Teaching design
Part One: Learning Goals
With some questions, students are able to predict what will be talked in the listening material by looking at given pictures in 2a carefully.
Students are able to know the proper approach to dealing with the phone-call situation where an unwanted person answers the phone by learning two dialogues.
Students are able to make up a proper and logic conversation based on what they have learnt in this period, like talking about the weather, saying hello to others, asking what others are doing or requesting others to take a message for him/her politely.
Part Two: Important Points
Develop students’ ability to predict in listening by looking at given pictures carefully.
Develop students’ ability to grasp key information based on questions.
Develop students’ ability to communicate with others properly.
Part Three: Difficult Points
How to deal with unexpected situations like making a phone call to an unwanted person by learning from Jim’s and Steve’s dialogues.
Part Four: Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead in—Review
Activity One—Brainstorm
Ask students to brainstorm some description words about weather to activate what they have learnt.
Activity Two—Consolidation Games
Invite students to play two games for consolidation.
Activity Three—Look and Say (pair work)
After showing students an example, have students work in pairs to make short conversations by looking at pictures and saying.
Example:
—How’s the weather —It’s rainy/ raining.
Step 2: Listening
Activity Four—Look and Say
Before listening, first display a picture and introduce a boy (Jim) to students, and then ask students to look at the picture carefully to get ready for questions.
Questions: What is Jim doing
Who is Jim talking on the phone with
What is this woman doing
What is this girl doing
What is this boy doing
What is this man doing
What’s the relationship(关系) between them
“Is Jim in this family ” With this question, have students listen for the first time and number the pictures 1-4.
Activity Five—Write and Say
After listening, students can find Jim is not in this family. So have students check the numbers, mark their names below the picture and ask students to write down the answers to the questions below.
Questions: How many people are there in Linda’s family What are they
What time is it now
How’s the weather
What are they doing
While students are writing, remind students to try to make these sentences into a short passage by using some linking words.
Show some of students’ works by picturing them on the screen through an app and invite students to share in class by reading them aloud.
Activity Six—Listen and Think Further
Lead students to have a further thinking by asking students some more challenging questions and get ready for listening for the second time.
Questions: Who makes the phone call first
What’s the weather like in Jim’s place
After listening for the second time, check the answers and raise new questions for thinking.
Questions: Are Jim and Linda’s family in the same place
(Display a summary: Different places have different weather. )
Why does Jim make this phone call (He wants to talk to Mary.)
Does Jim say hello to other family members
What do you think of Jim
What will Jim do next
Step 3: A Mini Summary
Ask students to think what they can learn from this conversation.
In order to tell students how to deal with such a problem, have students look back on what happened in the conversation by showing students a flow chart.
When you are making a call, sometimes the person you want to reach will answer the phone, but sometimes the person who answers the phone is not the person you want. In this way, to show you are polite, you can say hello to them, inquire what he/she is doing, talk about he weather and at last ask him/her to take a message for you instead of hanging up the phone right now.
Step 4: Role Play
Activity Seven—Look and Read
Have students read the first two lines by asking students questions after looking at the picture in 2d role-play.
Question: What is he doing
Who is he talking to
Have students read the conversation for the first time by thinking about questions.
Questions: Who makes the phone call
Who answers the phone call
After checking the answers to the questions before, have students think about questions below.
Questions: Who does Steve want to talk to
What is Rick’s brother doing
Does Steve hang up the phone right now
What are Steve and Rick talking about
What do you think of Steve
Ask students to read the conversation for the second time to find sentences to show Steve is polite and display more ways to express requests politely.
Example:
Could you do…
Would you like to do ….
Ask students “What do they think of Rick ” and have students read the conversation for the third time.
Activity Eight—Design and Say
Have students read the conversation after the tape for consolidation and ask them to make up a conversation by creating a new setting.
“It is 5:00 p.m. and Rick’s brother Peter comes back and makes a phone call to Steve. What would they talk about ”
Have students discuss for a while with their deskmates and write down the conversation. It should include(包括): what are you doing How’s the weather Could you please …../Would you like to …
Invite some students to show their own dialogues after writing and practicing.
Step 5: Conclusion
Have students review the important points in this period by asking students questions.
Questions: How to ask about weather
How to show polite requests in daily conversations
How to be polite if the person you want is not on the phone
Step 6: Homework
Polish their conversation after class.
Act out their own conversations and video them.
