The Secret Garden By Frances Hodgson Burnett Price:¥17.5
Reviews:
This book is considered to be a classic of English children’s literature. It is
still read and loved by many children today, even though it is over 100 years. From
the book, we know that friendship is very important during our growth. People
can’t always live in the past, we should look forward.
8th Best seller
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer By Mark Twain Price:¥14
Reviews:
The book would be an enjoyable read for people of all ages. He wrote it in
about 1835. It was not published until a year later. What makes the story great is
that Tom Sawyer stands for everything that is great about childhood. I highly
recommend it for anyone looking to feel young again. During Tom’s adventure he
met with difficulties, but he didn’t lose heart. It talks about freedom, social rules
and how people are punished for bad behaviour.
5th Best seller
Little Women By Louisa May Alcott Price:¥25
Reviews:
The novel follows the lives of the four March sisters-- Meg, Jo, Beth and
Amy. The main theme in the story is the importance of family, the need to work
and self-improvement. It is so educational that I know we should follow our heart
to realize what we want to be and fight for dreams.

Every winter, Siberian cranes move from northeast Siberia in Russia to Po yang Lake in Jiangxi
province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has
endangered the birds’ living areas.
“In some years, the Po yang Lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts (without
rain for long). Both of these make the cranes be short of food.” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National
Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70,000 square meters of lotus roots in
Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The number of the cranes has risen from about
3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect the birds and wetlands. Known as the “Earth’s
kidnegys ”, wetlands play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity(生
物多样性). The Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on
important national wetlands and stops activities such as overgrazing(过度放牧)and giving out wastewater.
Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands. In February,
black-faced spoonbills, an endangered species, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for
five years. Last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more
than 2,900 tundra swans up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.

After a whole week of rain, we finally had a comfortable, beautiful summer day outside. My family
and I were driving to a nearby town when my daughter found a yard sale. We saw old toys and a couple of
guitars. We saw huge piles of clothes and even a piece of furniture or two for sale. ① Best of all, we
saw lots of smiling people talking, laughing, sitting and standing in the sunshine.
② Most of my clothes used to come from yard sales. My mom was a talented yard sale shopper.
I used to hate going to them until one special day when I saw that they also sold old books there. After that,
I always read through the books until it was time to go and sometimes my mom would buy me one too.

④ Why do we have yard sales We deal with our old things and we buy“new”old things. But it
certainly isn’t for the money. It’s that yard sales bring us together. We talk and catch up with old friends
and new neighbors. We connect with kindness and our love for all the old things.
I think yard sales teach us something about life too. We can’t really own anything here, after all. All
we get is to have the thing for a period of time. Then it is time to let it go and pass it on.

Have you ever heard that there is a special fishing team It is made up of human fishermen and
dolphins in the coastal city of Laguna in Brazil. They work together to catch fish.
Mauricio Cantor from Oregon State University, US, studied this partnership(合作关系). As he told
Science News Explores, the cooperation started more than a century ago.
“ The dolphins are good at finding fish in the cloudy water and driving them to the coast,” Cantor said.
“The fishermen are really good at trapping the fish with their nets.” Once the fish are caught in the nets,
dolphins can move in and get some for themselves. By working with dolphins, fishermen catch more fish,
and dolphins are more successful in hunting, too.
Cantor’s study described how fishermen and dolphins give signals(信号) to each other during fishing.
When dolphins find fish, they drive them to the coast. Then they raise their backs in front of the fishermen
to tell them to throw nets. Fishermen will then throw the nets right away, or they may lose the best chance.
Fishermen need to be well-trained to understand the signals from dolphins, said Cantor.
The study found that fishermen are 17 times more likely to catch fish by working with dolphins. At the
same time, cooperative dolphins have 13 percent higher survival rates (存活率)than other dolphins.
Human-animal partnerships have been rare throughout history. But they “ give us an idea of how
active our human interactions can be with nature,” Cantor said.
62. The writer leads in the topic by .
A. making a survey B. telling a story
C. giving an example D. asking a question
63. What’s the meaning of the word “cooperation” in Paragraph 2

Have you ever heard of the“free lunch”program It’s over 10 years since the program started in 201l
at Shaba Primary School in Qianxi, Guizhou Province.
The first group of students who received those early meals have graduated from college. Children now
at the school no longer feel hungry. They chat generously and get confidence in their healthy growth. Their
Putonghua is much better than that of their parents, so they often act as translators for local people.“I’ll
work hard and become a policeman to protect a lot of people in the future,”one child said confidently.
Before the project began, students who lived far away had to either walk back home for lunch or just
skip(跳过)lunch. If they didn’t have lunch, they had to wait to eat at night after finishing a whole day’s
classes on an empty stomach.
Deng Fei is one of the major supporters. With the help of 500 volunteers, he called on the Children
Foundation to carry out the free lunch program in April 2011. In this way, they helped poor children avoid
hunger and grow up healthily.
Today, the project has already expanded from Guizhou to 26 other provinces and areas. Altogether,
more than 240000 children receive healthy and delicious lunches on any given day at 1076 schools across
the country.
Zhang Yan, a supporter of the charitable project, said,“After 10 years, we can see the light of wonder
in the children’s eyes. Their hope is the whole point.”She was moved to tears when she told her stories.

Different countries and people have different manners. Here are some examples. If you visit a
Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you should not move
before the host says “Come in, please.”
Before coming into a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European
countries, even if your shoes are very dirty, this is not done. In Britain, guests always finish the
drink or the food to show that they enjoy it. This will make the host very pleased.

Every winter, Siberian cranes move from northeast Siberia in Russia to Po yang Lake in Jiangxi province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ living areas.
“In some years, the Po yang Lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts (without rain for long). Both of these make the cranes be short of food.” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70,000 square meters of lotus roots in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The number of the cranes has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect the birds and wetlands. Known as the “Earth’s kidnegys ”, wetlands play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity(生物多样性). The Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and stops activities such as overgrazing(过度放牧)and giving out wastewater.
Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands. In February, black-faced spoonbills, an endangered species, were seen wintering at Dongting Lake after disappearing for five years. Last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.

After a whole week of rain, we finally had a comfortable, beautiful summer day outside. My family and I were driving to a nearby town when my daughter found a yard sale. We saw old toys and a couple of guitars. We saw huge piles of clothes and even a piece of furniture or two for sale. ① Best of all, we saw lots of smiling people talking, laughing, sitting and standing in the sunshine.
② Most of my clothes used to come from yard sales. My mom was a talented yard sale shopper. I used to hate going to them until one special day when I saw that they also sold old books there. After that, I always read through the books until it was time to go and sometimes my mom would buy me one too. ③ Soon a large part of my home library came from yard sale books. To me, they were more priceless than new ones.
④ Why do we have yard sales We deal with our old things and we buy“new”old things. But it certainly isn’t for the money. It’s that yard sales bring us together. We talk and catch up with old friends and new neighbors. We connect with kindness and our love for all the old things.
I think yard sales teach us something about life too. We can’t really own anything here, after all. All we get is to have the thing for a period of time. Then it is time to let it go and pass it on.
58. The sentence“Seeing all of this made me think of my childhood.”should be put in ______.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④

D. To show that the things are wonderful or special.
60. What lesson does the writer tell us about the things we own
A. We should keep everything we buy. B. We can own things and never throw away.
C. We need to let go and pass things on. D. We all should remember the past forever.
61. The best title of the passage is Moments to _____.
A. bring us together B. deal with old things
C. find something special D. save a lot of money
D
Have you ever heard that there is a special fishing team It is made up of human fishermen and dolphins in the coastal city of Laguna in Brazil. They work together to catch fish.
Mauricio Cantor from Oregon State University, US, studied this partnership(合作关系). As he told Science News Explores, the cooperation started more than a century ago.
“ The dolphins are good at finding fish in the cloudy water and driving them to the coast,” Cantor said.
“The fishermen are really good at trapping the fish with their nets.” Once the fish are caught in the nets, dolphins can move in and get some for themselves. By working with dolphins, fishermen catch more fish, and dolphins are more successful in hunting, too.
Cantor’s study described how fishermen and dolphins give signals(信号) to each other during fishing. When dolphins find fish, they drive them to the coast. Then they raise their backs in front of the fishermen to tell them to throw nets. Fishermen will then throw the nets right away, or they may lose the best chance. Fishermen need to be well-trained to understand the signals from dolphins, said Cantor.
The study found that fishermen are 17 times more likely to catch fish by working with dolphins. At the same time, cooperative dolphins have 13 percent higher survival rates (存活率)than other dolphins.
Human-animal partnerships have been rare throughout history. But they “ give us an idea of how active our human interactions can be with nature,” Cantor said.
The writer leads in the topic by .

63. What’s the meaning of the word “cooperation” in Paragraph 2

Have you ever heard of the“free lunch”program It’s over 10 years since the program started in 201l at Shaba Primary School in Qianxi, Guizhou Province.
The first group of students who received those early meals have graduated from college. Children now at the school no longer feel hungry. They chat generously and get confidence in their healthy growth. Their Putonghua is much better than that of their parents, so they often act as translators for local people.“I’ll work hard and become a policeman to protect a lot of people in the future,”one child said confidently.
Before the project began, students who lived far away had to either walk back home for lunch or just skip(跳过)lunch. If they didn’t have lunch, they had to wait to eat at night after finishing a whole day’s classes on an empty stomach.
Deng Fei is one of the major supporters. With the help of 500 volunteers, he called on the Children Foundation to carry out the free lunch program in April 2011. In this way, they helped poor children avoid hunger and grow up healthily.
Today, the project has already expanded from Guizhou to 26 other provinces and areas. Altogether, more than 240000 children receive healthy and delicious lunches on any given day at 1076 schools across the country.
Zhang Yan, a supporter of the charitable project, said,“After 10 years, we can see the light of wonder in the children’s eyes. Their hope is the whole point.”She was moved to tears when she told her stories.
