Liang Xiyan still misses her long black hair, which was cut two weeks ago.
Liang became a senior high school student in September. In her new school, the rules say that boys’ hairstyles must be cropped (剪短) and girls’ hair cannot fall below their shoulders.
Liang’s school is not alone: many have similar rules on hairstyles. Teachers think a cool hairstyle is a waste of time and money. It may also distract students from their studies. “Your personality (个性) is not shown in how you wear your hair but in your ability,” say teachers.
It’s difficult for students to follow these rules. Teenage students like to look nice but they are asked to wear school uniforms. Liang says the only way in which they can be different lies in how they wear their hair. And they want to copy their favorite stars’ hairstyles. They wouldn’t be happy in a school with strict rules.
“I prefer a school with rules on hairstyles,” said Li Man, a Senior 1 student. She said her school’s rules on hairstyles are OK but there could be some little changes. “For example, boys should be allowed to have their hair a little longer,” Li said. “But students must not dye or curl their hair (染发或烫发). This way there will not be so many complaints.”

Take a Different Route (路线) Every Day
I almost never take the same route twice. I follow different ways through the woods or around the farm, and in the city. I walked along all kinds of streets to see the new restaurants and stores. It helps the brain to always keep things interesting! And you’ll never be bored.
Play Card Games
Knowing a fun card game to play is very beneficial (有益的). I recently learned an easy card game called Gozo that can be played by up to five people, and needs two decks (副) of cards. It is a lot of fun and very wonderful. However, learning bridge (桥牌) can make your life more colourful.

A businessman was deep in debt (负债) and could see no way out. He felt hopeless and sat on the park bench and wondered what to do.
Suddenly an old man appeared. After listening to the businessman, the old man wrote a check (支票) and said to the businessman, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year later and you can give the money back at that time.” Then the old man walked away.
The businessman saw the check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller who was one of the richest men in the world!
“I can pay off all my debts at !” he thought with a smile. But instead, he decided to put the check into his safe (保险箱).
Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.
Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the check. The old man appeared. But just as the businessman was about to hand back the check, a nurse came up and led the man away. The nurse said the old man was mentally (精神上地) ill and was always telling people he was John D. Rockefeller.
The businessman just stood there, greatly surprised. Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money that had turned his life around but his confidence (信心).

Once upon a time, there was a hare. He laughed at the short leg and slow speed of the tortoise. Then the tortoise wanted to have a race with him. The hare agreed and he didn’t think the tortoise would win. They started together, and soon the hare felt tired and fell asleep under a tree. The tortoise never stopped and kept walking. Finally, when the hare woke up and reached the end, he saw the tortoise had been there already, lying on the grass. Remember: keep trying hard and you can succeed.
