Brian：That’s for sure. People use trees and other plants in
many ways. The trees and plants take energy from the
sun and turn it into food. Medicine and clothing are
also made from trees and plants.
Jenny：The forest is important to animals, too. Many animals
live in the forest and eat the fruit from the trees. They
eat other plants, too.
Brian: And plants cover the soil. That way, the wind and
water don’t carry the soil away. Plants also make
everything look beautiful.

help 帮助，常用于两个句型：help sb. (to) do sth.
=help sb. with sth. “帮助某人做某事” 。介词with后接名词，通常不接动词-ing形式。

2. It’s pleasant to walk in the forest.
在森林里散步令人愉快。
在这句话中，it作形式主语。It is + adj. + (for sb. ) to do sth. 意为 “做某事(对于某人来说)是……”。
e.g. It is important to listen to teachers carefully.
认真听老师讲是重要的。
pleasant adj. 令人愉快的 既可作表语也可作定语，多用于修饰事物，表示 “某事(或某物)令人愉快”。 This is a pleasant journey.
这是个令人愉快的旅行。
pleased adj. 愉快的；高兴的；满意的 一般不作定语，多形容人，表示“某人对某事 (或某人) 感到高兴或满意”。 If you jump the queue, others will not be pleased.
如果你插队，别人会不高兴的。

away. 那样的话，风和水不会把土壤带走。
carry away意思是“带走；移走”，为固定用法。其后可接宾语，但是当代词作其宾语时，代词只能放在carry与 away之间；而当宾语是名词时，既可在中间，也可在其后。

Can you carry away the book = Can you carry the book away 你能把这本书带走吗

◆in a word意思是“总之;一句话”，用于引出十分简单的答案或解释。
—Do you like the food 你喜欢这些食物吗
—In a word, no. 一句话，不喜欢。
【拓展】in other words 表示“换句话说”。
They asked her to leave—in other words she was fired.他们请她走人，也就是说，她被解雇了。
◆without 是介词，意思是“无；没有”，其反义词为with，其后可接名词、代词或动名词。
She went to work without breakfast.
她没吃早饭就去上班了。
【拓展】
(1) without 短语可转换为条件状语从句或并列句。
Without your help I can’t pass the exam.
=If you don‘t help me, I can’t pass the exam.
没有你的帮助，我不会通过考试的。
(2) without短语作定语时，可转换为定语从句。
The baby without care is very poor.
=The baby who has no care is very poor.
