Studying in the library can help many students focus better, especially if their only other option is to study in a noisy home or residence hall. Library study is also handy for groups of students who want to study together.
1 . Even if you would usually bring your computer or MP3 player to study while by yourself, leave that behind to study with a group. If you do pack these devices in your bag, be aware that you can only use them if your group takes a break or has self-study time during the meeting. 2 . And you can leave them behind altogether if you think you might be attracted to do so.
Stick to a normal floor. If the library is large enough to have a designated quiet floor, stay off it. Quiet floors are meant for individual study. 3 . As such, you should stick with a floor that is not designated as a quiet area.
Find a large table. 4 . If you have a small group of two or three people, a small circular table will still probably work. If you have a group that is larger than that, though, you will likely need a larger rectangular table.
Reserve a larger study room or meeting room. Some libraries will allow you to use any study room as long as it is open when you get there. For exceptionally large groups, consider asking about using a large meeting room at the library. 5 . Oftentimes, you will need to reserve the room in advance, but this is not always the case.
A.Make sure that everyone can sit comfortably
B.Do not bring them out in the middle of the group work
C.Only bring materials that are relevant to your group work
D.These kinds of rooms tend to have stricter conditions placed on them
E.Find out what your library's policy is concerning the individual rooms
F.Make sure to bring any textbooks or notebooks as with individual study
G.During a group study session, you will need to speak with other group members
Relations between Architecture and Culture
A country is not only identified by its people and government, but also by its architecture. 6 For example, when one thinks of India, we think of the Tahj Mahal. The Egyptians are another amazing example. Their environment and culture produced the great pyramids. How do modern cultures produce and maintain such beautiful architecture
Slovenians gained independence in 1991. The country is now economically the most progressive one. It is now helping to modernize the factories and by doing so has actually helped lower poverty rates. Generally, their world around them is modernizing. 7 Everyday life focuses in the squares, churches and the marketplace. These Slovenian towns have many well-preserved buildings with styles of architecture dating back from the 1100’s. Many churches such as Sticna Abbey and Podsreda Castle are magnificent examples of the Roman architecture.
8 For centuries, homes have been made out of mud houses built along the main dirt road. The roof could be used for an oven, to hold chickens, or just as storage. Cairo, one of the larger cities, the older parts of it are still the heart of Egypt although built with Islamic and Coptic monuments.
Chinese architecture probably has the most cultural influence. Traditionally buildings were designed for its width, not its height. Every important building is guarded around a large wall to protect their assets. While ordinary dwellings are grey and dull, palaces and places of importance are quite colorful. 9 Each Chinese home has their entrance at the front and facing the east with a screen because it is believed that spirits travel straight and cannot go through screen.
Every culture can inspire a type of architecture that can range from landmarks to everyday homes. Religion and family seem to be the most common influences overall. 10
A.Architecture is a product of cultural diversity.
B.The purpose of a south-facing entrance is to avoid north winds.
C.Through architecture it’s possible to judge many things about a culture.
D.However, the center of their town is ironically the older parts of the city.
E.Architecture is not always defined as large but simply a home sometimes.
F.Tradition and religion are the largest pieces to the Chinese culture and architecture.
G.Each culture is unique and the more we learn about them, the more we appreciate our surroundings.

Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago. 11
The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sickness. 12 So they are called “disease of civilization”. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.
Scientists noticed that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. 13 However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.
Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy product, and they made very little use of grains.
14 We eat six times more salt than our ancestors(祖先). We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.
15 But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way as our ancestors did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.
A.These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.
B.People today probably don’t want to live the way people thousands of years ago did.
C.Ancient people also lived in large groups.
D.But today, we eat a lot of these.
E.Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise.
F.In that case, they would live much healthier.
G.People today probably live the same life as people thousands of years ago did.
Technology is here to stay. 16 . However, they are often unsure on how to help children use technology responsibly and keep a balance between online and offline time. Here are some tips.
Have a device contract
Having a device usage contract allows parents and children to work through what responsible technology usage looks like in your family and ensure that everyone is aware. 17 . Kids are more likely to make sense of the reasons you have for restriction.
18
Although this tip seems like common sense, it is often difficult due to the demand of work and the expectation of being constantly connected. By ensuring you build offline time into your own day and communicate that with your children, they will see the value and benefits. Whether you are reading a book or just taking a walk, letting your children be aware of your offline actions will encourage them to do the same!
Encourage non-tech activities
One great way to keep kids off their screens is to ensure that they have other activities to fill their time. 19 . These activities are also great ways to help children to develop their social skills and confidence.
Tech-free family time
Once a week, pencil-in a “tech-free family time” in your schedule. It can be a meal or trip. To help increase the success of outings, try designing special activities, i. e., going to the beach to build a sand castle that looks the same as a photo you have found online. 20
A.Model good technology use
B.Communicate with children
C.A little extra planning goes a long way
D.The contract is helpful to the settlement of conflicts
E.Parents are seeing more technology in their homes and jobs
F.Also, drafting the contract together promotes understanding
G.This can come in a variety of forms: soccer, fencing and more
The goal of homework is to help students remember and understand what they learned in school that day. It can also help teach them independence and time-management and planning skills, which are keys to success in the real world. 21 Here are some successful habits of how to do a good job of homework.
Set the stage.
Your children need a quiet spot to do their homework. This should be the same place every day, whether it is at the kitchen table or at their desk in their room. 22 You can take the time to work on a quiet task of your own, whether it’s paying bills, reading the newspaper, or planning the next day.
Time it right.
Homework for young children should be done when your children get home from school, because the information is still fresh in their minds and they have enough energy. Have your kids eat some snacks and talk about their day with you. Then have them start their homework. 23
It’s not your homework: it’s theirs.
You need to be involved in homework to see what your children are learning and how well they know what they need to know. 24 But guide them if they are struggling. You want them to get the feeling of pride and accomplishment on their own.
25
Let your children know how grown up it is for them to have homework and how proud you are of them. Try to instill (灌输) into them that it is “fun” to be able to do the assigned tasks. Let them show you their work, praise them for finishing their homework, and always do it with a smile.
A.Be hopeful and confident.
B.Get excited and be positive.
C.Be nearby while they do their homework.
D.Be sure not to do the homework for your children.
E.That means the television is shut off, even for you.
F.A small amount of homework also has a great influence on students.
G.Arrange other activities for later in the day so kids can get their homework done first.
If you travel to nearly any Chinese city in the summertime, you will see people, mostly men wearing T-shirts, sitting out on the sidewalks on low chairs in the shade, playing a game with large round disks of wood. 26 Xiangqi dates back as early as the Warring States period. While experts have different opinions as to who created Xiangqi and how it is linked to Western chess, there is no doubt that by the Tang Dynasty Xiangqi was a popular game in China. 27 And in the 20th century both Sun Yat-sen and Zhou Enlai were big fans of the game.
And, though it may look quite a bit different than Western chess, Xiangqi is actually quite similar in what the pieces can do and how the game is played. Like Western chess, the object of the game is to capture the other player’s “king”. 28
Unlike Western chess, instead of placing the pieces in squares, the pieces are placed on the intersections of lines. Another big difference between Western chess and Xiangqi is that there is a large empty space in the middle of the board, which the elephants cannot cross. 29 This space refers to an area in China where Liu Bang and Xiang Yu had a life-or-death war. The war was so influential that “the Chu River and the Han Boundary” has become a metaphor(隐喻)referring to any boundary between two opposing armies. When the Chinese people today see this name on the board, the battle scenes come to their mind, as though they are surrounded by thick smoke, able to hear the beating of war drums. 30
A.Actually, in Xiangqi he is just a general.
B.During the Qing Dynasty its popularity grew.
C.It is called “the Chu River and the Han Boundary”.
D.The game is called Xiangqi, a game of ordinary people.
E.There are many differences between Xiangqi and Western chess.

Hand gestures are a very useful communication tool because they are easy to learn and simple to perform 31 . Many hand gestures have been around for a very long time, though their meanings may have changed over the years. Here are the histories of three of our most commonly used hand signs.
Thumbs-up
Is there a more well-known sign of approval than the thumbs-up 32 . When one gladiator (角斗士) beat another, he would look to the crowd for their opinion: Should the loser be allowed to live The crowd would respond by turning their thumbs up if they wanted the man to be saved or down if they wanted him to be killed —at least, that’s what people used to think. 33 What would an ancient Roman think if he saw the number of thumbs-up we give each other today
V Sign
34 . Captured English archers (弓箭手) would have their first two fingers cut off so they could no longer fight. Uncaptured archers would therefore raise these two fingers to the enemy to show them that they could— and would— still draw their bows. Centuries later, the sign was employed by those who were fighting against the Nazis to represent “V for Victory,” and later to mean “peace” by American activists in the 1960s. During this time, people in Japan also started using the V sign in photos.
High Five
On October 2, 1977, after Dusty Baker hit a home run, L.A Dodgers baseball player Glenn Burke raised his hand to greet his teammate. 35 From then on, they would often give high fives during their games, and the gesture caught on.
A.Not all hand gestures are about communication.

Discoveries in Greenland indicate that Vikings ( 维 京 人) lived there for hundreds of years, trading with the European continent before they disappeared. 51 In 980 C.E., Erik the Red headed farther west when he was driven away from Iceland for some reason. He set sail for land that was visible west of Iceland. Three years later, he returned to Iceland and convinced hundreds of others to join him in settling in this new country. Some 25 boats set out for what Erik the Red had called Greenland. 52
Settling in Greenland posed an enormous challenge. Shelter, food, and clothing were, of course, essential to survival. There were no trees large enough to produce wood for housing. These settlers had to build homes of driftwood, stone, and sod (草皮). The summer was too short to grow grain crops, so they farmed domesticated animals imported from Europe and mainly relied on secondary products, such as milk and cheese. 53 The settlers usually wore clothes made of the fur of wild animals.
At some point during the fourteenth century, Greenland’s climate grew colder. Glaciers (冰川) began moving slowly over the land, bringing with them a runoff of sand, mud, and stones. These things slowly robbed the settlers of valuable grassland. 54 Recent evidence shows that their diet shifted from land-based food to sea products. Like their relatives in Norway, the Vikings in Greenland tried to take advantage of the sea. Soon, the percentage of their food taken from the sea had risen to 80 percent.
55 According to Danish archaeologist (考古学家) Jette Arneborg, they struggled to adapt to the increasingly difficult conditions. As the weather worsened, they may have abandoned their settlements and returned to Iceland.

Interesting Space Facts
As time goes by, technological advancements have made us learn more facts about space in the past century than in all time before that. We’ve already searched the universe for the most amazing space facts, including facts about the planets in our solar system, moons, the Milky Way and beyond! 61
The highest mountain discovered is the Olympus Mons, which is located on Mars. It is 16 miles high, making it nearly 3 times higher than Mount Everest. 62 That’s the size of Arizona !

Footprints left on the moon won’t disappear as there is no wind. But wait a minute.
64 Well, it actually wasn’t blowing. That blowing you see is because of a telescopic horizontal rod (望远镜水平杆) that the astronauts were struggling to remove from the flag’s top.
65 This is due to the lack of gravity in space causing the vertebrae (椎骨) to expand a little. However, this extra height is lost when they re-enter the earth’s atmosphere and are affected by the earth’s gravity again.

September 23 marks the start of a new season. 71 In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn interchangeably when referring to this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. 72
According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern name that followed the more traditional autumn. The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years, with the term fall being used even a bit earlier.
73 The word is of Germanic origin and meant “picking” or “collecting”, a nod to the act of gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began referring to the season separating the hot and cold months as either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf, or fall and spring for short. 74 By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American colonists (殖民者) were voyaging to North America. 75 While the former fell out of fashion overseas, it established itself in the local vocabulary by the time America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a unique American behavior.
