铁人三项运动(Triathlon)是体育运动项目之一,在夏威夷诞生,属于新兴综合性运动竞赛项目。比赛由天然水域游泳、公路自行车、公路长跑三项目按顺序组成,运动员需要一鼓作气赛完全程。
2000年成为奥运会项目,2006年成为亚运会项目。
游泳是三项赛的第一项,在悉尼奥运会上设置了一座浮桥,运动员们从浮桥上同时跳水出发。他们要沿着由浮标和绳索标志出的三角形路线前进,如果有人抄近道就会受到处罚。运动员可以用他们喜欢的任何姿势游泳,但实际上所有的运动员都选择自由泳。

从水里上岸后,运动员要马上转入自行车的赛程。在自行车赛段中,整个赛程必须骑自行车完成。运动员必须佩带头盔,还要穿骑行服。自行车一定要按照规定规格制作,除非运动员的身材太高或者太矮可以例外。铁人三项用自行车为最大减少选手风阻,将座位角度增加,重心前移,同时带有休息把。至少要在赛前24小时要检查车辆,以便留出时间让运动员按照规则要求做出必要的修正。

长跑赛段最重要的规则就是运动员必须用自己的双脚完成全部比赛。这一条听起来显而易见,但是在一些令人难忘的铁人三项比赛中,尤其是最艰苦的夏威夷铁人三项赛中,有一次美国选手朱丽·摩斯最后就是爬过终点线的。这种情况不能在奥运会上发生。
