One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more method for her to help solve my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the Children’s Room. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It was a picture of a beagle (小猎犬) which looked just like my dog. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer. But one morning, he was gone. He was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under a tree I sat. I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story. It’s about a dog like mine who had been separated from his family. It seemed that Amos was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, he finally found his way back home. The final scene of reunion continued on and on, until my own lost dog and I were running together again in my mind.
My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a whole book, and I loved reading that book.
Though I never told my mother about my mysterious experience that summer, she saw a slow but great improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. Years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and wrote his own books, articles, poetry and fiction.

When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cell phones
Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it,” he says. “If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground, and it becomes a big problem.”
Cell phones contain some harmful materials, like lead and cadmium (镉). They can harm the environment, wildlife, and even humans. If your phone goes to a landfill, these harmful materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we need for drinking or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year. That results in a lot of landfill and produces a lot of harmful materials.
“At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again,” explains Mike. “We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel (镍) and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts.” Mike says, “Recycling your old phone is easy. You can usually just take it into a cell phone shop and they’ll send it to us.”
So, before you throw that old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone shop near you and give them your old phone.
38.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To show the importance of cell phones. B.To explain how harmful cell phones can be.
C.To introduce a cell phone recycling company. D.To suggest a way to deal with the old phones.
39.According to the passage, what happens to the old cell phone if someone throws it away
A.It will be recycled and become something useful again.
B.It may cause a serious problem of water pollution.
C.It will be sold to another customer in the shop.
D.It may be made into some harmful materials.
40.Which of the following new products can NOT be made from the old cell phones
A.Steel. B.A new battery. C.A plastic case. D.A plastic fence post.
41.In which column of a newspaper can we probably find this passage
A.Green Life. B.Sports. C.Fashion. D.Culture Focus.

When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.
This modern solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Co., the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China’s royal palace from 1420 to 1911.
“It’s important to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 a.m. to have a look. The museum ended up preparing fast food to serve the hungry visitors. “I don’t want that scenario to happen again”, Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.”
The new system will also make use of the closed-cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum’s precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures ” Shan said. “After adopting the Internet of Things, we can instantly (立即) detect any motion involving the relics to prevent such threats.”
The 5G network also will be used to improve remote meeting through webcams, which will discuss with scholars to jointly find the best answers for repair and store issues.
42.What do we know about the Palace Museum
A.Its visitors won’t have to queue up for the bathroom.
B.It has served as China’s royal palace for over 500 years.
C.It will cooperate with Huawei to promote its management.
D.It will set up advanced television cameras only for the purpose of safety.
43.What are the figures (数字) in Paragraph 4 intended to show about the Palace Museum
A.It is better than any other museums. B.It has a rich collection of cultural relics.
C.It enjoys great popularity all over the world. D.If faces a tough challenge of protecting relics.

七、书面表达 (满分25分)
Be a strong Chinese teenager
A strong China needs strong teenagers. It’s our duty to improve ourselves. I think we have lots of things to do.
First, we should learn to be honest and thankful. We are supposed to be friendly to others and behave politely in public.
Second, we should take interest in our study and we must work hard. At the same time, we should have good study methods, such as listening carefully in class, going over what we have learnt in time.
Third, it’s helpful to be in good health. We’d better have enough healthy food instead of junk food. And we should spend at least an hour doing sports every day.
Last but not least, we can spend our weekends doing some voluntary work at our community center or in the old People’s Home. It’s meaningful for us to do something for others.
If we follow these, we will be strong enough to realize our dreams.
