Sam’s Holiday Blog
The Big Apple (New York City) Hi, everyone! I’m writing a holiday blog. My family and I usually spend our summer holidays camping in England, but this time we plan to do something different. We’re going to New York! Fantastic!

It’s 10: 00 pm and I’m a little tired, but I’m also excited about the trip! I can’t wait to get there! Tuesday We’re finally in the Big Apple! Our hotel is perfect because it’s next to Times Square. We can see lots of tall buildings from the window. Right now I’m having a usual American breakfast—pancakes with maple syrup(枫糖浆). They’re delicious. Wednesday Today I’m riding a bike in Central Park with my mum. It’s a very large park in the middle of Manhattan. The weather is great—it’s sunny. My dad isn’t here with us. He is shopping on Fifth Avenue with my sister. Thursday It’s our last day in New York, but I don’t want to go home! At the moment, we’re standing at the top of the Empire State Building. From here, I can see the Chrysler Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. How wonderful! I love New York!

In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by small talk. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries, people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice, isn’t it ” “Terrible weather, isn’t it ” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great game, isn’t it ” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn’t it ”
Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.
8. What is small talk
A. It’s a topic people disagree about something.
B. It’s a kind of conversation with short words.
C. It’s a greeting when people meet each other.
D. It’s something we talk about to start with a conversation.
9. What’s the favorite topic of small talk about
A. Games. B. The weather.
C. Languages D. Politics.
10. The passage suggests that when we learn a language, ________.
A. we should know the culture about the country
B. we should only master the grammar and vocabulary
C. we should grasp the importance of the language
D. we should learn about the transport system of the country
11. What do we learn from the passage
A. In English-speaking countries we should talk about the weather.
B. Different languages have different grammar.
C. Small talk is an important part in a language.
D. Small talk depends on the purpose of the conversation.

A livestreaming platform (直播平台)once tried to broadcast (播出)classroom situations live, including students having classes or self-studying. It raised a heated discussion. Here are some students' opinions.
Student A: I agree with it. When I watched the videos, I saw some comments from adults like "It reminds me of my school life" and "I admire the way they focus on studying. I want to go back to my school time." It is true that we should have our privacy (隐私) but the livestreaming show reminds adults of their wonderful memories of school. It's a good thing.
Student B: I support the idea. Students' parents can see what they are doing at school. It will help them know their children better. What's more, I think if students know they are on a live show, they will behave themselves. Teachers will try to make their classes more interesting.
Student C: In my opinion, it's bad to show students' performances in the classroom on the internet. It's a violation (侵犯) of privacy. Not only can the parents of these kids watch it on their computers or mobile phones, but also other people in society. It's not safe, because bad people may make use of the videos illegally(非法地) and hurt these students.
Student D: It’s not a polite way to do that. Through the live broadcast, people across the country can see the students' acts but those students don’t know about it at all. If it is an open class and the school has got the students' permission(允许), it will be fine. But now it seems that the platform is directly putting the videos on the internet without permission, which is not proper.
12. How many students clearly support(支持) the livestream
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
13. With the livestream, student B thinks that__________.
A. students will value their school life more
B. teachers don't need to monitor the classroom
C. parents will know their kids better
D. students might feel stressed
14. Which student thinks that the videos might be used in a bad way
A. Student A B. Student B
C. Student C D. Student D
15. What right(权利) does student D think livestreaming violates
A. The right to freedom of expression. B. The right to education.
C. The right to fairness. D. The right to privacy.
