In most cultures, when you meet people you know for the first time during a day,it is usual to greet them.Once a young woman from England went to Hong Kong to work. When she first arrived, she knew little about the Chinese culture of language. On her way to school one day,she went to a bank to get some money. To her surprise, the bank clerk asked her if she had had her lunch. She was surprised at such a question because in the British culture it would mean an invitation to lunch.Between unmarried young people it can also mean the young man's interest in dating (和...约会) the girl.Since this bank clerk was a stranger to the British woman, she was very puzzled(困惑的), and quickly answered that she had eaten already. After this she went on to school and was even more surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question.

When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage(行李), but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment(难堪) in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and told me about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the word “old”. I then walked back to the table and said sorry to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire(退休) or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercise or jogging, and women put on makeup(化妆), hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them.
( )61. Jack brought the couple their food very fast because _______.
A. the manager asked him to do so B. he respected the elderly
C. the couple wanted him to do so D. he wanted more pay
( )62. When Jack called the couple “elderly”, they became _______.
A. nervous B. satisfied C. unhappy D. excited
( )63. In Jack’s hometown, _______.
A. people dislike being called “old” B. people are proud of being old
C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
( )64 After this experience, Jack _______.
A. lost his job in the restaurant B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the elderly D. changed his way with older people
( )65. Which of the following is TRUE
A. The more Jack explained, the angrier the couple got.
B. Jack wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience.
C. The manager went back to the table and paid for the couple.
D. From this experience, Jack learned more about American culture.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she would say again, “it’s for Elizabeth. ”
I never saw her be angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me—she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”.
As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive(原谅)me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment(失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折叠)and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

Five Tricks to Make Your Memory Better
Remembering things, like names, dates, and other fine details is just like playing basketball. It’s also a skill that we can practice. The five memory tricks below can help train your memory.
Imagine (想象) what you want to take before you get it
When walking into another room or passing through a doorway, something changes our short-term (短期的) memory and makes us forget what we went there for. Think about your purpose before you leave the present room, you’ll increase (增加) your chances of remembering what you want.
Learn the chunking technique (组块技术)
We can only remember a small number of things for a short time—about four to seven different items. The chunking technique is helpful for us to get past this limitation(限制). We can group some items into a larger whole, then we can remember a large number of things at a time..
Make good use of the power of music
We forget names and numbers so easily, except our favorite songs or nursery rhymes (儿歌) from childhood. Music helps us remember things well. If you want to learn a foreign language, try training with music videos with words of this language. In a word, singing can help us remember things.
Create (创造) mnemonic pegs (助记符) to remember long lists
Even without the music background, you can use rhyme to remember things like shopping lists. You can build a connection (联系) between the items and the things that rhyme. For example, 1 rhymes with a gun, 2 rhymes with a shoe, and so on.
Take care of your health and learn new skills
Sadly, our memory falls as we get older. Taking care of our basic health, though, can help you brain work in a proper way. That means exercising and staying fit, and keeping your brain healthy too by learning new skills.
