Go For It 8A Unit 7 Section A 1a-2d
Analysis of teaching material What: The listening texts are daily conversations about people’s predictions about life in the future. Why: These two listening texts belong to the themes of “person and society” and “person and nature” and mainly make students acquire the ability to make predictions so that they can imagine their lives in the future freely, face the changes in the future with a positive mindset, and raise their awareness of paying attention to the environment. How: These two listening texts are both communications happening in daily lives between friends and among the teacher and students respectively. They mainly focus on the use of the simple future tense “will” and comparative quantifiers “more”, “fewer” and “less”. There are also several simple sentences, colloquial phrases or words, and complex sentences (mainly object clauses).
Teaching objectives By the end of the session, most students will be able to understand and use correctly the simple future tense “will” and “there will be” and comparative quantifiers “more”, “fewer” and “less” (Learning and Understanding), make their own predictions about the future (Applying and Practicing), develop student’s positive attitude towards the future and raise their awareness of protecting the environment (Transferring and Creating). This will be achieved by: 1. teaching students vocabulary such as pollute, pollution, future, earth, environment, plant, etc. 2. teaching students sentence structures, including "What will the future be like " "Will people use money in 100 years " "Yes, they will." "No, they won’t." "There will be more/fewer/less...", etc.
Teaching focus Listening: Understand the main idea of the conversation and speakers’ opinions. Vocabulary: future, pollute, pollution, environment, planet, earth, plant, and so on.
Anticipated difficulties Students may feel it difficult to make predictions about the future by using the simple future tense “will” and “there will be”, and comparative quantifiers “more”, “fewer” and “less” properly.
Teaching procedure Step 1 Lead-in (Learning and Understanding) 1. Show pictures of the movie The Wandering Earth II, and ask the following questions: 1) Have you ever watched it 2) What does the future look like 2. Induce students to make their own predictions about life in the future. Step 2 Read and Check 1. Read the predictions in 1a. (Learning and Understanding) 2. Check A for agree and D for disagree. (Learning and Understanding) 3. Discuss their ideas with their partners and make conversations according to the example in 1c. (Applying and Practicing) Step 3 Listen to the first tape (Learning and Understanding) 1. Listen and circle the predictions in 1a. 2. Listen again and repeat to improve their pronunciation. Step 4 Look and Predict (Learning and Understanding) Show some pictures to let students make the following predictions. 1) Will there be more trees 2) Will there be more people 3) Will there be fewer cars 4) Will there be less pollution 5) Why will there be less pollution Step 5 Listen to the second tape (Learning and Understanding) 1. Listen and circle the words you hear. 2. Listen again and fill in the blanks with the comments from Ms. Steen. Step 6 Pair Work (Applying and Practicing) Choose one of the following topics in the future and discuss with partners by following the example in 2d. 1) Learning 2) Technology 3) Environment Step 7 Group Work (Transferring and Creating) Two pairs form a group and exchange their opinions about the future. Then, each pair evaluate the opinions of the other pair, make more predictions about the future of the above three topics and prepare for a report. Introductions Step 1: to attract students’ attention, make them more interested in learning content and introduce the topic of this unit: future. Step 2: to understand and use correctly the future tense “will” and practice the ability to make predictions. Step 3: to practice students’ listening strategies of listening for keywords. Step 4: to enable students to differentiate between “fewer” and “less” and improve their logical thinking. Step5: to practice students’ listening strategies. Step 6: to strengthen students’ ability to work in pairs and make predictions. Step 7: to strengthen students’ ability to work in groups and promote students’ oral expressions skills.
Homework 1. Must-do: listen and imitate the two listening tapes. 2. Optional: Write a short composition about your predictions in 100 years.
Blackboard design Unit7 Will people have robots Section A 1a-2d (Listening) Will people... Yes, they will. / No, they won’t (= will not). Will there be... What will the future be like There will be... many/much-more few-fewer little-less
Reflection This lesson is for listening and speaking. In the beginning of the class, the movie attracts students’ attention and makes them more interested in the next parts. Through listening, students get the points of vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar so they can behave well when doing the pair work. However, it may contain some grammar rules which is not related to the teaching objectives. Besides, some tasks in the textbook are a bit easy for students so it is should be considered whether these tasks can be combined or adjusted.
