Kids can improve their brainpower by
cooking, gardening and cleaning around
the house, according to a new research.
A study of 207 British children found daily household tasks—like making meals and caring for plants—are connected with better planning, self-regulation (自我调节) and remembering instructions.
Lead researcher Deanna Tepper said the study’s results suggested household chores could have advantages for children’s executive (执行的) ability.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13 in mid-2020, the results show 86 percent of kids clean up their dirty clothes after playing, but only 59 percent make their own bed and only 26 percent sort (分类) dirty clothes.
Older children are more possible to do chores than younger ones and girls do more chores than boys. For example, only 49 percent of boys but 70 percent of girls make their own bed.
Putting the dishes into the dishwasher is a job for 55 percent of children, including 50 percent of boys and 61 percent of girls.Only 34 percent of five to seven-year-olds do this task, rising to 64 percent of those aged 11 to 13.
“Parents may be able to use age-and-ability-proper chores to push the development of executive abilities,” Ms.Tepper said.
“Children who often cook a family meal or take care of the garden may be more possible to do well in other things—like schoolwork or problem-solving.” Ms.Tepper said cooking for others was connected to better working memory and the ability to think before acting.
