Chinatown, lying in Downtown L.A. near the city's cultural center, is one of L.A.'s most popular tourist destinations.
I had been heading to Chinatown for about 6 years to hang out until 2012, when I became a member of the neighborhood. After moving in, I started to explore every corner of this amazing place.
A MECCA FOR FOOD
In Chinatown, a mix of new and old restaurants meets everyone's needs. You can find dim sum at Ocean Seafood and tasty banh mi at Golden Lake Eatery. The cuisine in Chinatown goes beyond Asian food. People are still lining up for fried chicken at Howlin' Ray' s.
Early birds should stop by Philippe The Original, a local restaurant that's beloved for French Dip sandwiches, but also serves a good classic American breakfast. Night owls will want to head to Full House Seafood on Hill Street, which is open late into the night.
CHINESE AMERICAN MUSEUM
Food is far from the only reason to visit Chinatown. People interested in history will want to start their trip at the Chinese American Museum (CAM), lying just outside of Chinatown at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument. The museum is housed in the Garnier Building, the oldest surviving Chinese building in a major area of California.
CENTRAL PLAZA
A big statue(雕塑)of Bruce Lee has become a must-photograph site in Chinatown's Central Plaza. The late martial arts (武术)star once had a studio in Chinatown at 628 W. College St.
Nearby is Dragon Chasing Pearl, which was originally painted on the wall in 1941 by Tyrus Wong. The artist, who passed away in December 2016 at age 106, was famous for his work in films, particularly as the lead artist on Disney's Bambi.
FESTIVALS
Chinatown hosts many party-style events throughout the year, like the music and food truck Chinatown Summer Nights, the yearly Moon Festival and the biggest one, Lunar New Year! It's really a good place to
experience L.A.’s cultural diversity(多样性).
1. Which of the following serves both French and American food early in the morning
A. Ocean Seafood.
B. Golden Lake Eatery.
C. Full House Seafood.
D. Philippe The Original.
2. What can we learn about the CAM
A. It has big attraction for history-lovers.
B. It stands near the famous Garnier Building.
C. It is situated in the center of Chinatown.
D. It is the oldest museum in California.
3. What can people do in Chinatown's Central Plaza
A. Watch Disney films like Bambi.
B. Take pictures with martial arts stars.
C. Admite Tyrus Wong' s well-known artwork.
D. Visit Bruce Lee's house at 628 W. College St.

Imagine being told that you will never walk again! That was what doctors told the world-famous gymnast (体操运动员)Kieran Behan after they removed a cancerous tumor (肿 瘤)from his leg when he was only ten years old. The operation went so badly that he woke up crying in terrible pain. Up to then, he had been crazy about gymnastics and was determined to become an Olympic champion. But how could he do that when he could not even walk now and was sitting in a wheelchair
Kieran was going to show them and he started on the long road to recovery. He was 15 months in a wheelchair but he kept on exercising and was back in the gym. But within a few months he fell from the high bar and suffered a serious head injury, which caused frequent blackouts. Thus, he missed a whole year at school but the gym was beckoning (召唤)again. This time though, he had to overcome the challenges of that awful injury and getting back his balance. He returned to school using a walking stick but was cruelly laughed at by his classmates.
It took him three years to get back to where he had been before he injured his head. But unfortunately, he then suffered more injuries. Even just after he had been chosen for the European Championships, his knee was broken. Behan has said that was when he was about to give up.
But he never gave up and finally succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup floor champion in 2011, and his greatest moment of honor was when he attended the London 2012 Olympics. He had become an Olympic athlete after being through such sufferings. He is really a glorious example of the Olympic spirit.
4. What can we infer about Kieran Behan in the first paragraph
A. He was a famous gymnast when he was ten.
B. He was unable to walk after the operation.
C. He lost one leg because of the operation.
D. He decided to give up gymnastics.
5. How long did it take Kieran to stand up again after the cancer operation
A. A few months. B. Fifteen months.
C. One year. D. Three years.
6. What happened after Kieran was chosen for the European Championships
A. He totally lost heart. B. He hurt his head.
C. He broke his knee. D. He was laughed at by others.
7. Which words best describe Kieran Behan
A. Unfortunate but smart B. Talented but weak.
C. Curious and positive. D. Brave and determined.

Did your mother ever say you'll feel better after a good cry It turns out Mom is right as usual-crying really is healthy. What's more, letting yourself feel blue and accepting those feelings will help you feel better in the long run, according to a new research.
In three separate studies both online and in a lab, researchers at UC Berkeley evaluated the responses from 1,300 adults regarding their psychological(心理的)health and emotional well-being(幸福感).In one study,1,000 participants filled out a survey evaluating how they felt about the statement, “I tell myself I shouldn't be feeling the way that I'm feeling." Those who agreed with the statement scored lower on tests of well-being. In other words, letting yourself feel bad is better for your mind and mood than trying to control negative thoughts.
“We found that people who habitually accept their negative emotions experience fewer negative emotions, which adds to better psychological health," said study senior author Iris Mauss, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley in an article on the university's website.
In a society where the importance to be happy is emphasized daily on the other social media platforms, letting yourself be down in the dumps can be tough. Just remember that true happiness isn't always what people say it is.
“It turns out that how we approach our own negative emotional reactions is really important for our well-being," said study lead author Brett Ford, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. “People who accept these emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to deal with their stress more successfully."
So next time someone tells you to “turn that frown upside down”, ignore them. Embrace your inner feelings for a while.
8. How did the researchers carry out one of the studies
A. They gave the participants different tests.
B. They compared their own thoughts with others.
C. They studied the participants' everyday experiences.
D. They compared the participants' thoughts and their feelings.
9. What does the underlined part “be down in the dumps" in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Be lonely.
B. Be depressed.
C. Be positive.
D. Be comfortable.
10.What did Brett Ford try to show in Paragraph 5
A. It is better for people to accept negative emotions.
B.We should never try to change others' thoughts.
C.People who accept themselves are happier.
D.Positive people tend to be less stressed.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Turn your frown upside down
B. Crying is good for our health
C. Stop having bad feelings
D. Stop feeling the way that you’re feeling
D
Chet Wisniewski walked into a Fry's Electronics store in Las Vegas and looked through the shelves, taking some smart light bulbs and other connected devices as he went.
A research scientist, Wisniewski wanted to do research and find out whether the off-the-shelf device had major safety vulnerability (漏洞). A few days later, he had a whole collection of hacked (非法侵入的) smart devices. "I didn't even need to do any firmware hacking. It was easier than that," he said. "Things I thought would take me a week took, like, an hour."
Six years later, things aren't much better, but our use of connected home products has increased a lot. More than 77 percent of households with a Wi-Fi network reported owning at least one smart home device in 2021, compared with 65 percent just one year earlier, according to research firm IDC. But some smart home devices could have vulnerable software, and shoppers have no way of knowing. Once inside your house, those products become a secret passage into your home.
The influence of a hacked smart home device could be too small to notice. Does anyone really care if a hacker turns off a light bulb or changes the temperature on a tea kettle But real problems arise when hackers use many smart devices together. Imagine this: a hacker uses your smart light bulb to connect to your smart speakers and says "Unlock the front door."
However, realistically understanding the risks related to smart home devices does not have to mean one must keep away from them altogether. Smart home technologies are here to stay. We love them for their convenience and of course their novelty(新奇). Yet we as customers must be very careful when we bring them into our homes and make sure that the privacy and the safety of our loved ones are protected
12. Why did Chet Wisniewski buy so many smart home devices
A. To live a smart life.
B. To study how they worked.
C. To check if they were safe to use.
D. To compare which ones worked better.
13. What did IDC find
A. Most families are able to use a Wi-Fi network nowadays.
B. About 65% of families used smart home devices in 2020.
C. Some smart home devices come with vulnerable software.
D. Over 77% of families with Wi-Fi had smart home devices in 2021.
14. What did the author want to show by imagining the situation in paragraph 4
A. Smart speakers need to be made smarter.
B. Hackers can easily control one's smart light bulbs.
C. Using too many smart devices at home is dangerous.
D. Risks of using smart devices lie in their connecting with each other.
15. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows
A. Advantages of smart home devices.
B. Risks coming with smart home devices.
C. Safety tips for using smart home devices.
D. Ways that smart home devices can be improved.

One Good Deed Deserves Another
When I was young,I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber,a tailor, a coffee shop owner,a grocer(食品杂货商), and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr.Lim,the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children--six to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged(破旧的)clothes and looked malnourished(营养不良的).My family was relatively better off so my parents would take over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with just two meals a day, so we stopped giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family, despite the protests from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell did not last long, and the children started to get our three meals a day again.
As time went by,the number of customers using Lim's shop increased rapidly, which was delightful. Business took off like a rocket because Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. The Lim family was much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father's health started to get worse. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. He paid less attention to his shop and business got worse. My father had to sell our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.
