than half of people from the European Union (EU) said they turned to the Internet for health advice in 2021.
In all of Europe, Finland had the highest percentage, with 80% of people saying they had looked for medical advice online. The number increased by 22% since 2011.
The Netherlands was not far behind Finland at 77%, while Cyprus reported the biggest increase in the EU, rising from 28% to 74% between 2011 and 2021.
Although the Internet may be useful for getting quick information about symptoms, some believe it can do more harm than good.
A 2020 study by Edith Cowan University looked at the accuracy (准确度) of symptom-checking apps and websites, where users are asked to list their symptoms and are then given a list of possible diagnoses (诊断).
The results showed that online checks were only correct 36% of the time.Advice about when and where to go for medical care was also only correct 49% of the time.
Lead author Michella Hill warned that these websites don’t know your medical history and other symptoms—and the sites are often not regulated.
However, she added that though “Dr.Google” should not replace a visit to your real doctor, the Internet can be helpful for finding more information after you get a diagnosis.

A week ago, Jin Yi, who works at a counselling (咨询服务) center in Shanghai, received a call at midnight.
The caller, who Jin said sounded out of breath, said he was afraid of not being able to do his job if he was infected (感染) or a close contact.
“Social workers in neighborhoods are usually too busy helping other people to care for their own mental health.Suddenly feeling strong emotions is normal during their off-work hours when there’s no one around,” Jin said.
“It is important to make clear of their mental state and know their history of illness first. Then, listening to them and being with them are important.”
According to Lian Tong, a counselor from Shanghai’s official psychological (心理的) counselling hotline, over 70 percent of calls since the start of the latest outbreak in Shanghai on March 1 have had to do with the pandemic.
“People face psychological pressure because of the virus and uncertainty about the future as they are not in a position to meet all their needs,” said Lian, who has worked at the hotline for six years.
Jin said that ongoing psychological stress may make a bad influence.Jin suggested that those staying at home because of lockdowns can play games with family members to have closer connections, write diary to record their thoughts and keep in touch with friends through video or phone calls.
“Voluntary community work or reading books can also help get through anxiety and become positive,” she added.
