Analysis of teaching material What: The listening material belongs to the thematic context of Man and self, concerning learning about yourself. It’s a interview between Tina, her sister Tara, and the interviewer talking about the differences between Tina and Tara in personal traits. Why: This interview can help teenagers understand the basic ways of communicating in English in daily life, mainly by expressing approval or disapproval of opinions given by others. This listening text aims to enable students to better understand themselves and the people around them. How: As it’s an interview, the dialogue is formal, different from daily communication in English. It includes some thematic vocabulary related to personal traits like “outgoing”, “serious”, “hard-working”, some language expressions about how to respond to others , such as “oh sure” , “really” and “not really” and expressions about how to express personal opinions like “ I think ...”.
Teaching objectives By the end of the class, my students will be able to: 1. Acquire the factual information about the personal traits in the conversation between Tina, Tara and the interviewer, such as the differences in personality between Tina and Tara; Grasp the meaning and pronunciation of new words like outgoing, hard-working, and serious; learn how to use the basic sentence structure for comparing. (learning and understanding) 2. Make new conversations about comparing people using target words and sentence structures based on the information provided by the recording. (applying and practicing) 3. Talk about and compare the personal traits of their close friends or siblings using the words and sentence structures acquired in the class. (transferring and creating)
Teaching focus Grasp the key information about the differences in personal traits between Tina and Tara. Be able to make new sentences about comparing people on their own.

Teaching procedure Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins) Watch a movie clip of The Parent Trap about a pair of twins. Find out the differences between Hallie and Annie. Introductions A short video clip could not only attract ss’ interests but also activate their own prior knowledge about the topic.
Step 2 Short Listening (7 mins) Match pairs of opposites and introduce target words “quietly”, “loudly”. Listen and number the pairs of twins in the picture. Listen and fill in the blank. Choose one of those conversations and do a role play. Short listening practice can help ss internalize new words and lay a foundation for the following listening activities. Objectives: Grasp the meaning and pronunciation of new words
Step 3 Listen for Comparative Adjectives (3 mins) Listen and find out comparatives adjectives in the interview. Share and check the answers with the whole class. Since comparative adjectives are the new target grammar in this unit, letting ss focus them is helpful in getting ss familiarized with the new grammar.
Step 4 Listen and Judge (5 mins) Listen and judge the following statements are true or false. Tara and Tina look similar but they are different. Tara is more outgoing than Tina. Tina loves sports. Tara thinks she is lazier than Tina. Objectives: Acquire the factual information about the personal traits in the conversation. This listening activity is designed to develop ss’s ability to locate the specific information and note-taking skill.
Step 5 Listen and Imitate (5 mins) Listen and repeat after the dialogue. Pay attention to the words with -(i)er or more and intonation of the speakers. Work in three and role play the conversation. The third listening aims to develop ss’s ability to imitate so as to improve their spoken English and help them better understand the content of the interview.
Step 6 Pair work ( 6 mins) Work in pairs. Ask and answer questions about Sam and Tom on page 18. Share their sentences with the class. Objectives: Learn how to use the basic sentence structure for comparing; make new conversations about comparing people. With the help of the given information in the table, ss can practice using the sentence structure and the words with -(i)er or more.
Step 7 Make Conversations (7 mins) Work in pairs and make their own conversation about comparing people around them using the words and sentence structures acquired in the class. Share their conversations with the whole class. Objectives: Talk about and compare the personal traits of their close friends or siblings. Pair work can not only give ss opportunity to practice spoken English while focusing on the meaning of their sentences but also learn from each other.
Step 8 Summary (2 mins) Ss and T together reflect and summarize what have been learned. Reviewing can consolidate what have been covered in the class and form a good study habit.

Reflection The lesson follows the basic steps of listening and speaking, which aims to help students grasp the key information about the differences in personal traits between Tina and Tara and be able to make new sentences about comparing people on their own. However, this lesson could be better if there are more in-depth questions concerning creative and critical thinking and more authentic settings for listening input and oral output.
