Analysis of teaching material What: This passage is about an interesting but scary weekend that Lisa’s family were camping outside and ran across a snake. Why: Through learning Lisa family’s camping experience, students will be informed about the feature of snake, and know the significance of protecting themselves in the outside. How: Through learning relevant expressions, such as put up the tent, make fire, cook food, and the use of past simple tense. And learning how to narrate a story in time order.
Teaching objectives By the end of the session, most students will be able to understand Lisa’s travel story in the countryside, and can tell simple stories with past simple tense, and have awareness to keep safe while camping and want to know more outdoor knowledge. This will be achieved by: presenting some dangerous situations that really happened while camping. teaching students vocabulary and phrases and sentence structures, such as scary, shout, put up a tent, make fire, "On the first night, …""I was so scared that…""It was important....", and so on. And analyzing the narrative order of the passage. letting students retell the story with clues. asking students what they have learnt from this story and giving suggestions. letting students to tell their story that happened last weekend.
Teaching focus Reading: Understand the main idea of the story. Vocabulary and phrases: scary, shout, put up a tent, make fire, keep warm, wake up… Rising students’ safety awareness.

Objectives Procedure Evaluation
1. Presenting some dangerous situations that really happened while camping. 2. Teaching students new language points, such as scary, put up a tent, make fire, "On the first night, …""I was so scared that…""It was important....", and so on. And analyzing the narrative order of the passage. (Remember, understand and analyze) Teaching procedure Step 1 Lead-in (5mins) Teacher will present a video of scared snake, and ask students what animals make them feel scared, and ask them about the common characteristics of these kind of animals to figure out the reason that these animals make human feel scared. Step 2 Present real dangerous events (2mins) Teacher will present real dangerous events that people encountered in the outside. And warn them they should keep safe when going out, and lead in the passage. Step 3 Read for gist (6mins) Teacher tells students that Lisa and her family came across a dangerous event last weekend. And then read the passage quickly and answer the questions to understand the passage on the whole. Step 4 Careful reading (10mins) Read carefully and answer the questions that are put forward according to the passage in details. And students will be guided to find out the author write this story in time order. Teacher will observe students’ reaction while watching the short video, and give directions. Teacher will check if students’ answer is correct to judge if they have understood the passage and the language points and give feedbacks.
Justification: In this stage, students are guided to learn new language points, to understand the passage and get ready for the output. And also enhance their awareness of protecting themselves.
3. Letting students retell the story with clues. (Apply and evaluate) Step 5 Retell the story (6mins) Students will be asked to put phrases in order according to the passage. Then use them to retell the story with emotion. And rest students will be asked to evaluate the presentation in fluency, accuracy and emotion, with a rating form. Teacher will observe if students tell the story correctly to figure out their learning condition.
Justification: In this stage, students are guided to try to tell the story in time order, and get familiar with this narrative way, and get ready for authentic expression.
Asking students what they have learnt from this story and giving suggestions. Letting students to tell their story that happened last weekend. (Create) Step 6 Suggestions (4mins) Students will be asked what else do they learn from this passage. And try to give some suggestions that should be pay attention to while going out. Step 7 Tell stories: What did you do last weekend (7mins) After given an example, students will be asked to tell what did they do last weekend simply in time order with given language structure. Teacher will observe if students tell their own story in right order and use the language correctly, and give some guidance and feedbacks.
Justification: In this stage, students are helped to use new learned language to make authentic expression, to tell their own stories that happened last weekend in time order. And learn from the passage, what should be pay attention to while going out, which contains educational function.

Reflection: This passage is a narrative. In teaching design, teacher try to find out the education meaning in it and achieve the goal of combining language learning with curriculum education. In this lesson, students start with real events, to attract students’ attention, and know the danger of being outside; then to the passage, learning language points and expression, and understand the passage in details; and finally, it goes bake to the real life, students will understand the significance of protecting themselves in the outside and put it into action. Through learning this passage, teacher tries to arise students’ awareness to protect their safety in the outside, and learn to tell the story in time order. And students gained knowledge, and improved ability through it. Teacher also pays attention to the learning effect, putting “integration of teaching evaluation” into action.
