Amy was taking her first art class at school. She was very excited.
The art teacher, Mrs. Williams, told the children to 1 the flowers in a vase at the front of the class.
“Don’t worry if your painting doesn’t look 2 like the painting by the person next to you,” she said. “The important thing is to paint what you see.”
Amy worked very hard. She spent so long painting that her hand began to hurt from holding the brush. She put the brush down for a moment to rest and looked at the painting next to hers.
“That’s really good,” she said to Gina. Gina’s painting was small and tidy. Every flower was just like the real flowers in the vase.
“Thanks,” said Gina. She looked over at Amy’s painting. “Oh! What happened to yours ”
“What do you 3 ” asked Amy. She looked at her own painting. It was very different from Gina’s. It covered the whole page and the colors were brighter than the real flowers.
“It looks like a big 4 ,” said Gina. “Did you pour the paint ”
“No.” said Amy, 5 . “I painted what I saw, just like Mrs. Williams said.” “It’s OK, you know,” said Gina. “Not everyone is good at art.”

“Maybe not to you, Gina. Everyone sees different things when they look at the world.” She showed them a picture in a painting book. “This is a picture an artist painted of his own face. This is 8 he saw himself.”
“But...but... it’s just a few lines,” said Gina. “It doesn’t look anything like a real person.”
Mrs. Williams 9 to Amy, “You should read this book, Amy. There are a lot of different kinds of paintings and one isn’t better than the other.”
That evening, Amy read all about the famous artists. Some of their paintings were very 10 , but she liked to look at them all.

Meeting Anne
Matthew Cuthbert was on his way to Bright River on his horse and carriage. He was a quiet man who didn’t speak much, especially to strangers. So, he enjoyed the journey and the smell of the apple trees in silence. He reached Bright River but there was no sign of the 5:30 train which he’d come for. Matthew asked the station manager if it would come soon.
“It came half an hour ago,” answered the manager. “There was one passenger. She’s sitting over there.”
“I don’t understand. I’m not expecting a girl,” said Matthew. “It’s a boy that I’ve come for.” “Guess there’s some mistake,” he said. “Talk to the girl. ________ That’s for sure.” Matthew looked at her. She wore an old brown hat which covered two braids of very long, thick, red hair. Her face was small and thin with lots of freckles(雀斑). Her big green eyes looked back at him.
Matthew began walking over but as soon as she saw him walking her way, she started the conversation.
“I suppose you’re Mr. Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables ” she said in a clear, sweet voice. “I’m Anne, I’m so glad to see you. I was afraid you weren’t coming and I was imagining all the things that might have happened to you. If you didn’t come for me tonight, I made up my mind to go down the road to that cherry tree at the comer, climb up it and stay all night. I wouldn’t be afraid and it would be lovely to sleep in a wild cherry tree all white at night, don’t you think ”
This girl was different.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said shyly. “Come on. Give me your bag.”
As they rode home, Anne talked on and on. Normally, too much talking would make Matthew angry, but from Anne, he didn’t mind. She apologized but Matthew didn’t want her to stop.
“Oh, you can talk as much as you like. I don’t mind,” said Matthew.
“Oh, I’m so glad. I know you and I are going to get along fine.”

The latest sports craze is not even a sport. According to a recent article, "e - sports" are attracting a large number of audience.
In e-sports, players and teams compete in popular video computer games such as Dota 2 and Ovenvatch. Fans fill arenas (竞技场) to watch the action live on huge television screens.
The games have gone way. past kids playing against each other while sitting on a sofa at home. The International, a major competition for players of Dota 2, awarded $24 million in prizes, with the winner taking home almost $11 million. A recent e-sports competition attracted more than 80, 000 fans to the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, China.
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of computer games. I know that some games can be educational, but I think too many kids spend too much time sitting in front of a screen shooting space aliens. I think it would be better if kids spent more time reading or playing real sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer.
And please don't tell me that competitive gaming is real sport because it requires hand - eye coordination(协调). "According to my American Heritage Dictionary, a sport is "an activity involving physical effort and skill. "I don't think. anyone works up much of a sweat (汗水) playing video games.
Too often, regular sports send kids a kind of petition starts early, when lots of kids are not ready for the ups and downs of games. Trails and travel teams come next, giving too many kids the message they are "not good" at sports. So lots of kids give up sports and start playing more video games.
Maybe everyone in youth sports, including coaches, parents and kids, should think more about the advantages of real sports.
( )7. What are "e - sports" according to the text
A. Sports events on television screens. B. Easy sports games for kids.
C. Video computer game competitions. D. The latest sports in the Olympics.
( )8. What might the author think of "e-sports"
A. They are not instructive(有益的). B. They need too much time and money.
C. They should be banned(禁止) in school. D. They have some negative(消极的) influence on children.
( )9. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce a new kind of sport.
B. To introduce a competition held in Beijing.
C. To explain the importance of playing sports.
D. To call on people to pay more attention to traditional sports.
( )10. Where is this text most likely from
A. A guidebook. B. A magazine. C. A novel. D. An advertisement.

五、阅读短文回答问题
Do you put up your hand when you want to speak in class If so, you have followed a rule. Rules can be as simple as putting up your hand. They can also be as complicated(复杂的) as knowing when you are “out” in a game.
Rules can be made by anyone. Parents make rules to help children grow up healthily. Rules at home might include washing dishes or cleaning rooms.
Teachers make rules to help students learn and stay safe. Putting up your hand before asking a question helps the class pay attention to the lesson. Students make rules in games to make sure that they can play without fighting. Rules can be changed often. If you change your minds, you can change the rules.
Laws are rules too, but they are made differently. Laws are made by elected representatives(被选出的代表). Voters(选民) allow their representatives to make laws that can protect people’s rights, safety and make sure everyone can be treated fairly. Laws cannot be changed often, so representatives consider laws carefully before making new ones.
The biggest difference between rules and laws is the punishment(处罚) for breaking them. If you break a rule, your punishment might be small, like losing a turn in a game. However, if a person breaks an important law, the punishment might be a fine(罚款) or time in prison.
Rules and laws keep everyone safe. People can work and live together in peace by following rules and laws.
