When you and your family go out for dinner, do you notice how many dishes you usually order It’s OK if you finish all of them. But if you waste too much food, you need to pay for it.
Last year, China’s top legislature (立法机关) reviewed (审议) a draft law (法律草案) for stopping food waste for the first time. In general, a draft will become law after the top legislature reviews it three times.
According to the draft law, restaurants should tell customers not to order too much. If customers leave too much food uneaten, restaurants can charge (收费) them for food waste. The law also bans (禁止) waiters from encouraging people to order too much food. Some restaurants may use the “N-1” mode for people to order dishes. “N” stands for the number of persons at a table. So if there are six people at your table, you should order just five dishes, which can help people control the amount of dishes in a proper way.
The draft law also asks schools to teach their students to avoid food waste. It also bans TV programs about overeating and overdrinking. Producers of such programs will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan.

April 22nd is World Earth Day—a day to remind people to protect the earth. So on that day, our family held an activity “bottle of trash challenge”. That means the trash needs to be put in a 600ml bottle. We decided to challenge ourselves and produce as little trash as possible.
My father worked online all day, so he didn’t produce any paper waste except paper napkins. He made the least trash in our family.
My mother cooked and produced plenty of kitchen waste, such as vegetable leaves, eggshells and food bags. What’s worse, we couldn’t eat up all the food of the dinner that day. So leftovers couldn’t be avoided. It was not easy for mom to deal with all the trash, but she found a way to put it all into the bottle. How amazing!
My sister, a 16-year-old student, was busy preparing for her exams. She had to use paper to work out math or physics problems. She used only one side of the paper in the past. But that day, she tried to use both sides of the paper because she realized we were challenging ourselves. She did a good job!
I was different from my sister. I love snacks and drinks. So my trash was almost from them. I was highly alert (警觉的) that I must produce less waste. I hardly ever had snacks or drinks. It was too difficult, but I did it!
I’ve learnt a lot from this activity. I realize that everyone can produce less trash. We should start with small actions to protect the earth!

You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” It is almost 6,400 kilometers long. As the world’s third-longest river, it covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone (长江经济带) covers eleven provinces and cities, making up about forty percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On December 26, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which came into force on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The mother river is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish has died out there. There’s also desertified (沙漠化的) land and soil pollution near the river.
According to the law, fishing will not be allowed in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流) and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Digging sand will be strictly limited in the river. Many companies are digging sand along the river. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water to decline.
Companies and factories along the river will need to focus on green development. If their activities do harm to the waterways, they will be moved away, the law says.

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws (吸管) and bags. More and more businesses are turning to paper products (产品) as a choice. As a kind of material, paper is widely considered to be greener than plastic. However, it may come as a surprise when we find out the truth.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as we all know, can reduce carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels in the air. They can slow down climate (气候) change. The use of more paper bags can lead to more acts of cutting down trees.
Secondly, products made of paper require more energy and water. About 10% more energy and four times more water are used to produce a paper bag than to make a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand-new paper bag.
Thirdly, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more oil to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while to transport the same number of plastic bags, one truck is enough. Once the bags are thrown away, the increased weight also leads to a large amount of waste.
So, paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are harmful to our planet (星球), as well as the plastic ones. Is there anything we can do to protect our planet
The most environment-friendly solution (解决方案) is to avoid single-use products. Products like glass bottles and steel straws can be reused easily. They are much more eco-friendly (对生态环境友好的) than either paper products or plastic ones. By increasing the usage of these products, we can greatly reduce the throw-away waste in our daily life and save more resources. If so, we can truly make our planet greener!
How to make our planet greener
Introduction It is not (1) that using paper instead of plastic will be greener.
Explanations: why using paper products isn’t a good way ● (2) more acts of cutting down trees. Trees can slow down climate change by (3) carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. ●Require more energy and water ※ (4) a paper bag takes about 10% more energy and four times more water than a plastic one. ※Making a brand-new paper bag takes (5) energy and water than going through the recycling process. ●Require more oil to transport ※Transporting two million paper bags needs (6) times as many trucks as transporting the same number of plastic ones. ※The increased weight also leads to much waste once we (7) the bags away.
Conclusion Paper products are actually a lose-lose for not only the environment but also businesses. Using (8) products does harm to environment, as well as plastic ones.
(9) ●Avoiding single-use products is the most environment-friendly way. ●We can use products like glass water bottles and steel straws (10) of plastic ones. ●Reducing the throw-away waste can help save more resources.
