For many people, having a cup of coffee right out of bed is the best way to start a day. But a report from Asap Science says otherwise.
It says the worst time for coffee is soon after we get up. When we wake up, our bodies start to make cortisol(皮质醇). Cortisol helps us to think clearly and be quick to understand and act. The cortisol levels(数值;浓度)rise after we wake up and climb to the highest in about an hour. So there are two problems when we drink coffee during this time: our bodies will make less cortisol, and the cortisol will make coffee less useful. And that’s why some of us drink more and more coffee.
Then, when’s the best time to have coffee When the cortisol levels are going down, the report says. Cortisol levels are usually highest between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., between noon and 1 p.m., and between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. So if you want to have coffee, enjoy it after these times, and this popular drink will help you the most.

①Every winter, Siberian cranes (白鹤) migrate (迁徙) from northeast Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ habitats (栖息地).
②“In some years, the Poyang Lake experiences floods , while in others, it experiences droughts ( 干 旱 ).
Both of these create food shortages (短缺) in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
③To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares (公顷) of lotus roots (莲藕) in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The birds’ number has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
④Over the years, China has worked hard to protect migratory birds and wetlands. Known as the “Earth’s kidneys (肾脏)”, wetlands play a key role(角色) in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity (生物多样性). The Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and bans (禁止) activities such as overgrazing (过度放牧) and giving out wastewater.
⑤Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands. In February, black-faced spoonbills (黑脸琵鹭), an endangered species, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for five years. Last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans (小天鹅) up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.
The bird number is rising in Nanchang because .

C. awful weather hasn’t hit the city D. the city becomes warmer and warmer
What is the main role (角色,作用) wetlands play
A. Providing habitats for migratory birds. B. Looking after water and biodiversity.
C. Saving endangered animal species. D. Avoiding overgrazing and water pollution.
Paragraph 4 is mainly written to show .
what China has done to protect migratory birds and wetlands
why the bird number in Nanchang rises quickly
when the Wetlands Protection Law was introduced
how China deals with water pollution and overgrazing
What do the examples in Paragraph 5 show
A. Migratory birds add biodiversity to China. B. New bird species come to China for winter.
C. China has completed its wetlands protection. D. China’s environmental protection is successful.
What is the structure of the story
D
①The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters(汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also
make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed.
②Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
③However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for
a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
④Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
⑤Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced(发音). Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
⑥In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
The writer introduced the Chinese characters by .
A. giving examples B. providing causes C. expressing opinions D. comparing(比较) facts
The following sentence would best be placed at the beginning of .
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.
A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 2
Which Chinese character used the underlined (下划线的) way
A. B. C. D.
What can we learn from the passage
Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together. 70.What might be the best title for the passage
A. The difference between Chinese and Western language B. How to form Chinese characters
C. The development of Chinese characters D. The history of the Chinese language

Man starting libraries for kids in Eastern Africa
In 2018, Roy Austin travelled to Eastern Africa to visit five countries and see the beautiful wildlife in this area. By the time he made it back home to the US, his life had completely changed.
Roy's trip included cultural experiences in each of the countries, which he said “didn’t interest” him at the time. Still he went along and ended up meeting locals in Kenya, who taught him about their educational system. That's when Roy realized he wanted to do something to give back.
While he was in the countryside of Kenya, he met some students from Amboseli Primary and Secondary School. They explained that the government doesn’t build schools for them. It simply provides them with necessary books and teachers. To have an actual(真正的)building, each community has to build it themselves or raise enough money to afford the project.
Later, someone else on the trip with Roy asked a teacher if Amboseli had a library. She told them that they didn’t, but they would love to have one. That's when Roy realized he could make their education resources better by mailing them books.
When Roy got home, he set up an organization called Libraries for Kids. Its task is to buy and send books to these students who are “hungry for knowledge”. They do so by collecting money and book donations, all of which go towards building school libraries in the countryside of Kenya and Tanzania. Of course, to the kids at Amboseli! In fact, since they first started, they have sent over 1,000 books to 11 different schools. Small action can make a big difference.

I want to say thanks to my English teacher

I used to be a shy girl and afraid to speak in class, Every time when I was asked to answer questions, I felt nervous and couldn't express myself clearly. Some times, my classmates laughed at me. But my English teacher Miss Li always encouraged me and gave me chances to practise speaking English. Little by little, I become more and more confident. So I want to express my thanks to her.
I will never forget what Miss Li did for me. I'll learn English well and try my best to be a kind teacher like her in the future.
