To many people even the word “work” sounds unpleasant, not necessarily because they are lazy. The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office ,may work hard at the weekend ,painting the house or digging the garden.
What is the reason ,then In most cases, it is because these people simply do not enjoy the job they are doing .It does not give them any real satisfaction .It may be quite easy, like making up wooden boxes, but it is very boring. Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one ,such as attaching a door handle to a car .But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say :I have made something !
Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this is the way society is organized, No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect. Society cannot function a single day without the “dull and boring” jobs.

My first semester at MIT (Massuchusetts Institute of Technology麻省理工大学) was awesome — I was very motivated and got all A’s, with everything being pass. My second semester went pretty well, too, but I struggled very much in organic chemistry and ended up with a B.This was my first B ever, and though I was disappointed, I shook it off and tried to stay positive.
I was not even sure why I took organic chemistry, since I was interested in math. My parents were pressuring me to become a doctor like them so I guess I was trying to make them satisfied. But at the same time, I was desperately running away from them and their control. I was confused and had no idea what I wanted to do in the future.
For my third semester, I took Linear Algebra (线性代数). I had never done higher-level math before, and I ended up with a D.I didn’t do that well in my other classes, either. I started skipping classes more and more, sleeping more and more. It seemed like all my friends were doing so well, getting some internship opportunities over the summers, while my parents made me fly home and stay with them every summer. The next semester I got 2 Fails.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10,869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After a good rest, the illness lessened and I felt eager to experience this hike.

11.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Seniority in Promotion Is Not a Wise Business Practice
It's not always an easy decision for companies when it comes to filling managerial spots. In the past promoting an employee has been popularly handled by means of basic analysis of the employees' past performance nod seniority, In some cases, the individual's performance has been considered more important while in others the amount of time they have been with the company has been the deciding factor. Nevertheless, seniority is a standard that has never been left out, However, in the contemporary business world, the importance of seniority in promotion is being destroyed as a growing number of companies look outside of their organizations when trying to fill top managerial spots.
Unlike experienced employees who have been with the company for a long time, new people are mare likely generate creative ideas. In rapidly changing markets, innovative and creative talents are sought by many companies in order to adapt to the market. To meet their needs, companies have more to gain by selecting outside employees since they are more willing to try new techniques and less afraid of breaking tradition when introducing new ideas. Thus, rather than promoting existing employees, it might be a wiser management decision to bring in outside talent.
An additional advantage to this new system is that it prevents employees from feeling that they only need to wait for their seniority to provide them with a promotion. Simply put no matter how long they have been with the company, employees have to contribute diligently to the organization if they want to move up the career ladder, As soon as people realize that the company could just as easily bring in a new person, employees will stop judging themselves against each other because they are no longer competing against their colleagues but everyone in the entire industry. As a result, they will begin to show more effort to bring the level of their work up to what they imagine is a much higher standard.

12.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Does Zoom exhaust you
During the COVID-19 pandemic, as social distancing has kept people apart physically, more people are logging on to popular video chat platforms to connect with colleagues, family and friends. And as a result, virtual meetings, or “zooming”, have skyrocketed. However, communication professor Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of the Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) examined the psychological consequences of spending hours per day on these platforms, warning that those video calls are likely tiring you out.
In a normal meeting, people will variously be looking at the speaker, taking notes, or looking elsewhere. But on Zoom calls, everyone is looking at everyone, all the time. A listener is treated nonverbally like a speaker, so even if you don’t speak once in a meeting, you are still looking at faces staring at you. The amount of eye contact is dramatically increased. “Social anxiety of public speaking is one of the biggest fears that exist in our population,” Bailenson said. “When you’re standing up there and everybody’s staring at you, that’s a stressful experience.”
Most video platforms show a square of what you look like on camera during a chat, which is unnatural. Bailenson said, “In the real world, if somebody was following you around with a mirror constantly so that you were seeing yourself in a mirror while you were talking to people, making decisions, giving feedback, etc., that would just be crazy.” He cited studies showing that when you see a reflection of yourself, you are more critical of yourself and there will be negative emotional consequences.
Moreover, video chats dramatically reduce our usual mobility. In-person and audio phone conversations allow humans to walk around and move. But with videoconferencing, most cameras have a set field of view, meaning a person has to generally stay in the same spot. Movement is limited in ways that are not natural. “There’s a growing research now that says when people are moving, they’re performing better cognitively,” Bailenson said.

English Reading After Class
English reading after class is quite common among students nowadays. A survey was conducted among students.
To begin with, reading newspapers is the most popular way, with 60% of the students considering it as their favourite way in English reading. After that, some people view magazines as their reading material, accounting for 45% of the students. Still others prefer to read English novels and visit English websites when enhancing English skills, making up 27% and 15% respectively.
In my opinion, reading novels and magazines can enhance student's writing skills while newspapers and websites are beneficial to broadening their horizons. My suggestion is that students try different approaches when reading English after class, through which they may find the most suitable ways.
2.A Survey on Choosing A College
Nowadays, more and more senior high school students pay much attention to choosing the most ideal college of their own in order to get a better education. There are many factors that they should take into consideration. In this context, a survey have been conducted to figure out the main factors affecting students’ decisions.
From the histogram, four factors are listed. We can see that the interest of majors is a factor that most students consider first, 175 students has chosen it. Then the fame of a college comes to the second place, 150 student agree with it. Thirdly, 90 students believes that reasonable charges are very important for them to make up their mind. Last but not least, 70 students regard the convenient traffic as an necessary factor to choose a college.
As far as I’m concerned, I will allow for the interest of majors and reasonable charges when choosing a college. For one thing, interest plays a big part in motivating a student to study further; for another thing, reasonable charges can make a student not worry heavy economic burden.
All in all, every student should make their decisions seriously when choosing a college.
3.Recently, a survey on homework preference has been conducted among senior three students.
The results are as follows: more than half of the students, about 54%, usually put their math homework in the first place while only 7% would rank Chinese as the most important. Meanwhile, English is regarded as most significant by 18% of the participants, and the other subjects attract the attention of 21% of the students.
Undoubtedly, the results reflect the position of each subject in Gaokao. As one of the fundamental subjects, math always comes first in all subjects. Besides, some students hold the view that math is most interesting and challenging, and it seems easier for us to have a sense exists of achievement in it. By contrast, some students, especially boys, find it hard to obtain immediate results when doing Chinese and English homework.
However, each subject has its unique charm and they are of the same value. Therefore, I think we should take every subject seriously and improve our studies in a balanced way.
4.Labor Education Counts
The picture vividly illustrates that labor education plays an important role in nurturing teenagers’ development, cultivating their all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique. Just like the tree in the picture, it is thriving on the boy’s watering.
When it comes to my experiences of labour, making a fruit plate after Tiktok struck me as an unforgettable one. I first collected some kinds of fruit like apples, oranges, strawberries and bananas. Then came the most challenging part, cutting them into the style in the video, which took me about thirty minutes. After that, I shaped them on a plate into a blossoming flower with delicious sauce. To my delight, when I served it to my families, they all spoke highly of it.
No pains, no gains. Through the hands-on experience, not only do I gain a sense of achievement, but I also appreciate that labour itself is a kind of enjoyment and a must for our personal growth.
5.To help you determine the most brilliant occupation option, the following things deserve being considered.
Long-term vision. Focusing solely on your starting salary is short-sighted. It’s essential to look at the big picture. Job security. You should assess the stability of the company’s finance. Is the institution well managed Does the department have reliable credit
Working hours. You’d better guarantee you’re willing to spend the qualified work hours your department announces.
Prospects for advancement. Can your employer ensure the trend of your company’s moving up Are there relevant retraining programmes to sharpen your skills
6.A Cycling Tour
A cycling tour was organized by our class last Sunday, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience.
As scheduled, we set off at 7:30 last Sunday at the school gate, rode orderly all the way, and finally arrived at the City Lake safely. To start with, we held a race down the bicycle path around the lake, which provided us great fun. Then we slowly rode to appreciate the fascinating scenery around us. What’s more, the teacher took a lot of precious photos of us.
Through this activity, not only did we refresh our minds, but also we fully experienced the pleasure of outdoor sports.
7.1.In the passage , the author mainly stressed the importance of small and ordinary work, such as cleaning the street because of their essentiality for the organization of the society and thinks those doing such jobs should be respected greatly.
2.There is no doubt that what a cleaner does is more harder compared with any other jobs in the society. On one hand, they must get up in the early morning every day to clean the street while we are sill in the sweet sleeping dreams. On the other hand, they also suffer from less respect and lower pay, working all day on the street whether it is sun shines strongly or snow, wind heavily.
Nobody could imagine what an bad environment we would live in if there were no cleaners in the city.Wherever we go , there is rubbish. Maybe we would soon be drowned in the mountain of rubbish. Even worse, if there were no change about that, diseases would spread at a very quick speed. Is there anything that can be worse than this !From the above, I can draw the conclusion safely that even the smallest and the most ordinary job, such as cleaning the street is also the necessary part to keep the society going smoothly.Consequently, those who do those most insignificant jobs should get respect as much as those being engineers or teachers.
8.范文
From the pictures we can see young Germans burying themselves in reading on the subway while young Chinese are addicted to their phones, mostly playing games, chatting or watching videos.
The phenomenon sets us thinking. If the young generation have no preference for reading, how could a nation be promising As we know, reading makes a full man. Not only does it enrich our life but also it helps us develop the ability of critical thinking.
It’s high time something was done to change the situation. As for individuals, I strongly suggest that we youth put down phones and pick up books. Saving an hour every day for reading should be a habit, which will benefit our whole life. Our government should create an atmosphere of nationwide reading. With more libraries and books available to the public, I’m sure more and more young people will fall in love with reading.
9. My fifth semester, I realized that I was awful at higher-level math. I lost all my confidence in these subjects. Then I went to a dance club to learn how to dance. I slept all day long, then went to practice dance and then went back to sleep again. As expected, I failed all of my classes and had to withdraw from MIT.
Since I was forced to drop out of university, I had no choice but to tell my parents. Instead of yelling or hitting me, they just held me and hugged me tightly. The next day, my dad took me to a nearby art college to go on my education. Before my first biology test, I was more than nervous. But I passed finally. Then I joined in a biology lab. Gradually I regained my confidence. Not until at that moment did I realized that I liked it very much. I wanted to be a scientist and I would work hard to realize it.
10.In my hundreds of hiking trips, I have never experienced such a difficult situation as now. I have suffered from physical pain, and my willpower has gradually been worn away. However, the kindness of the hotel owner has made me feel like a spring breeze, which has further strengthened my determination to persist in hiking. After hearing that I wanted to continue, the boss and other people in the hotel expressed their support, but in order to ensure my safety, they were willing to continue with me, so we formed a small team and began to march towards the top of the mountain.
At this moment, the sun was falling, and the top of the mountain was golden under the rising sun. Looking at this beautiful scene, I suddenly felt that all the hardships I had experienced before had disappeared at this moment. I had achieved my goals and aspirations. Suddenly, I felt a bit dizzy. I staggered back for a moment, and supported me forcefully with both hands behind my back. I was the hotel owner, and perhaps there was nothing more satisfying for me than now. I had the sense of conquest to climb the top of the mountain, and the sense of fulfillment to be accompanied by friends. These are all my most precious assets.
11.One possible version:
Nowadays, more companies prefer to select outside employees in promotion instead of considering employees' past performance and seniority mainly for two reasons/advantages. One is that outside employees are more likely to produce creative ideas, which helps companies adapt to the market. The other is that it stops employees thinking their seniority guarantees a promotion, which helps enhancing employees' work level.
12.According to Jeremy Bailenson, although virtual meetings are popular, they can be exhausting. Firstly, excessive amounts of eye contact may cause people feel stressed. Secondly, seeing yourself reflected during video chats constantly contributes to negative emotions. Thirdly, video chats greatly prevent us from moving in a natural way, which reduces cognitive performance.
