Trees turn orange and yellow in late October. Jia Yongxiang in Longnan, Gansu Province is busy harvesting olives (收获橄榄).
China began to grow olive trees in the 1960s. Longnan has the proper climate and soil (适宜的气候和土壤) conditions for olive trees. It began to grow olive trees in 1975. Now it has become one of the most important olive planting places in China. People call it the “home town of olive in China”.
Jia and many other villagers in Longnan used to live a hard life because the harvest of grain crops (谷类作物) was poor. In 2002, the government encouraged them to plant olive trees. Most villagers thought it was a risk to plant a new kind of tree, but Jia decided to give it a try.
The government provided Jia with young trees and taught him how to take care of (照料) the trees. He spent lots of time on his trees. His hard work finally paid off. In 2008, Jia began to harvest olives and he made about 8,000 yuan that year, higher than what he could make by planting traditional crops. That encouraged many other villagers to plant olive trees. And Jia planted more olive trees. In 2016, he made about 200,000 yuan.
Jia didn't stop there. He set up a cooperative (合作社组织) and provided its members with young trees to grow. “It is very important to help everyone in my village live a good life,” he said.
