Jules Verne, the “Father of Science Fiction”, lived in the era of steamships and telegraphs, but was able to imagine technologies that wouldn’t be invented for over a century. Reading Verne’s novels made me wonder how he was able to predict so much and write so technically when he wasn’t a trained scientist, physicist or engineer. How did he do it
Like a lot of people, Verne’s parents had their own ideas about his future. They had their hearts set on Verne becoming a lawyer. He knew he wanted to be a writer, but played along and went to school to become a lawyer like his father.
Verne was mostly pretending to study law in Paris while holing up in the National Library of France and digging into articles on discoveries in geology and science. Eventually, he came clean with his family that he wanted to write in a new genre(风格) that combined travel and science.
While he studied scientific journals and let all of the age’s cutting-edge discoveries feed the fires of his imagination, Verne surrounded himself with people who could be useful for his writing.
His brother was a naval officer, and Verne would often ask him to double-check what he had written about ships and maritime travel. He also asked his cousin, a math professor, to look at his equations (等式) and a mining engineer friend to help him with physics, according to author Walter James Miller, who wrote annotations (评注) to Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
“He predicted a lot of things that have happened, but that’s because he was reading a lot and talking with people who knew what was going on in the world around him, so why should we be surprised ” according to Rosalind Williams, a historian at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “It wasn’t magic. He was just paying attention to things,” she said.

Mike Fuksman, US: Learning Chinese brings me joy
One thing that I really appreciate about Chinese is that it is usually quite direct and literal. When you break each word down into its individual characters, they make sense together. “Elevator” is dianti—translated character by character, it means “electric stairs”. It’s pretty straightforward.
Learning to read the characters themselves has been a challenge, but it has also been fun and made my life more convenient.

At the age of 13,I started taking Mandarin (普通话) classes at school. It was a subject that could make the classroom deadly silent because of how difficult it was to learn. But when I arrived in China, I found that learning the language could be enjoyable.
After I moved to Beijing, I lived with locals. I tried to chat with them in Chinese, sharing details about our daily lives. Sometimes we would also go to KTV together. This was an environment where I could immerse(使······沉浸) myself in the Chinese language and culture while still expressing myself.
Jennifer Holstein, US: Learning Chinese changed my life path
Since I started learning Chinese at the age of 5, the language has been part of my life. After six years of learning, I could still barely put a sentence together. To improve my Mandarin, I moved to Beijing in high school.
The school day was long and hard. Each day we attended listening, speaking, reading and writing classes. For a 16-year old American girl, this was a shock to the system. Eventually I overcame these difficulties.

Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada. Despite the mild weather, tourists should be prepared for rain, which is practically part of the city’s lifestyle.

Jules Verne, the “Father of Science Fiction”, lived in the era of steamships and telegraphs, but was able to imagine technologies that wouldn’t be invented for over a century. Like a lot of people, Verne’s parents had their own ideas about his future. They had their hearts set on Verne becoming a lawyer. He knew he wanted to be a writer, but played along and went to school to become a lawyer like his father.
Verne was mostly pretending to study law in Paris while holing up in the National Library of France and digging into articles on discoveries in geology and science. Eventually, he came clean with his family that he wanted to write in a new genre(风格) that combined travel and science.
While he studied scientific journals and let all of the age’s cutting-edge discoveries feed the fires of his imagination, Verne surrounded himself with people who could be useful for his writing.
His brother was a naval officer, and Verne would often ask him to double-check what he had written about ships and maritime travel. One thing that I really appreciate about Chinese is that it is usually quite direct and literal. When you break each word down into its individual characters, they make sense together. “Elevator” is dianti—translated character by character, it means “electric stairs”. It’s pretty straightforward.

W: When I was twelve, my parents moved out of London to a small village in Oxford.
I was the only Asian girl in my school, and I suddenly felt a bit lonely. Luckily, a brilliant art teacher encouraged me to go to art college. However, on the day of my college interview in Oxford, I woke up late. I left the house with two odd shoes, and I didn’t notice that my bottle of chocolate milk had poured over the painting in my bag. When I finally got to the station, I got on the wrong train. Who knows if I had got on the right train that day I might have become a professional artist! But I went to the wrong one instead . I told the woman next to me on the train about what had happened and she suddenly cried with laughter. It turned out she was the producer of a comedy program on the radio.
To cut the long story short, I got the invitation a week later to attend an interview for the show. Then the rest, as to be said, is history. I’m very lucky. My life has been full of happy accidents. Now I’m in charge of the very popular TV comedy program.
