For those looking forward to exploring natural wonders, we will present four
natural wonders in the US that we believe are worth visiting.
Death Valley National Park
It is the lowest, hottest, and driest part of North America. The hottest summer on
record in the valley saw temperatures top 120.F on 40 days. Ground temperatures as
high as 201℉ have been reported. Still, Death Valley is called with the wrong words.
There are areas that are friendly to plants and animals. Death Valleys “walking” rocks
move on their own as a result of freezing and thawing (融化).
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone's Old Faithful Geyser is powered by an underground super volcano.
In 1872, Yellowstone became the world's first national park. The park's wildlife
includes bison, bears, and hundreds of other animals.
Crater (坑) of Diamonds (钻石) State Park
Discovered in Crater of Diamonds State Park, the 40-carat is the largest diamond
ever found in the US. The diamonds and the crater are by-products of a volcanic
eruption. Visitors can search the 37-acre site for diamonds and if you find it you keep it.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Located on the big island of Hawaii, the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes are the
centerpieces of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can see how the Hawaiian
Islands were born and watch the big island get bigger. Kilauea has been erupting since
1983.

Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I
had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next
door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very
friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn’t like, though, was that I was
surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get
to my second period — biology. Our teacher’s name is peau, and I think that
she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her
unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the
king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps
(沼泽).”
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a
challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr. V.,
my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays(文章 ) and read
AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40
ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it
was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing
homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook.
I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.
4. What did the author mainly write about in this passage
A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year.
C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday.
5. What should students do when peau says “alligator”
A. Sit still. B. Stop talking.
C. Listen to the teacher. D. Look at the blackboard.
6. How did the author find her first two classes
A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy.
7. Why did the author feel scared during the third period
A. Because she couldn’t focus on her work.
B. Because she found the class demanding.
C. Because she didn’t like the teacher.
D. Because she did poorly at school.

About 400 people were brought together in some 20 positions throughout Stanford
to conduct an earthquake drill (演习).
The earthquake drill was a year in the planning. It included both Stanford
University and Stanford Medicine Emergency Operation Centers(EOC)(紧急行动中
心). The university practices emergency plans now and then since it lies in the center
of earthquake plate, but this drill was different from the earlier ones.
This drill asked the university to consider how everyone in the school took on duty
after an earthquake. How would Stanford continue to feed thousands of people and
take action in the face of damage to the university How would it answer the
thousands of people who called the university and who were worried about their loved
ones
“We wanted to create an experience concentrating mainly on recovery(恢复), rather
than the immediate life safety you would experience right after an earthquake,” said
Keith Perry, the university emergency manager and training and communications
manager for Environmental Health and Safety.
The actions of all the people surprised Police officer Laura Wilson, whose job was
to manage the many people in the main EOC in the Faculty Club.“I really wanted to
express my thanks to the teamwork of everyone,”she said.“My job was made much
easier by the fact that people practice and know what to do. This is a finely honed (打
磨) machine.”
Peter is an experienced worker of Stanford Medicine EOC. He believes that with
each drill carried out, people get better at protecting public safety, repairing the
damage to the university and quickly returning the university to normal teaching and
researching activities.“I think everyone learned a lot today,” he said.

There have been many studies showing that being in nature is good for your
health. Walking in the woods is good for your well-being(健康). Living near trees can
help you live longer. But when you go for a walk in the woods, what is it particularly
about being in nature or being outdoors that makes you feel good Is it the sights or
smells or sounds ---- A new study finds it might have something to do with the birds
you hear while you have a walk.
Researchers from California Polytechnic State University studied how much the
natural sounds people hear when they're outdoors influence well-being. They found
that the“chorus(合唱)”of birds singing increased well-being in protected natural areas.
For the study, researchers put 10 hidden speakers(扬声器) with the same space gap
on two parts of trail( 小 路 ) in the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks in
Colorado. They played recorded songs from 11 kinds of birds. The researchers take
turns to play the birdsong for a few hours a day for a week, and then turned off the
speakers for a week at a time. They interviewed hikers after they passed through the
areas with the speakers.
“The main result is that hikers who heard the birdsong gave answers to questions
that showed a higher level of well-being compared to those who did not hear the
birdsong,” Biology Professor Clinton Francis, who led the research, says.
Hikers who heard more birdsong on the first part of the trail said they felt better.
Those who heard more birdsong on the second part reported that they thought more
birds lived along that part of the trail. This feeling of more birds helps make the hikers
feel better.“With the chorus, we were able to show that natural sounds have a clear
effect on the quality of hikers' experiences,” says Francis.
12.What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1
A. To bring in the topic of the text.
B To advise people to walk in nature.

Having no chances to practise English Thinking in English can bring you a big
step closer to fluency! It is not very difficult. 16 Today, we will share some
mental exercises with you.
A good first step is to think in single words. Look around you. What do you see
17 As you continue with this, it becomes a habit. Things are going to
flash into your head—computer, telephone, chair, desk, etc., whatever it is and
wherever you are. 18 For example, if you couldn’t think of the word
“garage(车库)”, you can say in your mind, “The place inside which I put my car” or
“It’s next to my house. I keep things there”.
The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences. For example, when sitting in a
park, you can tell yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are
playing”. 19 You can also practise describing your daily activities. As
beginning-level learners, you can describe the day using the simple present verb form,
like “I put on my shirt” and “He drives the bus”. You can also mentally make plans in
the morning or list things you’ve done before going to bed. 20 So the skill
level is a little higher.
When you are practising it every day, over and over again, little by little, you are
thinking in English.
A. But it takes effort and practice.
B. It is extremely easy to understand.
C. This would require other verb tenses.
D. At some points, you will need a dictionary.
E. Try to name each thing around you.
F. Then describe things you don’t know the words for.
G. Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.
