Spanish language schools in Puerto Rico
Fittingly known as the “Island of Enchantment”, Puerto Rico is straight out of a Caribbean daydream. Among endless beaches, travelers are offered an unmatched chance to learn Spanish while bathed in the beautiful sunshine!
Course types
University courses
University-based language courses offer travelers the most structured linguistics program, combining (结合) classroom instruction and group tours with homestay experiences. Though an intermediate (中等的) level of Spanish is often required, travelers are afforded the opportunity to gain academic credit and work alongside their peers.
Group programs
Independent language schools, though often more expensive than university-based courses, afford students across all linguistic levels the opportunity to take part in a study abroad program. From long-stay programs to certification (认证) courses, travelers may undertake specialized classes based on their individual language needs.
Private instruction
Private instruction offers the most flexibility (灵活性) to travelers looking to combine education with fun, with classes offered alongside additional studies. Private instruction in Puerto Rico won’t break the bank, costing as little as $15 per hour!
Planning your trip
Requirements
There are no passports or visas necessary for United States citizens. However, for citizens of other countries, requirements are the same as those for entering the U.S.A 90-day “visitor” visa is available, although students traveling for cultural exchange purposes, such as university study or temporary work, must apply for specialized visas.
Costs of living in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a good place for travelers who are worried about spending too much. Generally, you can find a meal for $12, take public transportation for $1.50 one-way, and pay $650 in rent each month for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center.

A. They are cheaper. B. They arc mainly for U.S. citizens.
C. They involve homestay experiences. D. They offer classes to people at all levels.
22. What can we learn about Puerto Rico
A. It is popular with young job hunters. B. It is famous for its modern buildings.
C. It is a great place for learning French. D. It is visa-free for Americans.
23. What is the type of the text
A. An advertisement. B. An announcement.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting at a picnic table with my wife, Joanne, outside Scotty’s Bierwerks in Cape Coral. We were having a drink when a car pulled up near the entrance of the brewery (啤酒厂).
The doors opened and out came whom I believed to be a family of three—a mother, father and daughter. They appeared to be the entertainment for the evening. Quickly, the man and the woman began constructing a singing set in the parking lot. They positioned a guitar and a microphone (麦克风). It was a hot evening, but the man and the woman meticulously (一丝不苟地) set up the equipment.
Meanwhile, the daughter stood behind the SUV. She wasn’t helping. She was on her phone and looked to be texting. I thought to myself, “Why doesn’t she help her parents carry the equipment ” I immediately did what I should never do: formed an opinion of this girl. She proved me so wrong when I had her in my office a few days later to talk about her story: a 9-year-old playing a small guitar who later performed with popular singers Scotty McCreery and Scotty Williams, and has written over 60 songs.
That night at the brewery, 16-year-old Ayla Lynn Mayo was not helping her parents set up her equipment because her parents didn’t want her to. They have a specific way of doing things and she is not needed. She was on the phone texting people to come to hear her perform. That’s how entertainers build an audience. It’s not so much her singing gift that impressed me. It’s who she is as a person. She is grounded and patient. “I am holding myself back,” she said. “I want to finish school first.”
Life in the music business is not easy. It won’t be easy for Ayla. But she has plenty of family support, a great voice, and the ability to write music. She has a chance and she has already proven me wrong. Don’t be too influenced by first impressions. It’s the second impression: that may delightfully surprise you.
24. What did the author find out about the couple after they got out of the ear
A. They were good at entertaining. B. They came to be entertained.
C. They were very poorly organized. D. They carefully prepared for a performance.
25. What impression did the girl most probably leave on the author at first
A. She was a good helper. B. She was quite lazy and selfish.
C. She was an unpopular performer. D. She was skillful at advertising.
26. What might the author think of Ayla after talking to her
A. She didn’t really understand her parents.
B. She didn’t have a happy childhood.
C. She was a clear-headed singer.
D. She was a good money maker.
27. What lesson can we learn from the author’s story
A. We should leave a good first impression on others.
B. We should never judge people by their appearance.
C. Our second impression of others can even be wrong.
D. Our first impression of someone may not be reliable.
C
There are a number of animals that glow (发光) in some way. But plants don’t glow. Now, scientists are working to change that.
Fireflies and other bioluminescent (生物性发光的) creatures light up thanks to luciferins (荧光素) inside their bodies. Luciferins cause a chemical reaction that gives off light. Plants don’t naturally have luciferins, so there are no naturally bioluminescent plants. But that hasn’t stopped scientists from trying to create them.
In the past, scientists have also created glowing plants by adding luciferins to plants. But it’s a tricky operation and only works as long as the chemicals last. Now, researchers at a Russian company called Planta have come up with a new method of creating glowing plants which lasts as long as the plant is alive. Though mushrooms (蘑菇) and plants grow very differently, the scientists focused on an acid (酸) that is found in both plants and mushrooms. By adding certain parts of the DNA from glowing mushrooms to ordinary plants, the scientists were able to create plants that could make their own luciferins using this acid. The scientists reported that the greenish light was about 10 times brighter than in earlier glowing plants. The glow was strong enough to be easily recorded with an ordinary camera, but it didn’t affect the health of the plants.
Younger parts of the plants glowed more strongly than older parts. The flowers glowed especially brightly. The researchers sometimes noticed the light moving in the plants. They think this may show activity in plants that normally can’t be seen. The glowing also helps show how plants may be affected by things around them. For example, the plants glowed much more strongly when a ripe (熟的) banana skin was nearby.
But the researchers don’t think the plants will just be used for science. They think many people may want glowing plants for their beauty: The scientists have already shown that several common flowers can be made to glow. Planta is working with a company called Light Bio to develop glowing plants to sell.
28. What is the advantage of Planta’s glowing plants
A. They can light up without luciferins.
B. They are healthier and brighter than other plants.
C. They grow faster than earlier glowing plants.
D. They can glow for a long time.
29. Why is the banana skin mentioned in the text
A. To introduce a glowing banana.
B. To prove light moves in the plants.
C. To show some value of glowing plants.
D. To explain how to make plants glow strongly.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Glowing plants will be used in different ways.
B. Planta is making an effort to create easy-to-grow flowers.
C. Light Bio has made a large amount of money from glowing plants.
D. Scientists are uncertain about creating new kinds of flowers.
31. What would be the best title for the text
A. Benefits of glowing flowers B. Scientists create glowing plants
C. Changes in glowing mushrooms’ light D. Researchers find out why plants glow

Outdoor or nature-based preschools have spread greatly in recent years, from just a handful of programs a decade ago to more than 400 across the country today. And they are coming to Washington. Into the Forest is one example. It is an outdoor learning center and preschool in Spokane Valley. Co-owners Megan Benedict and Chelsey Converse have both worked in traditional preschool settings for years, but they wanted to try something different. “We bring all of our work outside that we usually do inside,” Converse said. “Whatever we could’ve done in there, we just bring it out and have fun out here.
Converse says the kids spend at least 50 percent of their time outdoors as opposed to sitting inside at a desk. The center gives kids the opportunity to learn through nature hikes, wilderness training, playtime with natural objects and plenty of outdoor time.
Benedict says Into the Forest aims to help kids learn to handle problems and challenges by giving them real-world experience. “It‘s about what children learn about themselves from being outside,” Benedict said. “It’s helping them to think, to find their way around and figure out their feelings about changing situations. It’s helping them to be resilient.”
Jenna Alfrey says her 4-year -old son Kingston has Down’s syndrome (唐氏综合征) and faces challenges in a traditional setting. She says Into the Forest gives him opportunities he might not have somewhere else. “There was just no doubt that he would be included in his age group,” Alfrey said.
Benedict and Converse say Into the Forest has both an indoor and outdoor area, and is licensed (许可) as a childcare center. The pair is also interested in starting centers that are fully outdoors. Into the Forest is part of Washington’s outdoor preschool pilot program, which is working out licensing requirements necessary for all-day, fully outdoor preschools. Right now, such centers can only run for four hours at a time.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. Into the Forest is a traditional school.
B. Outdoor programs meet various challenges.
C. Into the Forest is illegal in Washington.
D. Outdoor preschools are growing in popularity.
33. What does the underlined word “resilient” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Proud. B. Adaptable. C. Careful. D. Intelligent.
34. How did Alfrey feel about Into the Forest
A. She regarded it as unexpected. B. She regarded it as fruitless.
C. She was excited about it. D. She was curious about it.
35. What can we infer about Benedict and Converse from the last paragraph
A. They will help their school get licensed.
B. They will limit Into the Forest’s outdoor time.
C. They are trying to open fully outdoor centers.
D. They are asking the government to start outdoor programs.

New animal species
We share the Earth with millions of animal species. 36 Some are small, like some organisms (微生物) that live in the ocean. However, although the Earth has millions of animal species, many are endangered. Scientists are trying to save endangered animals, but surprisingly, they are also finding new species.
In a South American rainforest, 60 new species of animals were found in 2012. Scientists say the reason so many new kinds of animals were found there is that this rainforest was almost untouched by humans. Six new species of frogs were discovered at this time. 37 Scientists named one new frog the cocoa frog because of the color of its skin. The cocoa frog lives in the tall trees in this rainforest.
38 A new shark was discovered in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of South Carolina. The new shark, called the Carolina hammerhead (锤头鲨), looks like a hammerhead shark, but it has fewer bones. A new kind of small ocean creature was also discovered in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast near California. The creature looks like a see-through shrimp (虾), and it is only 3.3 millimeters long. In Turkey, scientists have found a new species of wood scorpion (木蝎). 39 The new scorpion, though, lives in humid (湿热的) environments and hides under rocks. It is small and mostly harmless to humans.
When so many animal species are becoming endangered, finding new ones is exciting. 40 Many animals—both known and unknown—may contribute to the Earth in ways science doesn’t even understand yet.
A. Some are huge, like elephants.
B. There are steps that people can take to protect animals.
C. New kinds of animals are also being found in the oceans.
D. Some scientists offer classes on studying new animal species.
E. However, scientists are continuing to try to save endangered animals.
F. Scorpions are poisonous animals that usually live in dry environments.
G. This is particularly important because frogs around the world are dying out.
