一、知识点讲解
1. train verb
1). to prepare someone or yourself for a job, activity, or sport, by learning skills and/or by mental or physical exercise训练,培训;锻炼
例:She trained hard for the race, sometimes running as much as 60 miles a week.
她为参加赛跑比赛而刻苦训练,有时一周能跑60英里。
2). to direct the growth of a plant in a particular direction by cutting it and tying it(通过修剪、捆扎)使(植物)朝特定方向生长;修整
例:The vines were trained over an arch, providing shade as well as fruit.
葡萄藤被修整得在拱门上方生长,不仅结出果实还能遮阴。
2. volunteer
n.
a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it自愿参加者,(尤指帮助别人的)志愿者
例:The Health clinic is relying on volunteers to run the office and answer the phones.
这家健康门诊依靠志愿者来负责办公室的日常工作和接听电话。
v.
1).to offer to do something that you do not have to do, often without having been asked to do it and/or without expecting payment自愿做;无偿做;作志愿者;主动提出做
例:He volunteered for the army. 他自愿参军。
2). to give information without being asked主动提供(信息)
例:If I were you, I wouldn't volunteer any details of what happened. 要是我的话,我不会主动说出所发生事情的任何细节。
3. meaningful adjective
1). intended to show meaning, often secretly富有意义的,意味深长的
例:
He raised one eyebrow in a meaningful way. 他别有一番深意地扬起一道眉毛。
2). useful, serious, or important有用的;有意义的
例: Having the opportunity to work would make retirement more meaningful for many senior citizens. 对许多退休者来说,有机会工作会使退休生活更有意义。
4. achieve verb
to succeed in finishing something or reaching an aim, especially after a lot of work or effort
(尤指经过努力)完成,达到,实现
例: She finally achieved her ambition to visit South America.
她终于实现了去南美洲旅游的梦想。
5. task noun
a piece of work to be done, especially one done regularly, unwillingly, or with difficulty
任务;(尤指经常、不情愿或很难做的)工作;(苦)差事
例: We usually ask interviewees to perform a few simple tasks on the computer just to test their aptitude. 我们通常让接受面试者在电脑上进行一些简单操作,只想测测他们的能力。
6. give up 扔弃;停止;投降;自首
例:What he said meant that he would give up the plan.他的话意味着他将放弃这个计划。

give out 分发, 发出(气味、热等), 发表, 用尽, 精疲力竭
例: The teacher is giving out the examination papers.老师正在分发试卷。

二、语法精讲
It is adj to-infinitive 和It is adj.+of/ for sb to-infinitive
1). It is+ adjective to-infinitive意为“做某事是……的”。在It is+ adjective to-infinitive该句型中,正是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式。该句型表达对某一件事的看法。
例: It's useful to learn some life skill.学习一些生活技能是有用的。
It is interesting to go on a picnic at this time of year.每年的这个时候去野餐很有趣。
2). It is+ adjective +for sb.+to-infinitive意为"对某人来说,做某事是……的"。
例:It's necessary for students to do eye exercises twice a day.对学生来说,一天做两次眼保健操是必要的。
注意:
在此句型中,形容词是对做这件事(即动词不定式所表示的动作)的评价,与sb.没有直接联系,因此常用easy、difficult、hard、important、necessary、(im) possible 等形容词。
3). It is+ adjective +of sb.+to-infinitive意为“某人做某事真是/太……了”。其中sb.与动词不定式之间存在逻辑上的主谓关系。
例:It is very kind of him to help us. 他真好,帮助了我们。
注意:
在此句型中,形容词是对做这件事的人(即sb.) 的评价,因此常用brave、careless polite、good、foolish、silly、helpful、clever 等表示赞扬或批评的形容词。
例:It is careless of you to lose so many things. 你丢了这么多东西,真是粗心。
2.as & like
两者都可以用来表示人与人、物与物、动作与动作、状态与状态之间有相似之处。
1). as作介词时往往表示职业、职务、作用,表示的是事实,意为"作为……"。
例:Let me speak to you as a father.让我作为一位父亲同你说话。
2). like只表示"像",不是事实。
例:Let me speak to you like a father.让我像意为父亲一样同你说话。

三、阅读理解
Like many high school graduates, Maggie Doyne didn't go straight to college. She decided to travel and arrived in western Nepal in 2006. A war had just ended there and left many children living on the streets. They were often forced to work at hard physical jobs for little money.
One day, while walking down a country road, Doyne saw a little girl breaking up rocks. She soon learned that 7-year-old Hima sold the rocks to support her family. With deep sadness, she decided to pay Hima's tuition(学费) for school. Encouraged by the changes in the child, Doyne thought, "If we can help one child, why not 10 "
Doyne felt that the street children's greatest need was a home. She found a piece of land for sale and bought it with $5,000 she saved from years of babysitting(当临时保姆).
