People can get all kinds of feelings hearing music. Music can make you march or dance; it can make you feel happy or sad. More than other arts, music can affect your moods and feelings. This is why music is so popular.
Every country has its own kind of music. In France many people like dance-music played on the accordion(手风琴),and many Americans enjoy banjo music. Spain is famous for its guitar music and India for the twanging sound of the sitar.
Many people like music in their own national style. But there are also people who enjoy classical music and pop music, which has spread throughout the world with the help of the record-player and radio.
However, there are still great differences between the music of the west and that of the east. Many of the instruments are very different. The guitar and sitar are both instruments in which strings are plucked by fingers, but they do not sound alike.

Most people want to know how things are made. They honestly admit, however, that they hardly know a thing when it comes to understanding how a piece of music is made. Where a composer (作曲家) begins, how he manages to keep going—in fact, how and where he learns his trade—all are covered in complete darkness. The composer, in short, is a man of mystery (神秘).
One of the first things the common man wants to know about is the part inspiration (灵感) plays in a composer's work. He finds it difficult to believe that composers are not much interested in that question.Writing music is as natural for the composer as eating or sleeping for all. Music is something that the composer happens to have been born for.
The composer, therefore, does not say to himself: “Do I feel inspired?” He says to himself: “Do I feel like working today?” And if he feels like working, he does. It is more or less like saying to himself: “Do I feel sleepy?” If you feel sleepy, you go to sleep. If you don't feel sleepy, you stay up. If the composer doesn't feel like working, he doesn't work. It's as simple as that.

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life stories and sounds the way people really talk; as life becomes more complicated(复杂的)it is good to hear music about ordinary people.
Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two lands of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars.
At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor Southerners is now popular all over the world.

Unit 5 Section Ⅳ
For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.
As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation.“I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.
Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn't involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can't see certain colors.
Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain.“When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks, I'm amusic,’”says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”
1.Which of the following is TRUE of amusics?
A.Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.
B.They love places where they are likely to hear music.
C.They can easily tell two different songs apart.
D.Their situation is well understood by musicians.
答案:A 根据第一段:“For some people, music is no fun at all”可知,A项正确,意为,“对于某些人来说,听音乐并不是开心的事情”和A项的听音乐对他们来说远非是愉快的相同。 根据第一段的“People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs.”
2.According to paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who ________.
A.dislikes listening to speeches B.can hear anything nonmusical
C.has a hearing problem D.lacks a complex hearing system
3.In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that ________.
A.her problem with music had been diagnosed earlier
B.she were seventeen years old rather than seventy
C.her problem could be easily explained
D.she were able to meet other amusics
答案:A I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy. 从最后一段我们知道,their condition is finally diagnosed(诊断).
4.What is the passage mainly concerned with?
A.Amusics' strange behaviours.
B.Some people's inability to enjoy music.
C.Musical talent and brain structure.
D.Identification and treatment of amusics.
Some people's inability to enjoy music. C项Musical talent and brain structure.

W: Plastic bags are popular with consumers and retailers as they are a functional, lightweight, strong, cheap, and practical way to transport food and other products.
Plastic bags are made from oil and gas. Oil and gas are non-renewable resources. Once they are used, these resources are lost to us. In China, 2 billion plastic bags are used every day. This is a huge problem because they last from 20 to 1,000 years in the environment. Often plastic bags float easily in the air and water. They can travel long distances. They can find their way to rivers, parks and even oceans. They also are dangerous to animals. Every year, more than one million seabirds are killed worldwide. To protect our limited resources and our environment, we should take measures to change the present situation.

Music is an international language. The songs that are sung or played by instruments are beautiful to all people everywhere.
Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the streets.
Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, politics, and activities of the American people. Most of the radio broadcast is music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in every state. Once the popular singer is heard throughout the country, young people buy his or her tapes. Some of the money from these tapes comes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching. Today, any music about country life and the love between a country boy and his girl is called western or country music.
Serious music for the concert halls is called classical music. Music for instruments is called orchestral music, such as the symphonies of Beethoven. There is opera for singers. There is ballet for dancers like the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai in China.

It all starts with a tree. In fact, it starts with several trees. Since the first modern guitars were made in northern Spain over 150 years ago, craftspeople have known the wood to be used is important in making a guitar.
Every guitar is made of several different kinds of wood. Each piece is carefully chosen and then cut to fit the part of the guitar for which it is designed. The most important part of a guitar is the soundboard—the piece of wood with a large hole that lies under the strings (弦,线). Guitar makers are careful to make the soundboard just the right shape and thickness. Then they fix stripes (长条) of wood across the inside in a special pattern, which helps strengthen the soundboard and improves the tone of the guitar.
Wood for the curvy bent sides of the guitar must be soaked in water and bent over a hot iron pipe. When all the pieces of the guitar are ready, they are carefully stuck together with glue. Special woodworking tools are used to shape and smooth the neck of the guitar. The craftspeople must make sure that the neck is perfectly centered over the soundboard.
Then it is time to use varnish(亮光漆). This brings out the beauty of the wood. Varnish also improves the sound of the guitar but too much varnish makes the guitar sound flat and dull.
Finally guitar strings are attached and tightened to make just the right musical tones. Then it's time to play a song.

Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to the other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or to eat a meal without listening to music.
To begin with, “muzak” (音乐广播网)was intended simply to create a soothing (抚慰的)atmosphere. Recently, however, it's becoming a big business—thanks in part to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman, an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost(增进;改善) sales or increase factory production by as much as one third.
But it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts (收据;收条) by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy.Yet, slow music isn't always answered. Dr. Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play up-tempo music to keep the customers moving—unless, of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints!

To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests, be so exciting or dramatic? I'm not sure about it.
Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning—the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life too—in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said, “Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”

D.think music would be less exciting than films
35.What does the underlined word “melody” mean in the text?
A.flying B.looking
C.singing D.living

Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in his or her life, he or she might write in his or her diary. Now a teenager with the same problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog. In many ways, a diary and a blog are almost the same. So, what makes a blog different from a diary?
__36__ Usually, a teenager treats his or her diary like a book full of secrets. Both diaries and blogs tell what happened to the writer that day.
I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her blog. She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry exam. __37__ Then, after I finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was worried that my sister might read it!
Because a blog is such a public way of writing, it has both good and bad points. __38__ If I am angry with a friend during school and write something bad about her in my diary, she will never know. However, if my sister writes something bad about a friend, that friend may read her blog and get angry. __39__
A blog has good points, of course. __40__ People choose to write in blogs because they know that their friends will read what they write. If I am feeling sad one day and write in my diary, “Nobody cares about me,” no one will know about it. However, if my sister writes the same words in her blog, her best friends will quickly reply and tell her how much they like her.
If People are careful about what they write, blogs are a very good way to write about everyday life. However, I still prefer my old diary!
A.So we have to be very careful of what we write.
B.When I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but only in my diary.
C.The biggest problem with a blog is that anyone can read what you write.
D.The biggest difference is that a blog is much more public than a diary.
E.Everyone intends to keep his own secret.
F.Blogs help people stay in contact with their friends and hear what the people around them are doing.

Dear_Jim,
How_are_things_going?
On November 21st, 2008 I went to a concert held in the Capital Stadium. The concert was given by Emil Chau, a singer from Taiwan. Chau was born in Hongkong in December, 1960 and showed his music talent at an early age. His first album came out in 1984. Since then he has made many albums and has continued giving great performances on stage at home and abroad. His song “Friend” became well-known to each household.
Throughout the concert, there was not an empty seat anywhere in the Stadium, and the atmosphere was extremely exciting. The audience sang along to nearly every song.
I was greatly impressed by Chau's brilliant music and singing. While I watched and listened I knew that I was seeing the performance of a real superstar. This is the best concert that I will remember forever.
