Language points
1. I was trying to pick it up when it bit me again. 我正试图捡起它，这时它又咬了我一口。
　pick up意为“捡起；拾起；拿起”。
He picked up his white hat and went away. 他拿起自己的白色的帽子走了。
[拓展]
pick up还可表示“开车去接某人”。
I will pick up my cousin at the airport this afternoon.今天下午我将去机场接我的表妹。
[注意]
pick up是“动词+副词”型短语，名词作宾语时，放在up前后均可；代词作宾语时，必须放在up之前。

2．As the doctors were checking him, the pain got worse. 医生给他做检查时，疼痛加剧了。
(1) as此处用作连词，意为“当……的时候”，引导时间状语从句，强调主句与从句的动作同时进行之中。

[拓展]as的其他常见用法：
①as作介词，意为“作为”。

②as作连词，意为“正如”。

(2) get worse意为“变得更糟糕”，get 作连系动词，意为“达到；进入（某种状态）”，后接形容词作表语。
The situation was getting worse and worse.

3．As he was there in great pain, Henry suddenly remembered the photo. 当亨利躺在那儿处于巨大的痛苦中时，他忽然想起了那张照片。
pain此处作不可数名词，意为“痛；疼痛”。in pain意为“处于疼痛中”。
Tom fell off his bike and was in great pain.
汤姆从自行车上摔了下来，疼得厉害。
[拓展]pain作可数名词，表示可指肉体上的疼痛，也可指精神或感情上的悲痛。have a pain in one’s back / shoulder表示“背痛/肩痛”。
My father went to bed early because he had a pain in his back.
由于背痛，我父亲早早地去睡觉了。
4．As soon as they learnt what kind of snake bit him, they gave Henry the right medicine…他们一知道哪种 蛇咬了他，就给亨利用了合适的药……
(1)as soon as意为“一……就……”，引导时间状语从句。注意：如果主句是一般将来时，那么as soon as引导的从句通常用一般现在时表将来。

(2) medicine不可数名词，意为“药；药物”。take medicine意为“吃药”。
Please take the medicine three times a day.

One day when a woman was getting dinner ready for the animals at a zoo, her hand began to hurt. A few days earlier, a box of spiders arrived at the zoo from Asia. When she put the box into the spiders’ display, one of them climbed out and ran across the table. While she was trying to pick up the spider and put it back in the box, it bit her hand.
She forgot about her pain and continued with her work. She finished giving dinner to the animals, but the pain in her hand got worse. So she hurried to hospital. As soon as the doctor got to know what kind of spider it was, he gave the woman the right medicine. She left the hospital that evening.
