The opening lines of the song “Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and auld long syne ” mean we should have a drink to remember whatever is passing, and remember old friends. Lots of kids have been trying to find ways to help save the Earth. Some of them are encouraged by the “30 by 30” plan: Fifty countries have promised to protect 30% of Earth’s land and waters by 2030.
One of the kids is 11-year-old Beckett from Georgetown, Texas. He wants to help protect endangered species (物种). In 2019, he began working with Rainforest Trust. “I was really interested in trying to stop climate (气候) change,” he said.
With the help of his schoolmates, Beckett has started a group called Protection of Earth. The group organized a local Run and raised more than $700. The money helped to save more than 1,000 acres (英亩) of rainforest land. When the COVID-19 came, Beckett put together an online activity called Trivia: People could test their knowledge of birds, endangered species, and climate change. That raised $600 for rainforest land.
In Los Angeles, California, 10-year-old Justin is worried about frogs. Justin calls them “magical, because they come in different colors.” Last year he joined Rainforest Trust to help Ecuador’s rainforest and its frogs. He appeared on local TV news, and many people learned about what he had done. That helped him raise $2,000 to save almost three acres of Cloud Forest.

My mom’s life was a busy one. Raising four kids on her own was a full time job in itself, but she also worked outside the home. Surprisingly, she always seemed to find a little bit of extra time for us.
She would take us over to my aunt’s in the evening when she worked as a waitress in a small restaurant. I thought she would pass us over to our aunt and hurry off as soon as we made it through the front gate, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we would sit on the porch (门廊), my mom in her waitress uniform, and we would rock in my aunt’s big wooden swing (秋千) and talk about what happened that day.
“I learned how to add numbers up to the hundreds,” my sister Sandy would say.
“That’s wonderful,” my mom would reply, holding her tight.
“I learned how to write my name!” Larry, my younger brother, would shout.
My mom would get a piece of paper and a pencil out of her purse and hand it to my brother. “Show me how you do it,” she’d ask softly.
“Do you have enough time to hear what I did today ” I’d ask her.
Mom would smile at me and nod. “I’m never too busy for something important like that!”
She gave us the gift of time again and again throughout the years. Later on in her life, when she came to live with us after her retirement(退休), my mom gave the gift of time to my children too. They would run around excitedly, asking their grandma if she would play with them, or read them a story, or go for a walk with them. By then my mom had health problems, but she would always nod and sit down and read to them or tell them stories about when she was a little girl. Those moments were a wonderful gift that my children still talk about and treasure.
In the last few years of her life, I would take her to lunch or sit with her on the porch, and we would talk about the past, the dream of the future, and just enjoy being with each other. My mom would listen as I shared all of my hopes, my fears, and my dreams for my family. I would look at her and ask her if she minded me taking up so much of her free time.
“Nonsense (胡说)” she’d tell me. Then she’d give me a wink and say, “I’m never too busy to spend time with you. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.”
I will always remember those wonderful words and the loving heart behind them. It is a gift my mom gave to me for which I will forever be grateful. In this busy world of ours, and in a life filled with challenges, she always had time to share her joy with me.

Stepping into a bookstore, you might notice shelves labelled (标注着) “self-help”. You may not know what these books are about. In fact, more people are turning to self-help books for advice these days. You can’t imagine (想象) that sales of these books in the UK reached about three million last year.
Self-help books are usually written by some famous writers, psychologists (心理学家) or successful businessmen. They teach you what to do when you have problems in your life—for example, how to get along with your classmates or coworkers, how to manage your time well or how to find happiness.
Paul Sweetman, the owner of City Books in the UK, said the social environment might be one reason why more people are reading self-help books. Recently, the social environment has become more and more stressful (有压力的) . “Some people come into the bookstore because they’re really tired of things. They’re looking for something relaxing to calm themselves,” Paul said. Besides, younger readers—such as people born after 2000—seem to understand their own problems better, according to British psychologist Caroline Beaton. This means they’re more willing to improve themselves by reading self-help books.
Self-help books were something people laughed at in the past. Many people didn’t take chicken soup stories or “success theory” books seriously. But now they’re becoming increasingly attractive (有吸引力的) to people.
From my point of view, whatever the reason for the growing interest in self-help books is, it’s good to know that help is at hand if we need it. But do these books truly help us Read one and find out.
