Analysis of teaching material What: It talks about how often do No.5 high school students exercise, use the Internet and watch TV in their free time. Why: By showing the result of the survey, the author’s aim is to help students realize what is the best way to relax and learn to live more healthily. How: It’s a survey report about school students’ free time activities, including its topic, result and brief summary .
Teaching objectives By the end of this lesson, students will be able to obtain and organize the basic information about this survey report by viewing, speaking and reading; (learning and understanding) use sentence pattern “How often do they ... ” and “...% of students ...(adverbial of frequency) ...(activity).” to describe the information among pie charts and analyze weather students in No.5 are healthy or not; (applying and practicing) do a survey in group and make a pie chart about how often do group members do certain activities in their free time by talking, and express their view about the healthy lifestyle briefly.(transferring and creating)
Teaching focus Guide and help students to understand the main idea and detailed information of the passage. Guide and help students to use adverb of frequency to describe pie chart.
Anticipated difficulties Students may feel it difficult to collect information about how often do classmates do certain activity by asking questions and make a chart according to survey result.
Teaching procedure Teaching objective 1 : obtain and organize the basic information about this survey report by viewing, speaking and reading; (learning and understanding) Activity 1: Free talk Ask some questions like “What do you do in your free time ” and “How often do you... ” , and invite several students to give their answers. Activity 2: Look and predict Introduce an English teacher from No.5 High School to them and tell students that she has done a survey about “What do students in No.5 High School do in their free time” ,and then let students predict what were the question may about in this survey. Activity 3:Read and find Students go through the passage to find the main idea of it and check their prediction about what were the question in survey about. Activity 4: Read and complete Students read the passage carefully and complete the pie chart about the result of survey. Activity 5: Read and answer Students read the passage again and answer questions: How often do most students watch TV What do they usually watch What does the author think is the best way to relax Why Teaching objective 2: use sentence pattern “How often do they ... ” and “...% of students ...(adverbial of frequency) ...(activity).” to describe the information among pie charts and analyze weather students in No.5 are healthy or not; (applying and practicing) Activity 6: Pair work Students work in pairs to make a conversation according to pie charts(answer with adverbial of frequency) and talk about: “Weather they think the students at No.5 are healthy Why or why not ” Teaching objective 3: do a survey in group and make a pie chart about how often do group members do certain activities in their free time by talking, and express their view about the healthy lifestyle briefly.(transferring and creating) Activity 7: Group work Students are asked to work in groups of six. Everyone choose one free time activity and ask how often do group members do it in their free time, and then make a pie chart according to the result. Some volunteers are invited to show their chart and talk about their opinions about healthy lifestyle briefly according to it. Introductions Activity 1、2:Activate students’ schema, arose students’ interests and introduce the topic smoothly. Activity 3、4、5:In the activities based on extensive reading to intensive reading, students can learn to organize specific information into pie charts and have a increasingly deep understanding of the passage, which paves the way for language production; Activity 6: Students are given chance to apply what they have learned into practice based on the information provided by the context; Activity 7: Students are given chance to use what they have learned in a new situation and express their view about healthy life critically and creatively.
Homework Must-do: Draw the pie chart you have finished in the class neatly and write down the description of it (use adverbial of frequency) and your view on the paper. Optional: Search for more information on the Internet about healthy lifestyle of high school students and share it with your classmates.

Reflection These teaching activities can lead students to go through the progress from learning and understanding to applying and practicing and then to transferring and creating, which is conducive to their development in language ability, thinking ability and learning ability. However, there are still something need to be improved: 1. The lead-in part of lesson is not interesting enough; 2. The situations created in activities are not very authentic and close to their life, so some students’ enthusiasm in learning may can’t be arose; 3. Words are not paid much attention in this teaching design, so some students may feel it difficult to make conversation by themselves.
