Since it first opened after four years of construction in 1937 at a cost of $27 million, the Golden Gate Bridge has made its appearance in films and poetry.
CNN Travel spent a day climbing into and ground the bridge, learning these secrets from the people who know and love it best.
Why is it called the Golden Gate Bridge It's not golden.
“The Golden Gate Bridge gets its name because it spans what is called the Golden Gate Strait,”said Paolo Cosulich Schwartz, spokesman for the Golden Gate Bridge,Highway and Transportation District, which operates the bridge. It's a three mile long and one mile wide body of water that connects the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay.
What color is the bridge It looks red.
“It's not red, although you're not crazy to think so. Visitors all call it red,”said Russell. “Back in the day,the US Navy, then part of the War Department, oversaw the waterways and wanted to paint this bridge black and yellow for high visibility,”said fellow painter Jarrod Bauer. “They ended up mixing paint to create the color International Orange, which is similar to the color of red lead,”he said.
Does the bridge get entirely painted every year
No,and it doesn't need to be. It's true that the top coat has been fully repainted over time with new and environmentally improved International Orange top coats.
Who performs bridge rescues
McVeigh and his fellow ironworkers, the so called “Cowboys of the Sky”,have that responsibility. McVeigh has lost count of how many troubled souls he's been called to rescue over the past 17 years.
In September in 2018,the bridge started constructing a suicide(自杀)prevention system, also known as the safety net,to keep people from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. It's expected to be completed in 2021.
21.What's the true color of the Golden Gate Bridge
A.Red. B.Red lead.
C.Black and yellow. D.International Orange.
22.Who can probably be called a hero on the Golden Gate Bridge
A.McVeigh. B.Jarrod Bauer. C.Russell. D.Paolo.
23.What can we know about the Golden Gate Bridge
A.It is safer now because of the safety net. B.It got its name because of its color.
C.It took much time and money to be built. D.It needs to be repainted once a year.

Both of my parents worked full time when I was a little girl,so my grandmother would stay at our house during the day. We would watch game shows in the living room. Our favorite was ThePriceIsRight. We would call out our answers along with the contestants.
When I got older and started going to school,we couldn't watch our game shows regularly. That was okay with me,though, because the one thing I liked better than watching game shows with my grandmother was helping her bake cakes. Watching her in the kitchen was amazing:she never seemed to need the recipes(食谱)but everything she made tasted delicious.
At first I would just sit in the kitchen and watch, even though I didn't understand what she was doing. As I got older, she let me help with the easy parts, such as measuring the sugar. The day she let me separate the eggs,I felt like I had found complete pleasure.
At last,my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day. The love of baking, however, stayed with me. I started baking by myself, and even if the cookies ended up burnt sometimes, more often they turned out pretty well. I tried out new recipes, and whenever I got to a thorny part,I would call my grandmother for advice. Sometimes I would call her just to talk too. I felt like I could talk to her about anything.
My grandmother passed away ten years ago,but I still think of her every day. Last week,I found a recipe book she made for me. It included her recipes for brownies, cookies, and my favorite, lemon pie. As I looked through the pages,I thought I could hear her voice. She was the one who taught me not just about baking, but about life.
24.The passage is mainly developed by________.
A.analyzing causes B.making comparisons
C.following the time order D.examining differences
25.While helping her grandmother bake, the author________.
A.found it interesting B.turned out to be a troublemaker
C.hoped to make a living by baking D.regretted missing the game shows
26.What does the underlined word “thorny” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Basic. B.Common. C.Special. D.Difficult.
27.What's the author's purpose in writing this passage
A.To describe her childhood memories. B.To show her good baking skills.
C.To remember her grandmother. D.To talk about her happy family life.

In 1914,Emest Shackleton and his team left England in a wooden sailing ship called the Endurance, hoping to become the first to cross Antarctica.
But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped over the Weddell Sea. The ice destroyed the Endurance and later sank it. Shackleton and all of his men abandoned the ship and managed to stay alive. Although they failed to complete the expedition, the tale of their long and difficult return is one of the most famous survival stories of all time.
Much was known about the location of the Endurance. The ship's captain kept accurate records of the ship's position. The ship's photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found.
Now, a search team called “Endurance 22” located the ship, which was found 1.87 miles below the ocean's surface, about four miles south of its last known position. The team reports that the ship is in excellent shape. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small worms that normally break down wooden objects underwater don't live in the cold waters around Antarctica.
The Endurance 22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an ice breaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths which can travel by themselves deep under the sea. What makes them unique is that they can travel under the ice and go where the ship can not. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used high quality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.
The Endurance 22 plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using the careful scans they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.
28.What can we know about Shackleton
A.He built the Endurance by himself. B.He was also a famous photographer.
C.He had a tough journey back home. D.He crossed Antarctica by the Endurance.
29.What helped preserve “the Endurance” well
A.Fine weather. B.Cold water. C.Wood material. D.Unique structure.
30.What is special about the Sabertooths
A.They can repair the ship. B.They can travel under the ice.
C.They can break ice on the sea. D.They can take pictures in detail.
31.How will the scientists deal with the discovered Endurance
A.They will let it remain untouched.
B.They will rebuild it using 3D technology.
C.They will use scanners to record its details.
D.They will do research on creating a model.

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e books, people are spending more time eyeballing screens.
While online reading opens up a vast amount of knowledge to people, there are some drawbacks, too. This includes eyestrain, headaches as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system has been intended to help people overcome these issues and read faster online.
A reading system called Bionic Reading, which was developed by Swiss designer Renato Cassutt, was constructed with the belief that your brain can read faster than your eyes. The system involves showing the first few letters of each word in bold (以粗体显示) which actually allows your eyes to skip over parts of the text while your brain fills in what is missing. It is incredible how reading this feels like finally unlocking 100 percent of people's brain.
Cassutt came up with the system by accident. He was working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it if he sectioned it off. He worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to perfect it.
Many people who want to strengthen their reading ability show interest in it, but more research is needed before it can be finally shown that the system improves reading. But people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (注意缺陷多动障碍) and dyslexia (阅读障碍) have confirmed that Bionic Reading can help them focus on and comprehend what they are reading.
Cassutt's goal is to combine the system with all apps and online services. “In a digital world dominated (支配) by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in—depth reading and understanding of written content,” he said. The Bionic Reader is available in the following apps, Reeder 5, Fiery Feeds, Lire, and Next App. The best way to know if it helps you read better online is to try it yourself and find out what it is all about.
32.What is Bionic Reading designed to do
A.Encourage more ways of obtaining knowledge.
B.Urge people to spend more time eyeballing screens.
C.Support struggling readers with comprehension skills.
D.Improve online reading by highlighting parts of the words.
33.Who is reported to have benefited from the reading system
A.Those with a hobby of reading. B.Those with reading disabilities.
C.Those who work for the system. D.Those who are addicted to e books.
34.Which of the following is recommended in the text
A.Trying the system to read. B.Becoming used to all forms of reading.
C.Increasing the efficiency of the system. D.Making the system available to the public.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Reading is sure to perfect our mind
B.Reading ability is of great significance
C.A new pioneering system betters online reading
D.Spending more time reading online is worthwhile

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I always wonder how people will react if I want a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a crowded station. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I was stuck in such a hopeless situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall (中心) buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could help me telephone my driver. She replied, still all smiles, “I'm sorry, Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory (理论) that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

Text 10
When Jackie Robinson walked onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, on April 15, 1947, he changed baseball forever. As the first African American to play in the Major League in modern times, many believe he changed the country forever.
Robinson was born in 1919. He lived in a time when rules controlled what African Americans could do. He was a top athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. But playing for a Major League team was off limits to Robinson because of his race.
Branch Rickey, president and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed Robinson in 1947. He believed that Robinson not only had the skills, but the courage to face the challenge of becoming modern baseball's first black player.
It wasn't easy. Robinson sometimes faced shouts of laugh and disapproval from fans. But he became a star, anyway. In 1962, he became the first African American player chosen to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress can give to an American.
By breaking baseball's color barrier, Robinson opened the door for many to follow his footsteps, not only in baseball, but in other areas of life as well. After he stopped playing the game, Robinson worked as a manager for a coffee company. He wrote a newspaper column. He also started a bank.

However, without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer. I stood there, hopeless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
FinallyamanwearingacheapT shirtanddirtyjeansseemedtonoticeme. I squeezed a smile and requested him the same thing. Unexpectedly, he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation.
