Secondly, it’s simple and cheap to go hiking. All you need to do is to wear a pair of trainers and a smile on your face.

A Frenchman went into a bar in the UK and asked for two glasses of beer. He drank one, waited for a while and then drank the second one. This went on for a few days. Finally the waiter said: “Sir, I can pour both two glasses into one glass for you.” “No, this is better,” said the Frenchman. “You see I have a brother. He is in France. I do this, so it seems that we both drink together.”
But one day the man walked into the bar and only asked for one glass. The waiter was worried. Maybe something happened to the man’s brother. “Is everything OK ” he asked. “What do you mean ” asked the man. “You used to ask for two glasses,” the waiter said. “Did something happen to your brother ” “No,” answered the man. “He is fine. I just gave up drinking.”

Some people have to use public transport, some dislike it and some still love it. If everyone has a car and drives anywhere they want to go, there will be serious traffic problems on the road. Luckily, trains are a good form of public transport.
British people use trains a lot. This is especially so for people who are travelling from London to Paris. Every day about 20 trains leave London. They travel at high speed and people feel glad that the trains take only 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Paris. It’s much faster to travel by train than by bus or by car. This is because people have to drive cars or buses very carefully and slowly for many reasons. such as speed limits and traffic jams. However, when you are travelling by train, the speed is almost the same and there is no traffic jam for a train.
Besides, Londoners think taking a train is one of the safest ways of travelling on the ground. Trains take quite a number of quality tests while they are made. More importantly, they have to take many safety checks before they are used on the rail track (轨道).
What’s more, trains in Britain are comfortable and provide fine services for their users. When you are on a London train, you will find that the train has comfortable tables and seats where people can sit. They also provide food services and power plugs (电源插头) for personal computers or mobile phones.
41. In a traffic jam on the road, ______________________.
A. drivers can drive fast B. drivers can drive carelessly
C. cars are not moving fast D. cars will stop working
42. The 3rd paragraph of the passage mainly talks about the ______________________ of trains.
A. speed B. safety C. services D. problems
43. Londoners often travel by train because trains are ______________________.
A. old and slow B. large, clean and powerful
C. fine and important D. fast, safe and comfortable

As spring comes, many people can enjoy the new growth. Gardening is a popular outdoor activity. It gives us beautiful plants, pleasant smelling flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables in this season. And you may have a great time getting outside in spite of (尽管) getting dirty.
__________________________
Gardening is a great activity to do with children. It gets them outdoors and off computers, televisions and other electronics. You cannot hold any electronic when your hands are filled with dirt.
Gardening can be a great teacher for children. They can learn about nature and wildlife. It can teach them about where food comes from and healthy eating. It can also help them to understand the limits of natural resources and the importance of using them carefully.
Also, gardening can help children exercise. When gardening, you must work small muscles by doing different movements-bending, twisting, stretching and lifting. Sometimes gardening needs repeated actions, which have a calming influence on the brain, but are not in the same way when we use computers.
Reducing loneliness and stress
Gardening connects people. It is a perfect time to socialize with your neighbours. Gardeners usually enjoy showing others what they grow. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens.
Gardening may also help you feel calm and happy. A study by researchers in the Netherlands found gardening may reduce the stress hormone (压力荷尔蒙) cortisol (皮质醇) in the brain. Scientists say high levels of cortisol in the body interfere (干扰) with learning and memory. It can also increase a person’s weight, blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. High levels of cortisol increase the risk for depression (抑郁), mental illness and lower life expectancy.
Being good for brain health
Gardening may help your brain stay young. In another study in 2006, researchers looked at more than 2,800 people over 60. They studied their lifestyle habits, activities and health over a 16-year period. They found that gardening could lower risk of future dementia (痴呆) by 36 percent.
Since gardening connects you to nature and pleases all of your senses, let’s go in for it.
44. Which of the following can be put in the blank in Line 4 of the passage
A. Learning about nature B. Getting away from electronic
C. Being a healthy activity for children D. Exercising yourself by gardening
45. What can we learn from the passage
A. Gardening can help neighbours form a close relationship.
B. Low levels of cortisol in the body make memory worse.
C. Too much cortisol doesn’t lead to the risk for depression.
D. Researchers studied people over 60 for a period of 36 years.
46. The writer encourages us to _________________________ in the last paragraph.
A. grow vegetables for sale B. take up gardening as a hobby
C. get away from illness D. know the advantages of gardening

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded (鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

五、还原句子(共4小题;每小题1.5分,满分6分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的六个选项中选出四个可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
We use energy to do everything. Energy lights our cities and powers our cars, trains, planes and rockets. It warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music and makes the pictures or our televisions.
51
And energy comes from many places. For example, energy from the sun’s light dries our clothes.
52 Plants keep some of that energy inside of them. When a deer eats a plant, it gets that energy. It uses that energy to live. If a tiger eats that deer, the tiger will get some of that same energy.
Many different kinds of energy come from different places, but there are two main groups we can put energy into: renewable (可再生的) and nonrenewable. Renewable energy can be used over and over again. It comes from things like sunlight, wind, plants, moving water and the Earth’s heat. We can use these things to make electricity. 53 There will always be sunlight, there will always be wind, and the Earth will always be hot inside. If we use these sources for energy, we’ll never run out.
54 We are getting most of our energy from nonrenewable sources. We say they are non-renewable because we are using them more quickly than they can be made. Most of these are fossil fuels(化石燃料)like oil, natural gas and coal. It had taken the Earth millions of years to make fossil fuels from dead plants and animals as old as dinosaurs. There is no fast way to make fossil fuels, but we are using them very quickly. Remember that it’s our duty to protect the energy.
A. But we have many energy problems now.
B. That energy also helps plants to grow.
C. And we don’t have to worry about running out of them.
D. But where does renewable energy come from
E. It powers the machines in factories and the tractors on the farms.
F. We have to learn something about renewable and nonrenewable.
