Being “hangry” is a real feeling, a new study shows.
Researchers in Europe have discovered that feeling hungry really does lead to more anger and irritability (易怒).
Hangry, or the mix of the words hungry and angry, has become a popular word in everyday language in recent years. However, researchers note that this is the first research to study how hunger influences a person’s day-to-day feelings.
B (★★★★)
Researchers found 64 people in central Europe, who recorded their levels of hunger and their feelings over a three-week period. They reported their feelings and their levels of hunger on a smartphone app five times a day.
Results show that when people feel hungry, they experience stronger feelings of anger and irritability and less pleasure. The team says the connection was still strong even after considering age, height, weight, eating habits, and personalities (个性).
Overall, researchers say hunger leads to about a third of changes in a person’s feelings throughout the day.Hunger is connected with 37 percent of changes in irritability, 34 percent of changes in anger, and 38 percent of the drop in pleasure.
“Ours is the first research to study being ‘hangry’ outside of a lab,” says lead writer Viren Swami.“Although our study doesn’t show ways to reduce bad feelings caused by hunger, it suggests that knowing what causes our bad feelings can help us to control them.So greater awareness (意识) of being ‘hangry’ could bring down the chance that hunger results in bad feelings.”
