I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.
Just at this moment she went back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get to the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got to the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.
1. The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw ________.
A. the calf was about to fall into the river
B. Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rock
C. the calf was washed away by the rising water
D. Ma Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water
2. How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water
A. By putting it on a safe spot. B. By pressing it against her body.
C. By taking it away with her. D. By carrying it on her back.
3. How did the calf feel about the mother elephant’s roaring
A. It was a musical note. B. It was a sign of danger.
C. It was a call for help. D. It was a great comfort.

What Is Social Media
Not many people ask the question “what is social media ” anymore. Social media has been around for years now, and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other stuff.
But let me ask you this: what exactly is so “social” about sitting before a computer setting up a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it, or scrolling through your Facebook feed of information from 500 friends you barely know If you ask me, it can be way more anti-social than anything.
Social media is not a “thing”. It’s not just Facebook, WeChat and Weibo It’s more of a frame of mind and a state of being. It’s about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However, we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually tear apart those relationships.
Social media isn’t about numbers. When someone says “social media,” web giants like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos, more everything. We tend to get distracted by the number game, thinking “volume, volume, volume”. It’s led to a lot of meaningless noise and information overload. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go. So, social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly pushing around lots of information.
Social media needs to have an “IRL” factor-an Internet slang standing for “In Real Life”. It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn’t be an end in itself. It was built to enhance your actual social life, in real life. Take for example an event that a person attends because they are invited by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page. Something like that definitely has the IRL factor. Likewise, a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
So, is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists. Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It’s all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.

A. a number of websites where people communicate
B. a set of social tools like Facebook. WeChat and Weibo

6. According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor
A. Updating Facebook on a regular basis.
B. Following new friends in real life on Facebook.
C. Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo.
D. Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about.

Benito Juarez, a poor Indian boy, was twelve years old when he left his village home in December 1818. Benito walked forty-one miles to the city of Oaxaca, high in the mountains of Mexico. When he heard the Spanish spoken by the city people, Benito didn’t know what they were saying.
First, Benito became a servant for a wealthy gentleman, Serer Maza. Soon, he went to work for Antonio Salanueva , a church(教会) librarian. Antonio repaired and copied the library books, keeping them in good shape. Benito became his helper and his housekeeper. Antonio loved to teach. Benito soon became his student as well as his servant. With the help of Antonio, Benito learned to speak, read, and write Spanish.
At that time in Mexico, many people believed that Indians were not smart enough to read or learn. Antonio knew that was not true. Indians had been prevented from learning by a lack of schools. The first Spanish missionaries(传教士)who came to Mexico had educated the native people. In fact, churches from Spain had built the first college on the North American continent(大陆)for the Indians. As more Spanish came to Mexico, however, the Indian children were crowded out of the schools.
Benito was a good and bright student, so Antonio developed a plan for him. In 1821, when Benito was fifteen, Antonio decided to enroll him in a school for boys. Antonio taught Benito what he needed to pass the entrance test for the school.
Benito became a student at the college. His studies were difficult, and he was teased because he was the only Indian student there. He succeeded in spite of these challenges. Later, as the laws changed, Benito was able to attend a public college with other Indians.
Benito Juarez continued his education and became a lawyer and, much later, the President of Mexico from 1861 to 1872. He led the Mexican people to victory over the French, who tried to rule Mexico, and fought for the rights of Indians. He is one of the great heroes in Mexican history.

Last night my husband and I were taking a post-dinner walk in a nearby parking lot, when we saw a man bent over on the ground, crushing (压碎) something with a rock. He was completely focused on his task and didn’t look up at anyone passing by. We kept noticing him as we walked around the parking lot and talked between ourselves about what he might be doing. I thought he was breaking stones to make sand, but why would he do that
Finally we decided to go up and speak to him. He was crushing pieces of leftover bread that he had collected from all his housemates to make food for the birds that came there every morning. The large pieces of bread would be difficult for the birds to eat so he crushed them into a fine powder.
He’s been doing this every night, by himself, for the last 3-4 years. What moved us more was that he was surprised we were even taking an interest in this, since for him it wasn’t a big deal. Every night, after reaching his single room from his job as a tailor, he goes around the villa (别墅) collecting leftover bread from all his housemates. He then eats a quick meal and comes here, and spends the next 1-2 hours, carefully crushing each piece and makes a pile for the birds, which he says will be gone by next evening. He also leaves fresh water and adds rice on top of the pile, which he buys every month from his wages.
When we asked him why he did this small and simple act of service, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “It’s just something small I do; so that the leftover bread doesn’t go into the trash and the birds get food.”
We shared his story with the hope that it might remind us to be as mindful of leftovers too and perhaps it might inspire someone to start something similar in their own area.
12. The man didn’t notice the author and her husband because ________.
A. he didn’t want to get to know them
B. he didn’t like greeting the strangers
C. he fixed his energy on what he was doing
D. he liked seeing the people in the parking lot
13. Why did the man make the bread into pieces
A. Because he wanted to attract others.
B. Because he liked making such bread.
C. Because the bread is too bad to eat.
D. Because the bread is too large for the birds to eat.
14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. An unusual experience of a tailor.
B. A surprising event and an imaginary person.
C. How the man found the birds coming here.
D. How the man collected and made food for the birds.
15. What can we learn from the man’s story
A The man is an honest person.
B. The man is a kind and loving person.
C The man is an interesting person.
D. The man is a special and determined person.

Out of a 13-year-old girl’s summer boredom, I put up a tent in our yard and intended to sleep in it. It was midnight and my dad had been asleep upstairs. A girl knocked on the front door, asking if she could use our phone to call her parents.
I watched her struggle to dial the numbers. After she dialed the wrong numbers several times, I offered to do that for her. But after I dialed several times, there still no people answered the phone. Looking at the girl, I said, “Want to sleep in my tent ” She hesitated for a while and agreed.
I accompanied her into the darkness of the yard, entered the tent, and turned my lantern on. She told me how she got here. She and her parents had a nice dinner. After dinner, she expressed she wanted a beautiful dress in a special style, but it was too expressive for her parents. They argued fiercely(激烈地)and she left in anger. She wandered alone aimlessly(漫无目的地)until she found herself on an unfamiliar road. Her cellphone was in her parent’s bag and she seemed to have got lost. She wiped her eyes with my pillow, looked at me sadly, and then said, “Why didn’t my parents buy that dress for me ”
I knew just nodding obviously couldn’t solve the problem. “Do you think your parents love you ” I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, “My parents always meet my request as far as possible. This is my fault to ask them to buy that dress which they can’t afford. ” At the time, my phone rang. It turned out her parents’ call. Her parents sounded very worried and said they would come very soon. Then, my dad walked down the stairs.

I knew just nodding obviously couldn’t solve the problem. “Do you think your parents love you ” I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, “My parents always meet my request as far as possible. The girl said, “My friend’s father also promised me to make that dress for me, but I now don’t want that dress. I know we should do things within our reach and don’t take other’s love for granted.”
