The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance (救护车) in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T- shirt.
I knew we were already watching our“last runner' . Her feet turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.
The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we' d slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself expecting her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I hoped that she wouldn't.
Finally she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect
and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet she didn't give up and crossed the line.
I don' t know this woman 's name, but that day she became a part of my life- -a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those "I-just-can't-do-it," I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.
24. What does the underlined word“crippled" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Strong. B. Perfect. C. Flexible. D. Disabled.
25. What word can best describe the woman
A. Selfless. B. Determined. C. Generous. D. Considerate.
26. What has the author learnt from the woman
A. Don't depend on others when facing difficulties.
B. Nothing is too hard to accomplish if one is brave enough.
C. It's not winning but holding on straight to the end that really matters.
D. Everybody can run a marathon even if they have some kind of difficulty.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Last Runner
B. An Injured Stranger
C. An Unforgettable Job
D. The Annual Marathon
Flat Holm is a picturesque landmass located in Britain' s Bristol Channel. The area' s low energy needs have therefore been fulilled by using old- fashioned solar panels (太阳能电池板) and diesel generators (柴油发电机). The beautiful island is now, however, becoming increasingly popular with tourists wishing to explore. the rural landscape and view the island' s seabird colonies.
Though this is welcome news, meeting the island's growing energy needs without damaging its environment has been a challenge. Flat Holm team leader Natalie Taylor says,“It's really important that we have a really high functioning system. From an environmental point of view, we want to reduce the use of diesel generators so that we can have as small an ecological footprint as possible.
Fortunately, UK-based startup Renovagen had the perfect solution. The company' s Rapid Roll Solar PV system consists of flexible solar panels that can be unrolled like a carpet from a trailer (拖车) within two minutes and instantly put to work. According to the company, a small panel can provide 11kW of power.
The technology is the brainchild of Renovagen' s Managing Director John Hingley, who came up with the idea after seeing something used as a backup battery for mobile devices about five years ago. In addition to being easy to unfold, the rollable panels are also more cost 一effective to transport. Hingley says,“Compared with traditional rigid panels, we can fit up to 10 times the power in this size container.
The solar panel“carpets",laid on the island in early October, are being used to provide electricity for its pub and lighthouse. In addition to providing power for remote islands like Flat Holm, Hingley hopes the Rapid Roll technology will be useful in areas affected by natural disasters. A good example is Puerto Rico, where most people have been without electricity since Hurricane Maria destroyed the power lines.
28. What leads to Flat Holm' s increasing energy needs
A. The power system failure.
B. Its remote location.
C. The damage to its environment.
D. Its growing number of tourists.
29. Where does the difficulty lie to increase energy supply to Flat Holm
A. Reusing diesel generators.
B. Protecting its environment
C. Abandoning old solar panels.
D. Reducing the transport cost.
30. How do the new solar panels differ from the old ones
A. They cost less.
B. They contain more power.
C. They are smaller.
D. They are hard to transport.
31. What gave Hingley inspiration of the Rapid Roll technology
A. A similar invention.
B. A natural disaster.
C. His life on the island.
D. Traditional rigid panels.

You never know how big an impact you are making in someone's life. At 1:00 am, on Saturday, August 25,2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston, Texas. Before this, my family was preparing for flooding, packing food, first aid kits, and planning for the worst. While taking our cats and rabbits upstairs, my friend Tom called and explained their dilemma (窘境). Their area was issued a mandatory evacuation (强制疏散) and they had to leave.
With no place to stay, they were on the way to our house. All seven of them, 5 kids, including a newborn came in. Together we prepared their rooms and let them settle in.
After dinner, we turned on the news and saw Harvey coming in. That night none of us could sleep, listening to the wind blowing and rain thundering down. The four- year- -old told me, carrying the cat, “Saira, the kitty is scared. Can you make the rain stop, please " With a forced smile, I helped her to bed and let the cat sleep with her. When we stepped out the next morning, we saw the nearby lake completely full of water, which was an amazing yet scary sight. Tom went a lite further down and came back wet and explained that there was no way they could return home. They ended up slaying that day and planned on leaving the next morning.
The next morning,he news reported how jammed (堵塞的) and flooded the roads were in his community. With tears and worried faces, they stayed for a week.
