Analysis of teaching material What:The theme of this unit is “Man and self”. This reading material is an exposition about resolutions. In this passage, it has three parts, the first part(para. 1) is about the meaning of resolution, the second part(para. 2) is about different kinds of resolutions and the last part(para. 3) is to question the idea of making resolutions. Why: The author illustrates the meaning, varieties of resolutions and calls for people to achieve resolutions. From those, the author wants to demonstrate significance of future plans and keep it, otherwise, it’s advisable to have no resolutions. Also, the purpose is to provoke readers’ hope about future and adhere to achieve resolutions. How:The author uses words and chunks to precisely delineated the meaning of resolution, for instance, “promise, at the beginning of, write down” ; uses “physical, have to do with, self-improvement, take up, hobby, weekly” to introduce kinds of resolutions and aims of resolutions; uses an example to show that not making a resolution is better than not making a resolution.
Teaching objectives By the end of the lesson, students are able 1. to obtain the basic information about resolutions and interpret、summarize the structure of the passage. (Learning and understanding) 2. to analyze the reason why the author wants to write this kind of passage about future plans, internalize the significance of resolutions and perseverance of keeping resolutions and apply the newly learned wards and phrases, such as“promise; self-improvement; at the beginning of ; write down; be about”,etc. (Applying and practicing) 3. to evaluate merits of resolutions and influences on themselves and critically think and share their opinions whether their resolutions is beneficial for themselves or not, so they can form good habits of future plan.(Transferring and creating)
Teaching focus 1. Students can master the newly learned words and phrases, such as “promise; self-improvement; at the beginning of ; write down; be about”, etc. 2. Students can understand the main idea of the text and know the structure of the passage.
Anticipated difficulties 1. Students can apply freely and accurately the newly learned words and phrases in the speaking task. 2. Students can critically talk about their resolutions and ways to keep them with partners.
Teaching procedure Teaching objective1:Students are able to obtain the basic information about resolutions and interpret、summarize the structure of the passage. (Learning and understanding) Activity 1. Watch a video Students are asked to watch a video about New Year’s resolutions and answer the following questions.1.How many New Year’s resolutions are mentioned in this video 2.What are they Activity 2. Read and match Students are asked to read the passage quickly and match each paragraph [1~3] with its main purpose. Teaching objective2:Students are able to analyze the reason why the author wants to write this kind of passage about future plans, internalize the significance of resolutions and perseverance of keeping resolutions and apply the newly learned wards and phrases, such as“promise; self-improvement; at the beginning of ; write down; be about”,etc. (Applying and practicing) Activity 3. Read and fill Students are asked to read the passage again and put the sentences[A~D] in the correct places. Activity 4. Read and complete Students are asked to read paragraph1 carefully and complete the chart. Activity 5. Read and answer Students are asked to read paragraph2 carefully and answer 2 questions. 1.How many kinds of resolutions are mentioned 2.What are they? Activity 6. Read and fill Students are asked to read paragraph3 carefully and fill in the blanks. Activity 7. Discuss Students are grouped into 4 and discuss one question “If people want to keep their resolutions, what should they do ”. (Using be going to.. and learned words and phrases.) Teaching objective3:Students are able to evaluate merits of resolutions and influences on themselves and critically think and share their opinions whether their resolutions is beneficial for themselves or not, so they can form good habits of future plan.(Transferring and creating) Activity 8. Debate Students are asked to debate “Is it necessary to make resolutions ”. And students with the same opinion are in a team. Introductions Activity 1 will help students’ review what they learned in the last class, practice their view ability and trigger original schema. Activity 2 is aim at practicing students’ logical and summarizing ability, also helps students get the main idea of the passage. Activity 3-7 makes students better understand the content of each paragraph and facilitates students’ inferential capability, also consolidates students’ learned sentences into practice. Activity 8 will improve students’ logical and speaking ability, hoping them form right future plan.
Homework Must-do: Talk with your friends about your resolutions and ways to keep them.(Using be going to..) Optional: Surf the Internet about effective ways to keep resolutions.
Blackboard design
Reflection This passage has clear logic. And my designed activities are aim to sort out the context of the article and know the writer’s purpose for students. But in other words, different students have different levels and the last activity would be hard for lower-level students and they will lose enthusiasm for indulging in the activity and without sense of participation.
