In the late 1990s, a family visited the school where I taught deaf students. They said they would be moving here and planned to send their deaf daughter to my school as a first grader. They were upset that their child's kindergarten teacher told them not to have high hopes for her academically. Based upon assessment results, the teacher painted a bleak picture for their little girl's future. Standing behind them was Katherine, a beautiful five year old with long hair and dark eyes. The whole time her parents were there, and she didn't make a sound or use sign language, even when her parents prompted her.
After a few weeks with Katherine, I discovered I was dealing with a very bright, very strong willed child. Although I was able to engage her in a variety of learning activities, writing was a constant struggle. I tried all kinds of trickery to interest her in writing. Every time the pencils came out, she would shut down and refuse to write.
One day Katherine got off her bus and stood in front of the school weeping. The staff members present did not know enough sign language to ask her why she was crying. Finally they quickly took her into the office where they handed her a pen and a notepad. Katherine wrote: “PAC BAK.”. Immediately the office staff realized she left her backpack on the bus. They summoned (召唤) the bus back to school and soon Katherine was reunited with her backpack.
That day Katherine discovered the power of the pen. From then on she had a new appreciation for writing. She is a young woman now and has become an excellent writer, public speaker and student leader. In the summer of 2008 I traveled to the National Association of the Deaf Conference in New Orleans and watched her perform competitively as Miss Deaf Colorado. Kathy keeps in touch and I especially treasure her e mails with term papers attached. This young lady wields a very powerful pen!
24.Why was Katherine arranged to the author's school
A.Katherine likes various activities.
B.Her family settled in a new place.
C.The author is good at teaching deaf children.
D.Her parents were satisfied with Katherine's teacher.

A.She kept silent. B.She kept crying. C.She was studying. D.She was writing.
26.What does the underlined word “prompted” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Advised. B.Prevented. C.Convinced. D.Encouraged.
27.What does the author want to show by telling the story in Paragraph 3
A.How Katherine found her backpack. B.What a kind group the staff were.
C.Why Katherine could make a change. D.Where her backpack was found.

A study led by the University of Exeter asked parents how often their children engaged in play that was “thrilling and exciting”, where they might experience some fear and uncertainty.
The study comes at a time when children have less opportunity for adventurous play out of sight of adults, such as climbing trees, riding bikes, or jumping from high surfaces. The study sought to test theories that adventurous play offers learning opportunities that help build resilience (韧性) in children, therefore helping to prevent mental health problems.
Researchers surveyed two groups of parents of children aged five to eleven: a group of 427 parents in Northern Ireland and a nationally representative group of 1,919 parents in England, Wales and Scotland. Parents completed questions about their child's play, their general mental health (pre COVID) and their moods during the first COVID 19 lockdown.
Researchers found that children who spent more time playing outside had fewer “internalizing problems”, characterized as anxiety and depression, and were also positive during the first lockdown. The effects were relatively small, as would be expected given the range of factors that affect children's mental health. However, results were consistent even after researchers factored in a wide range of variables including child sex, age, parent employment status and parent mental health. The study in the larger group also found that the effect was more obvious in children from lower income families than those growing up in higher income households.
Belinda Kirk, an explorer, welcomed the findings on adventurous play. “It's a normal instinct to want to protect your children, which I have in bountiful amounts. But we live in a world that is so obsessed (痴迷的) with physical safety that we've forgotten to balance it with mental health. We've prioritized physical safety or physical health over mental health, so we're not letting kids fall down and learn to pick themselves up again, and therefore build up coping mechanisms and resilience,” she said.
Helen Dodd, Professor of Child Psychology at the University of Exeter, who led the study, said, “We're more concerned than ever about children's mental health, and our findings highlight that we might be able to protect children's mental health by ensuring they have plentiful opportunities for adventurous play. This is really positive because play is free, instinctive and rewarding for children, and doesn't require special skills. We now urgently need to invest in and protect natural spaces, well designed parks and adventure playgrounds to support the mental health of our children.”
28.What does the study focus on
A.The variety of adventurous activities.
B.Why children should engage more in outdoor play.
C.The relationship between adventurous play and mental health.
D.How to guarantee children's safety when they play outside.
29.What do we know about the study
A.The results of the two groups are different.
B.The participants are from all over the world.
C.It surveyed the children's mental states in period of time.
D.It found playing outside had greater effects on children than other factors.
30.Which statement would Belinda Kirk agree with
A.Adventurous play is not recommended to young children.
B.We often neglect to maintain children's mental health.
C.It's urgent to build children's resilience to stress.
D.Falling down may do great harm to children.
31.What are Helen Dodd's words mainly about
A.A suggestion for future studies.
B.A major limitation of the study.
C.An insight into the results of this study.
D.An accepted explanation for the research findings.

People__seldom__feel__neutral__about__poetry. Those who love it sometimes give the impression that it is an adequate substitute for food, shelter, and love.It isn't.Words, no matter how satisfying, are never an equivalent for life itself and its human experiences. Those who dislike poetry on principle sometimes claim, on the other hand, that poetry is only words and good for nothing. That's not true either. It is easy to become frustrated by words in poetry or in life—but when words represent and recreate genuine human feelings, as they often do in poetry, they can be very important.Poetry is an experience of words, and those who know how to read poetry can easily extend their experience of life, their sense of what other people are like, their awareness of themselves, and their range of human feelings.
One reason poetry can be so important is that it is so closely concerned with feelings.Poetry is often full of ideas, too, and sometimes poems can be powerful experiences of the mind, but most poems are primarily about how people feel rather than how people think.Poems provide, in fact, a language for feeling, and one of poetry's most outstanding values involves its attempt to express the inexpressible. How can anyone, for example, put into words what it means to be in love or what it feels like to lose someone one cares about?Poetry tries, and it often captures exactly the shade of emotion that feels just right to a reader. No single poem can be said to express all the things that love or death feels like, or means, but one of the joys of experiencing poetry occurs when we read a poem and want to say, “Yes, that is just what it is like. I know exactly what that line means but I've never been able to express it so well.” Poetry can be the voice of our feelings even when our minds are speechless with grief or joy.
32.What does the underlined sentence “People seldom feel neutral about poetry.” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Many people think that poetry is neutral.
B.People always differ in their views about poetry.
C.People rarely take a biased opinion about poetry.
D.People generally think of poetry as extremely important or totally useless.
33.What does the author suggest according to the passage
A.Poetry often captures real human feelings.
B.Poetry makes its readers sentimental (感性的).
C.Poetry is more important than words.
D.Poetry tends to make the reader disappointed.
34.What do people usually express through poetry
A.What love and death mean.
B.What people think about themselves.
C.What people feel but find it hard to describe.
D.How people go through life.
35.What's the passage mainly about
A.The structure of poetry.
B.The nature and importance of poetry.
C.The components of poetry.
D.The appreciation of poetry.

An indoor garden has a positive impact on your life if you take care of them properly. However, if you fail to plan before starting one on your own, you may end up with a few problems. __36__
Sun Conditions
Plants need an ample amount of sunlight for them to grow properly. __37__ Before starting an indoor garden, make sure you've conducted a few weeks' worth of observations about how sunlight behaves inside your home at different times of the day. This will give you an idea as to where your indoor garden is.
Space Availability
Obviously, the sun conditions would be useless if you don't have enough space for the garden. That said, consider where the sunlight lands. You must also determine whether you can place a garden there. __38__ Do it in such a way that you get to accommodate (考虑到) your plants sunlight needs while also maximizing the space of your home for other things.
Budget
You will spend a few dollars if you want to start an indoor garden. That's a fact. This shouldn't bother you, though. __39__ The money you spent on gardening essentials will return in the form of not having to buy certain things in the market because you have one at home. Before starting an indoor garden, consider the budget you want for the garden. This will determine the containers and types of plants you can cultivate.
The world will always present us with many problems that can affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally. One great method for achieving a healthy lifestyle is by growing a garden. __40__ Thanks to indoor gardening, you can have a slice of paradise in the city.
A.If not, you can try rearranging your home.
B.To avoid that, you need to consider a few things.
C.That means you should consider the availability of sunlight.
D.Without enough sunlight, all living things wouldn't survive.
E.Besides, you must consider how to shelter your garden in the sun.
F.That's because, in the long run, indoor gardens are actually money savers.
G.Living in the city is not a problem for people with green fingers anymore.

It was the last game of the season. Cali had been playing soccer all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players. As much as she tried, though, Cali still had not scored one single goal.
“Don't give up,” said her coach. He showed Cali and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Cali was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn't kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit soccer for good.
“Don't give up,” said Uncle George and Aunt Lisa. But it was half time, and Cali was feeling upset. She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. Maybe she would try a different sport next summer.
The break was over and the referee (裁判) blew her whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Cali heard her aunt whisper in her ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.” Cali took a deep breath. Even if she didn't get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of.
The yellow team was pretty good, but Cali's blue team was fast. Cali was off to the side when the ball headed her way. She ran over to it and kicked it. She watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. Cali sighed (叹气) .
Cali decided she'd wait until the game was over and then she was going to hang up her soccer shoes for good. Cali started daydreaming about becoming a hip hop dancer instead. She was woken from her daydream by some music that was definitely not hip hop. It was the sweet, happy jingle of the ice cream truck.
