Some places can create strong memories. The following special places are important to Americans who look to the past, but also are thinking of the future.
New Orleans Streetcars
Many American cities once had streetcars, but not anymore. Yet streetcars have been running in New Orleans for over 150 years. The Saint Avenue streetcar is said to be the oldest continuously operating streetcar in the world. Many residents have been riding the streetcars ever since they started high school. Most of them think it's a piece of history. They have these old cars, and they respect them, and they keep them running.
Historic Houses
Historic homes can interest people seeking to connect with the former occupants. A typical one is a very simple, white house in Virginia. This small house in Winchester, Virginia, opened its doors to the public in August. It was home to the singer Pasty Cline, who died at the age of 30. Babe Ruth is considered one of the greatest baseball players in history. He was born in a house in Baltimore, Maryland. With his house visitors are given plenty of opportunities to touch where Babe Ruth walked around.
Havre de Grace
Years ago, Americans used decoys (假肢) to hunt ducks and other waterbirds. Those days are gone. But collecting artful decoys is now popular. Havre de Grace is a town in the American state of Maryland, one part of which is famous for its wildlife. Captain Jobes is one of the top decoy carvers in Havre de Grace. Hunters use decoys to get ducks and geese to come close enough to shoot. The wooden birds are so highly respected here that Havre de Grace calls itself the decoy capital of the world. It also has a museum with more than 1,000 decoys. Most were handmade.

Skyscrapers are the symbol of urban life and city people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments. Farms, on the other hand, are associated with rural life. However, there are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.
By the middle of this century, some scientists suggest, almost 80% of the earth's population could live in cities. In addition, the population could increase to 9.1 billion people during that time yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same. If current farming practices don't change, we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.
Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environmentally friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.
Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases. Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finally, vertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.
Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day, it wouldn't be enough. For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources, such as artificial light.
Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest. Experts agree that innovative farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer, but the best ideas could be yet to come.
28.What primary problem could vertical farming settle
A.Poor state of rural life. B.Shortage of food supply.
C.High costs for transporting crops. D.Environmental pollution.
29.What is the advantage of vertical farming
A.It can benefit transport industry. B.It requires little care.
C.It can produce organic food. D.It needs very low cost.
30.What is a big challenge to make vertical farming a reality
A.Farmable land. B.Light sources. C.Crop diseases. D.Climate conditions.
31.What can be the best title of the text
A.Future Food Needs B.Symbol of Urban Life
C.Farms of the Future D.Farming on Rooftops
D
With greater climate catastrophe (气候突变) on Earth, it is natural for us to make every effort to stop the potential floods, snowstorms, and alarming reports from scientists. For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packaging free products.
However, before you rejoice in “green” purchases, take a second to consider the results of a new study from Arizona University. By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reaffirmed a principle:Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. And that is true whether you are looking at the impact that your purchases have on the Earth or on your own happiness.
It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory yields requires some resources to produce. Take plastic bag bans for instance. If your city is getting rid of single use shopping bags, it can be tempting to pay for a fashionable organic cotton bag hanging in the check out line of your local supermarket. However, experts insist that growing cotton is actually no better for the Earth than producing the conventional plastic bags. Your best bet for carrying your groceries if you care about sustainability Any bag you already own. This is true of many kinds of “green” products.
It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study. “People believe that they might well be self satisfied about becoming environmentally conscious through green buying patterns, but it doesn't seem to be that way”, said the lead researcher Sabrina Helm. “Reduced consumption has effects on increased well being and decreased psychological distress, but we don't see that with green consumption.”
“Owning every new green product on the market might make you feel contented, but if you relieve yourself of that burden of ownership, most people report feeling a lot better,” said Helm.
32.Why does the writer mention green shopping habits
A.To call on a green lifestyle. B.To praise people's green efforts.
C.To introduce a social trend. D.To present a half true “green truth”.
33.What's the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The plastic bag bans are of no effect.
B.Using any bag you have is the best bet.
C.Reduced consumption is better for the Earth.
D.Growing cotton is actually far worse for the Earth.
34.What does the underlined “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The sense of achievement. B.The sense of happiness.
C.Psychological pressure. D.Environmental awareness.
35.What might be the best title for the text
A.Less is More B.The Greener, The Happier
C.Happiness Guarantee D.What Are Really Green Products

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There is no school equal to a decent (体面的) home and no teacher equal to a virtuous (道德高尚的) parent.
There are two typical examples:Edison's mother and our mother. As you all know, Thomas Edison is one of the most outstanding scientists and inventors in the world. Unbelievably, young Tom was in school for only three months. It is said that he liked to ask strange questions, many of which have nothing to do with learning. His teacher didn't understand why he had so many strange questions. He didn't want to teach Tom any more. He asked Tom's mother to take the boy home. Tom's mother taught him to read and write, and she found him to be a very good pupil. He learned very fast and became very interested in science. It was she who played an important role in Edison's growth. Although we can't compare with Edison, our mother played a more important role in our growth than his mother. Our dad was an English teacher who taught high school students. For many years, he had been cautious and conscientious (认真的) towards work. Mom stayed home and homeschooled their four children. Three of us had no trouble in learning but my sister Catherine still could not read by fifth grade, and worse still, did not even know the alphabet (字母表).
My mother did some research and found that Catherine had some sort of learning disability. She sent Catherine to a public school to get some help. Catherine made many friends at school and amazed everyone with her gift for telling creative stories in class, but she still couldn't master reading skills. After all the testing was done, the school had my parents come in. They were told that based on the test results, they should just take Catherine home, which was very similar to Edison's experience. However, the biggest difference is that Edison was not stupid, and my sister really had learning disabilities.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

A number of wonderful novels were published all over the country. Many of her major works were popular with the public and some books were translated into other languages. All of this was because of a wonderfully devoted mother who was absolutely the best teacher ever—for all four of us.
