Jan or Johan Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque painter from the “Golden Age of Dutch Painting”. He was obscure during his lifetime; but in the nineteenth century, his work was brought to light, and he is now regarded as one of the greatest figures of Baroque painting—with his focus on simple portraits and household scenes. He is admired for the ability to present everyday objects with great dignity (庄重) and light.
There is not much information about Jan Vermeer's early life. He didn't travel much outside Holland, and most of his paintings were bought by a local man. His father was a dealer of paintings and also a local inn owner. When his father died in 1652, Jan took over the business of selling pictures and ownership of a small inn. When his mother died in 1670, he also inherited her local restaurant, and he often worked there at night selling alcohol and dishes to customers.
In 1653, Jan married a young girl named Catherina Bolies. Together they had fourteen children, though four died soon. Jan did a significant portion of his painting within his large house. He liked to paint in his own studio, even though household life may have been noisy with 14 children and his mother in law, whom he often argued with.
Jan was a slow worker, producing only three paintings a year. This was partly due to his technique of granular (似颗粒状的) painting. He was careful in capturing the light and colour of his various subjects. Unusually for the time, Jan often focused on simple household scenes such as “The Milkmaid” or the “Music Lesson”.
An important aspect of Vermeer's paintings were his portraits—often of women. The portraits capture a style of reassuring calm, dignity and contentment with everyday life. To Vermeer, they may have represented an idealized view of life and women, which did not always match reality.TheGirlwithaPearlEarring is widely considered a Vermeer masterpiece. It is also regarded as one of the greatest portrait pictures ever painted and is sometimes referred to as the MonaLisa of the North.
24.What does the underlined word “obscure” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Not clear. B.Quite poor. C.Not well known. D.Rather confusing.

A.A local inn. B.A restaurant.
C.Several paintings. D.A job of selling wines.
26.Which of the following may become a subject of his painting
A.Hills around his town. B.Children in the school.
C.A boat on the foggy sea. D.A young woman in his house.
27.What is the passage
A.A novel about a painter. B.A biography of a person.
C.An analysis of painting styles. D.A review of Vermeer's painting.

In a street largely unchanged since it was built in the 1800s, Hobart's Battery Point is probably the last place you would expect to find a farm.
In one corner of Peter Handy's backyard is a controlled environment unit that houses vertical pastures (垂直牧场), the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere (半球). Mr. Handy is changing the definition of what it means to be a farmer. “I know it's really funny, because when people say to me, ‘Where's your farm?’, I'll say ‘it's in Battery Point’ and they're like, ‘No, there's no farms in Battery Point’,” he said “People think the Martians have landed because we've got this massive, big pink light that comes out of it from the bottom but other than that, they'd have no idea.”
Not just a backyard project, Mr. Handy is running a business. “It's here because I need to be as close to my customers, the chefs and restaurants of Hobart,” he said. “I aim to use the least amount of food miles as possible and make this a super efficient business.”
Using LED lights and hydroponic nutrients, the farm grows leafy greens, root vegetables and flowering plants. “I don't have to worry about floods, wind, wild animals, electric fences, turning the soil over,”Mr .Handy said. Using 95 percent less water than traditional farming, the farm ticks the box environmentally. “I mean, this is definitely not the answer to food sustainability in the world. But it's definitely a part of it.”
Science writer Julian Cribb believes a world food crisis is coming, due to a combination of loss of water, loss of topsoil, climate change and overuse of poisons. “We're going to need to change the nature of the way we produce food and change the human diet at the same time,” he said, “and new urban farming methods would see most of the world's great cities feeding themselves.”
Mr. Cribb said Australia was still quite a way off from adopting urban farming. But he believes that it poses a rather unique opportunity for Australian farmers to sell their expertise to cities, teaching people to grow food in urban environments.
28.What might people think of Mr. Handy's farm
A.Scared. B.Impressed. C.Disappointed. D.Confused.
29.What does Mr. Handy say about his farm
A.It is not affected by weather. B.It mainly plants and sells flowers.
C.It serves customers from near and far. D.It is the solution to food sustainability.
30.What's the purpose of Mr. Cribb's words in Paragraph 5
A.To praise his contribution to science.
B.To explain how urban farming works.
C.To stress the necessity of urban farming.
D.To present the seriousness of the food crisis.
31.What's the passage mainly about
A.Cities are struggling to get food.
B.Technology is changing people's life.
C.Peter Handy is a successful businessman.
D.Food production is being moved into cities.

Recently, there have been huge advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs that create art. The programs, which create artworks based on short descriptions, have amazed many people. They have also raised difficult questions.
In April, reported on Dall E 2, a tool from OpenAI. Dall E 2 uses AI to create incredible paintings, photos, and other artworks in many different styles based on simple descriptions. Since then, OpenAI has changed its rules to allow anyone to sign up and use the tool. But it's still putting strong controls on the art that can be created.
But now there are several other AI tools that work in similar ways. These new tools are free or cheap, and don't have some of Dall E 2's limits.Midjourney is a website that allows users to create images from short descriptions. Stable Diffusion is similar, but users can also run the program on their own computers.
The new tools are entertaining and powerful. They allow people to quickly see almost any idea they can imagine, even if they aren't artists. For some creative workers, like those at companies that create ads or images, the tools allow them to quickly explore new ideas.
Many artists are upset that they're now competing against computers for attention, prizes—and jobs. It's hard for a single artist to compete against all the art and photography that have ever appeared on the Internet. In August, Jason Allen won first place at the Colorado State Fair with his picture Thé treD'opéraSpatial, which he created with Midjourney. That upset many people.
The images and the descriptions used to train these AI programs were taken from the Internet. The training images were used without permission, which has raised questions about whether what these tools are doing is fair or legal.
The creators of the training pictures haven't given permission for their images to be used, but their skills and talents are a huge part of what makes the new tools so successful. Some artists' groups say artists should get to decide if their work can be used by these tools.
32.What should you do to create artworks with Dall E 2 or Midjourney
A.Write a short article. B.Upload some photos.
C.Draw simple pictures. D.Offer brief descriptions.
33.How do many artists react to the new AI tools
A.They welcome them warmly. B.They accept them unwillingly.
C.They are concerned about them. D.They are dissatisfied with them.
34.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A.Jason Allen's winning the prize. B.Jason Allen's using Midjourney.
C.Jason Allen's creating a picture. D.Jason Allen's attracting attention.
35.In which column of a website are we likely to read this passage
A.Business. B.Lifestyle. C. Science. D.Education.

Riya, an 8 year old pupil, lived happily in a big city with her parents, who loved Riya dearly and did what they could to buy what she wanted for her. Riya was smart and excellent in her studies. Not only that, she was always ready to help others.
One day when Riya entered her classroom, she saw a crowd admiring Riya's friend Mary's new pen and talking cheerfully. Riya fell in love with that pen at first glance and desired to get Mary's permission to let her use it. Seconds later, the school bell rang, sending the children hurrying to the school grounds for morning prayers.
After a while, their teacher Grace let Riya fetch some chalk from the classroom, in which Riya once again saw Mary's delicate pen, lying on the desk elegantly. Riya took it fondly and went to her desk, ready to write on her book with the lovely pen when she heard the sound of someone walking by. Without thinking, she put the pen in her pocket and saw who it was. Jane, her other friend, was returning to the classroom. Riya immediately ran out from the back door noiselessly and went to the playground to pray.
The morning prayers finished, everyone went to class, followed by their teacher Grace. The moment Mary found her pen was missing, she got annoyed. Without delay, she ran to the front and complained to Grace, saying in tears, “Someone must have stolen my new pen.”
Having quietened the noisy class, Grace asked them who was in the classroom during the prayers. Almost everyone pointed at Jane, who explained she just felt uncomfortable when praying and came back to rest. Grace asked Jane if she had taken Mary's new pen, to which Jane said no firmly, insisting she knew nothing about that pen. But she had nobody to prove her words. Suspected and feeling sad,Jane burst out crying.
Everything happened fast and unexpectedly before Riya suddenly realized the pen was still in her pocket. She froze on the spot, afraid of being treated as a thief.

Text 10
After a year of preparing herself, Laura Dekker has been given permission to sail around the world. “I was so happy that I almost jumped into the water,” Laura said, after learning of the court's decision.
The 14 year old was born on a ship in the South Pacific, and currently lives with her father on a boat. When child protection agencies heard about her plan to sail alone, they took the case to court and prevented her from making such a dangerous voyage.
Since the decision, though, Laura had been preparing with her father to convince the court that she was ready. Later on, she received the books and other materials she would need for school while she was at sea. She added safety equipment to a new, big boat. And she took first aid courses to learn survival skills, like how to put out fires on the boat, take care of her own injuries and deal with lack of sleep. She also planned a safer course—adding alternate routes to avoid pirate attacks, and planning a course that would have her on dry land as she moved from port to port across the globe.
Even with all of the added preparations, the trip still has its risks. In early June, 16 year old Abby Sunderland, an American, had to give up her attempt to become the youngest sailor to travel around the world. The mask of her boat broke due to rough waters in the Indian Ocean, and she was rescued by a French fishing ship.
Laura plans to take longer than Abby for her voyage, and is using a larger and more stable boat. If she finishes successfully in less than two years, she will take the title from the current record holder Jessica Watson, of Australia, who was 16 when she completed the journey.

参考范文:
ButRiyaknewwhatwastherightthingtodo. Nervous and anxious as she was, Riya took courage to walk toward Jane, standing in front of her and saying in an apologetic voice, “Sorry, Jane, it was I that made you misunderstood by others.” Then, Riya turned around to tell Grace what was the truth and claimed that the misunderstanding was caused by her inconsideration. She apologized to Mary with head bowed and tears running down her cheeks, asking sincerely, “I am really sorry for using the new pen without your permission. But I did not do it on purpose.Could you please forgive me?” After her words, the air in the classroom seemed to be still like dead water.
GracenoddedandpattedRiyaonthebackwitharelievedsmile. She cleared her throat, uttering, “Riya, I am so touched by your honesty and courage. You are a good girl.” She also expressed her apology to Jane and comforted her. She told the whole class that making a mistake was not terrible and that the courage to admit it truly counted. Apparently, Riya set a good example for everyone else. Since it was a misunderstanding, Mary grinned understandingly at Riya and replied, “I forgive you and I'd like to share this new pen with you.” Hearing her words, Riya couldn't help hugging Mary. It was at that time that Riya came to realize what mattered most was not the mistake made by her but honesty and courage to take the blame for it.
