Children around the world are familiar with stories like The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea and The Emperor’s New Clothes.The colorful characters from the stories made us laugh and  1  throughout our childhood.
The stories  2  by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. He was born in a poor family in Odense, Denmark on April 2, 1805. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was a washerwoman. He received very  3  education.
In 1816, his father died and Andersen was forced  4  out to work. At the age of 14, Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a job as a singer and actor. He worked there for several years  5  he had to leave the theater when his voice began to change.
Afterwards, Andersen went to a school and began to publish stories. They came  6  in a large number.
Andersen lived  7  hard life, so he tried to make people laugh in his stories. He wrote because he didn’t want children to have a  8  childhood as he did. The works made Andersen well-known all over the world, but he was still a lonely man. He never married and his friends were the people who paid for  9  works. Andersen passed away on August 4, 1875.
