As we advance into the third quarter of 2020, educators are watching ahead and wondering whether there is a possibility of reopening education campuses and in-person teaching anytime soon. The ongoing pandemic(流行病) has changed several aspects of human life, including education and potential online education trends. It has urged global experimentation with remote teaching, and most students accept the change from in-person to online learning. One of the newest trends in the education industry is microlearning. Microlearning provides information about school subjects to students in an exciting manner by dividing the course material into small, manageable parts for a suitable learning experience. It is suitable for people who are unable to provide attention to a matter for more than an hour.
As online education is entering the mainstream, students are looking for more straightforward and easier strategies to acquire knowledge, and this is where microlearning enters the scene. It allows learners to grasp bite- sized information quickly and effectively.
A great example of microlearning is the language learning application Duolingo which allows users to learn a piece of any language in small, frequent lessons. Over the next year, as far as online education trends go, we can expect to witness an increase in such educational applications and microlearning.
Online education is taking over traditional classroom-based education by providing students with a personalized learning experience that removes location, time, or device limits.
Traditional classroom lectures might not be useful for everyone, as each individual has a different pace of understanding and interest. Therefore, it is crucial to provide learners with a choice that encourages the most effective learning process. Personalized learning is one of the online education trends that will dominate the coming year.
The concept of traditional education has changed dramatically since the beginning and mass acceptance of online education. The world is busy in remote teaching experimentation, and the online education trends may impact learning in the future.
1.What influence does the pandemic have on students
2.How does microlearning give information to students
3.Please paraphrase the underlined sentence in your own words.
4.Please briefly present your opinion about online learning. (About 40 words.)
Read the paragraph and answer the questions. Pay attention to the words in bold.
There is no month in the whole year in which nature wears a more beautiful appearance than in the month of August. Spring has many beauties, and May is a fresh and blooming month, but the charms of this time of year are enhanced by their contrast with the winter season. August has no such advantage. It comes when we remember nothing but clear skies, green fields, and sweet-smelling flowers—when the memory of snow, and ice, and bleak winds, has faded from our minds as completely as they have disappeared from the earth—and yet what a pleasant time it is! Orchards and fields sing with the sound of work; trees bend beneath the thick clusters of rich fruit which bow their branches to the ground; and the wheat, piled in graceful sheaves, or waving in every gentle wind that sweeps above it, tinges the landscape with a golden colour. A soft, pleasant light appears to hang over the whole earth; the influence of the season seems to extend itself even to a passing wagon, whose slow motion across the well-reaped field is seen by the eye, but makes no loud noises upon the ear.
(Adaptation from The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens)

Today, technological advances are rapidly making it possible to automate much of the work currently carried out by humans. This applies to both blue-collar jobs, through robotics and the Internet of Things, and white-collar work, through artificial intelligence. The wide applicability of these technologies has led to broad concern about the destruction of jobs. Indeed, according to a 2014 Oxford study, 47% of jobs in the US could be replaced by automated processes in the next two decades.
Of course, as many have noted, while technology has always removed the need for some types of jobs, it also creates new ones. Technology is a set of tools that we use in different ways to increase efficiency. The Industrial Revolution destroyed some jobs but created many more. It also increased the total wealth of society and began to create a middle class who could enjoy health, education and other benefits that previously had been available only to the wealthiest. It can be challenging to predict the kinds of jobs that this new revolution will create and in what quantities, which makes the situation seem worse than it actually is. But nine of the top ten most in-demand jobs of 2012 did not exist in 2003, suggesting that this latest revolution is creating new employment opportunities.
For many, this picture is overly optimistic. The new jobs require a completely different skills set – you can’t turn an assembly plant worker into a data scientist overnight, if at all. Others are concerned that we are facing a permanent reduction in the need for human labour. Science fiction has long imagined a future where we no longer have to work and can spend our time on more noble pursuits. Could it be that we are reaching that inflection point in human history If we are, neither our social norms nor our economic systems are ready for it. Today, self-worth is inherently tied up with jobs, professions, careers and trades.
7.How is white-collar work automated by technology

8.What is technology according to the passage

9.Please briefly present the benefits that technological advances bring to you. (about 40 words)

Until last January. I was very much a prose(散文)writer. I loved to write short stories but couldn’t stand poetry because it seemed like a lazy version. But then I entered a local poetry competition and won a prize. I read my poem at the award ceremony, and received a positive reaction from the audience. It was then that I realized poetry was much more interesting and diverse than I had previously thought, and that maybe I wasn’t too bad at writing it.
Since February. I have been trying to write poetry as often as possible, and it proves that somehow I like it now. Poetry isn’t a lazier version of prose, but it can be an easier one. This is because there are fewer rules in poetry and it is far more personal. What makes it so interesting is that it is told through the poet’s style.
This is what makes writing poetry such a good method of calming yourself down Writing about worries, stresses and insecurities can really help you to make sense of how you feel about them, and to create something-valuable from a bad situation. It also helps poems to catch on quickly. People love to hear personal stories about troubles they also struggle with.
Not only is poetry a fantastic form of therapy (治疗), but it can also earn you respect and sometimes even a career. As more and more poetry competitions for young people are set up, it is easier than ever to get recognized. As well as competitions, there are events such as poetry salons where you can share poems with others. Social media can also be a good platform for poetry.
So why not give it a try?Write about whatever is in your mind, and don’t worry about following any rules. Let yourself be inspired and inspire someone else.

Scientists have developed a necklace (项链) described as the “diet choker”. The WearSense necklace can keep eyes on everything that goes into your mouth, and sends you a caution to warn you not to go on eating if you overeat. WearSense has a special sensor (传感器), which uses the vibrations (振动) on your neck to tell when you are eating and drinking.
The researchers have connected it with a smart-phone app which sends a signal if you go over your daily calorie limit. It also lets you know if you eat too much of the wrong kind of food. The team said WearSense works because each food makes a different type of vibrations on the neck, so the necklace is able to work out what it is you’re eating using the sensor, which measures changes in pressure or force.
In tests with a limited menu, the WearSense necklace has guessed the difference between solid and liquid foods with 90 percent accuracy (准确度). It could also tell between hard and soft foods about 75 percent of the time.
The necklace asks the user’s age, height, weight and their goal such as to lose weight or stay the same. It will then tell them what they have eaten, how fast they eat their food and gives them advice-such as if you miss a meal, it tells how it could leave you tired.
The research said that other usage they could see for the necklace included when somebody takes a pill it can ensure they take pills on time. Even smokers who are trying to quit could benefit from the necklace, as it could tell if they are smoking from the movement in their neck.

A wise teacher once told me that every teenager needs to experience a not-so-fun first job from working at a grocery store to the fast food industry.
Now I still remember my first day at a fast food restaurant three years ago. I wanted to save up money and buy my own car, so I applied everywhere I could that summer. The restaurant called me right away and I thought to myself, this is going to be easy. Within four hours of my first shift (.轮班), I had angry customers who complained how slow I was. I watched in fear as a kid spilled his milk everywhere, and I heard the words that no 16-year-old boy or anyone for that matter wants to hear: "Mike, there's a problem in the men's bathroom and you might want gloves for this one." I realized right away that working at the restaurant was not going to be a picnic. The manager expected a clean environment and, particularly, fast service with a friendly smile.
Over three years later I still work at that restaurant whenever I go home during vacations. I love my co-workers there and all the customers know who I am. Every morning the same senior citizens come in and get their morning coffees. They chat with us workers and joke around. Our smiles have just as much to do with them making us a part of their everyday lives as the coffee does.
From my first job at the restaurant, I learned teamwork and devotion. I also learned staying positive no matter how rough things seem to get. I will forever carry the experience that I gained at the restaurant with me as I go forward in my life.

Nowadays, people all over the world are becoming more and more connected, as if the world were getting smaller – as if we were living in a “global village”.
Technology is largely responsible for bringing people together. Channels of communication, such as the mobile phone and the internet, have made it possible to speak instantly with someone on the other side of the planet, enabling us to form close connections with people of completely different cultures. The television, meanwhile, is a window on the world, giving us quick and easy access to other cultures and lifestyle.
Cultural exchange helps us to be more inclusive and to overcome culture shock. But intrusiveness doesn’t mean that our cultures will merge into one another. Rather, it’s about countries and people making a joint effort to come together to create a more harmonious and understanding world, so that we can all enjoy the mutual benefits.
29.What phenomenon does the passage describe

30.What effect does technology have on cultural exchange

John Snow, an English physician, was known for his seminal studies of cholera and widely viewed as the father of contemporary epidemiology. His best-known studies include his investigation of London’s Broad Street pump outbreak, which occurred in 1854, and his “Grand Experiment,” a study comparing waterborne cholera cases in two regions of the city — one receiving sewage-contaminated water and the other receiving relatively clean water. Snow’s innovative reasoning and approach to the control of this deadly disease remain valid and are considered exemplary for epidemiologists throughout the world.
Snow’s respected reputation in epidemiology arose from two classic studies of the third epidemic to reach England, which began in 1853 and lasted until 1855. The first study concerned the Broad Street pump outbreak of 1854, which killed many persons in the Soho neighbourhood. He used skilled reasoning, graphs, and maps to demonstrate the impact of the contaminated water coming from the Broad Street pump. The second study was the “Grand Experiment,” also of 1854, which compared London neighbourhoods receiving water from two different companies. One company relied on inlets coming from the upper River Thames, located away from urban pollution, and the other company relied on inlets in the heart of London, where the contamination of water with sewage was common. Snow showed the harmful effect of contaminated water in two nearly equivalent populations, and he suggested intervention strategies to control the epidemic. His ideas and observations, including innovative disease maps, were published in his book On the Mode of Communication of Cholera (1855). Later, in the 1930s, Snow’s work was republished as a classic work in epidemiology, resulting in lasting recognition of his work.

Developed by Spanish fashion brand Sepiia, the Ultimate Smart Shirt 3.0 is a special men’s clothing that can reduce the wearer’s stress, improve blood flow and increase energy levels.
Sepiia has been developing smart clothing for years now. Its first-generation clothing included astaining-resistant fabric (抗污织物) around the cuffs (袖口) and neck, thus requiring less frequent washing, while the second-generation introduced a more breathable fabric that prevented too much sweat, while also being smell-resistant. For its latest generation of smart clothing, Sepiia introduced the concept of health, by developing a fabric that has all the characteristics of previous generations, as well as new bioceramic nanoparticles (生物陶瓷纳米粒) that improve the wearer’s health.
According to Sepiia, the bioceramic nanoparticles are able to reproduce the FIR (Far Infrared Rays 远红外线)from the sun. The heat produced by these rays gets into the wearer’s skin and benefits the muscles, joints and blood vessels by promoting blood circulation.
The bioceramic material also absorbs harmful rays from the sun, thus protecting the wearer’s skin, and reflects the sun’s rays, creating a virtual heat barrier, keeping the wearer cool and comfortable.
“We started with clothes that were comfortable, and now our goal is for fashion to evolve towards personal health” Sepiia CEO, Federico Sainz, said.
Athletes are already using bioceramic nanoparticles in their sleepwear to improve their performance, but Sepiia wants to bring the same benefits to the general public, all through the day.
The Ultimate Smart Shirt 3.0 is already available for pre-order via Sepiia’s Kickstarter page, for a price of $98. If that seems expensive, just keep in mind that Sepiia’s smart shirt is a lot more serviceable than ordinary shirts, as well as stain-resistant, so you’ll be able to wear it for many years. Who knows, you may even end up saving money.
36.What is the difference between the latest generation of smart clothing and the previous two (no more than 5 words)
37.What can the Ultimate Smart Shirt 3.0 make wearers feel (no more than 5 words)
38.What benefit can sleepwear containing bioceramic nanoparticles bring to athletes (no more than 5 words)

Qingming Shang He Tu
No doubt, one of the most admired Chinese paintings of all time is the Qingming Shang He Tu, or Along the River During the Qingming Festival. The painting is on a silk scroll that is 24.8 cm wide and 528.7 cm long, bearing Emperor Huizong’s name.It was painted by Zhang Zeduan, who was a court painter during the Northern Song Dynasty.
This amazingly detailed painting quickly became a national treasure. Over the centuries that follow hundreds of copies of it were made, many of which became national treasures themselves. Although the original painting was lost for some time, it is now proudly placed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
The painting is exhibited for only brief periods every few years. However using computer animation, the painting has been remade into an animated digital version for all to enjoy. It contains moving characters and objects, showing life along the Bian River during the Qingming Festival, a time when Chinese people visit their ancestors’ graves.
Flowing from right to left, the painting begins by showing the countryside outside Bianjing City, the capital of China at that time. There are a few houses and a few people traveling back to Bianiing. The scene soon becomes more crowded. The road beside the river becomes packed with restaurants, and the river becomes full of boats. Then we see the Rainbow Bridge arching over the river. On both sides of the bridge are people selling food nd drink, while travellers pass by. Soon, the city begins to emerge. We see temples, inns, and large houses. The roads are now filled with people travelling on foot, and in carts and sedan chairs. Then we come to the first city. Then we come to the first city gate.Through the gate is passing a line of camels carrying goods. In the city, there are butcher shops, doctor’s clinics, hotels, inns, houses, and fabric shops. The streets are still crowded with people, but most of them are relaxing and taking it easy.
The painting ends here, but the scroll does not. About half of the scroll has the seals of its previous owners, along with poems praising the painting’s beauty. There is also a note which gives a short biography of Zhang Zeduan. These seals and poems, along with the note, are the reasons why many experts claim this to be the original painting.
The Qingming Shang He Tu is not only a true work of art, but it also gives us a rare insight into daily life in ancient China. So often, history only contains the stories of emperors, generals, and important events. This painting’s great appeal is that it provides us with a look into ordinary people’s lives in the Song Dynasty.

The letter of recommendation (推荐信) will never outweigh (比……更重要) a student’s performance in the classroom, but it can be an important factor in the college admission process.
A strong recommendation letter will offer a good sense of a student’s personality beyond just their grades. It’s important to think about which teacher knows you best. The fact that you received an “A” in a class is not a good enough reason to choose that teacher. Some of the best letters come from teachers who witnessed a student struggling with course material or showing commitment (投入). These are the kinds of qualities a college wants to see.
If a college requests two letters of recommendation, make sure that each letter reflects a different part of your education. In other words, don’t ask both your chemistry and physics teachers. Students need to demonstrate varied strengths and interests to colleges.
Try to include one recommendation from a non-core subject teacher––such as art or music––or a coach or club adviser.
How exactly can you help your “recommender” write a great letter
The best thing a student can do besides asking early is to provide their recommender with information. This could include extracurricular (课外的) activities, any honors, scholarships or awards, what you’ve done over the summers, and evidence of your commitment to community service.
Here are some suggestions of things you could include in a folder for your recommender.
A resume that shares how you’ve been spending your time outside school when you’re not doing homework.
Your Personal Statement.
A brief paragraph on what you’re looking for in your college experience. This is where you can address your specific interests, possible majors and the types of colleges that represent a good fit for you.
45.What does the underlined word “these” in Paragraph 2 refer to (不多于7个单词)
46.Besides asking early, what can a student do to help their recommender (不多于6个单词)

Lillian Hanson, a college junior, expects to graduate in about two years. Mrs. Hanson, a rather unusual student, plans to go on to take more courses after she gets her degree. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from most of her classmates
What sets Lillian Hanson apart from the college crowd is her age — 73 years. She has been going to college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.
When Mrs. Hanson graduated from high school, she went to her local bank and asked for a loan for college tuition and fees. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college. He thought she should be home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Mrs. Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college. She still lives with her husband on the farm that has been in the family for five generations.
Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children were grown up, she tried again.
She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age is to be sitting in class for long periods of time. Because she is not able to move as quickly and easily as she used to be, Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around between classes to keep from getting rigid. At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give Mrs. Hanson big applause when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her goals were.

Ren Sainan chanced upon the funeral industry in 2019. With a degree in e-commerce, she joined an online retailer that deals in funeral supplies after several failures in attempting to get a “normal” job upon graduation.
Encouraged by her family, colleagues and friends, Ren realized that what matters most is living for the moment and working for what she loves. Putting aside the opinions of others, she began to model for new shrouds (寿衣) for live-broadcasting as part of her daily job. Gradually, she found that working in the funeral industry is meaningful and that everyone has a story.
One night during the Spring Festival, Ren received a call. A girl sobbed, asking whether she had a green burial suit, as she was preparing for the funeral of her father who used to be a soldier at Jiayu Pass, safeguarding China’s northwestern frontier. He had a deep affection for the color green.
Searching through piles of clothes at the warehouse, Ren failed to find the color. Moved by the daughter and the father, she decided to make a green-colored suit along with a tailor at the company.
In the beginning, Ren was afraid of telling her mother about working as a model and designer for burial clothes. “After I accepted myself in this job, I talked about it with my mother. Her first reaction was ‘you should resign,’” Ren said. She made a trip home in Pingdingshan, a two-hour drive from Zhengzhou where she works, in hope to impress her mother with various products. “She softened her tone as these designs upended her perception of saying goodbye to the world,” she said.
In traditional Chinese culture, the discussion of death is taboo (禁忌的), and the shrouds, along with other funeral supplies, are things people avoided talking about in daily life. And even with good employment opportunities, people were reluctant to work as funeral directors.
As a shroud model, Ren’s presentation has changed people’s fixed images of the funeral supplies. While amazed at the diverse and personalized development of the funeral industry, Chinese netizens have also expressed their admiration for Ren’s job.
Aging, sickness, and death are common states of life. It might be, in a sense, lucky to have an opportunity to experience the range of human emotions from joy to grief, from despair to hope.
