Amid growing global condemnation of elephant riding as a tourist activity, Yok Don National Park in southern Vietnam has ended the practice and replaced it with the first ethical (伦理的) elephant experience of its kind in the country.
The formally captive group of four elephants were released from their chains earlier this month and no longer carry tourists on rides through the park. Visitors can instead observe the animals roaming freely in their natural habitat.
The park worked on the initiative with Animal Protection Asia, which campaigns for long-term changes in animal welfare and tourism in Vietnam. The official agreement between the charity and the state-run park was signed on 13 July, and runs until April 2023, with the first tours taking place earlier this month. Over the next five years, it is hoped that the new model will provide as much or even more revenue for owners as riding, and encourage mahouts (管象人) and elephant tourism companies to follow.
This project has entirely changed the lives of the elephants at the park and it also provides a much better experience for the tourists. Misuse has been replaced with respect, and the animals look much healthier and happier than before.
Awareness of the adverse effects of elephant riding has increased in recent years, with a growing number of tourists avoiding cruel attractions and supporting welfare centres and animal protection instead, alongside an increasing number of tour operators refusing to sell elephant treks that include riding.
Many of the elephants used in riding and other activities, such as painting or performing tricks, are caught as babies from the wild, their mothers often killed. Once captured, they typically undergo intensive conditioning known as “crushing the spirit”, where they are kept in tiny pens and beaten and starved, sometimes for weeks. Once trained, many of the animals eventually die from exhaustion. Campaigners and charities hope to continue to educate the industry in Vietnam and around the world, and show how profitable ethical elephant experiences, with retired and rescued animals, can be, instead.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 33 percent of coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are in danger. One of the victims is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the world’s largest coral reef system.
A team of British and Australian scientists banded and came up with a solution to revive one of the world’s seven natural wonders. They used underwater loudspeakers to attract fishes to the dead coral reefs to help them restore. The groundbreaking process is known as “acoustic (声音的) enrichment”.
Loudspeakers are placed on patches of dead corals in the Great Barrier Reef. After careful observation, researchers discovered a favorable result-nearly twice as many fish arrived-and stayed, as compared to parts where there was no sound from speakers.
“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places-the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoop of fish combine to form a biological soundscape. Young fish home in on these sounds when they’re looking for a place to settle.” said Professor Steve Simpson at the University of Exeter.
Reefs become quiet when they are decarded(退化), as the shrimps and fish disappear. “By using loudspeakers to restore this lost soundscape, we can attract young fish back again,” Simpson added. “Fish are crucial for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems…Boosting fish populations in this way could help kick-start natural recovery processes, counteracting(抵消) the damage we’re seeing on many coral reefs around the world.” he said.
Despite this groundbreaking discovery, we still have our work cut out for the preservation of coral reefs. The average water temperatures are rising, and problems such as overfishing and pollution are still among the pressing issues at hand. Also, further research is still needed to understand how loudspeakers influence the behavior of aquatic(水中)creatures fully.
Nevertheless, hope is still visible for the degraded coral reefs. The authors of the acoustic enrichment study remain to be optimistic in the power of music and sound to restore the reef’s abundant marine population.
28.How does “acoustic enrichment” function according to the text
A.By scaring the enemy of fishes. B.By making degraded reefs noisier.
C.By appealing to young fishes. D.By making fishes multiply faster.
29.What does Prof Simpson think of bringing fish back
A.It can help rebuild the coral reefs’ ecosystem.
B.It can benefit the other lives in the ocean.
C.It can make the ocean noisier and cleaner.
D.It can improve the food chains of the ocean.
30.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A.The research has achieved a complete success.
B.It is tough to restore the damaged coral reefs.
C.Global winning is the biggest reason for reef victims.
D.Music and sound benefit endangered animals.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.The threats coral reefs face nowadays B.The world’s biggest coral reef system
C.Various reasons why corals are threatened D.A novel approach to degraded coral reefs

It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight For me, it was.
I started playing the piano when I was four-that was 15 years ago! This was huge commitment, so there must have been something worth holding on to, right
The easy guess is that I was purely in love with music and piano. Although that’s the sweeter tale, it’s a bit more complicated. I struggled a lot with piano. Family and peers were, at least in my own head, constantly placed beside me in competition. I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt. Hate sprouted (滋生) when my self-criticism hit too hard.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. For a while, piano was more of an annoyance than a hobby. But somehow, love grew. It was deeply buried. But it was there, and by high school,it was strong enough that when I was truly on the verge of quitting any kind of formal training. I found the strength to hold on tighter, and dig further. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who helped me tunnel into what I loved. I learned pieces for myself, I composed for myself, and I found confidence not because I got “good enough,” but because I learned that anything I had was good enough.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
32.What does the author want to show by telling a classic story
A.The benefits of music.
B.Kids’ struggle in learning instruments.
C.Kids’ bittersweet childhood.
D.The popularity of learning instruments.
33.What can we know about the author’s experience of playing the piano
A.She finally quit formal training.
B.She never treated it as her hobby.
C.She was in pure love with music and piano.
D.She once experienced great pressure from herself.
34.What helped the author find confidence
A.Her attitude. B.Her training.
C.Her compromise. D.Her achievement.
35.What message is mainly delivered in the passage
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Love is a thing that grows.
C.Content is better than riches.
D.Chance favors the prepared mind.

Bad Dreams Are Good!
Most of us dream, whether we remember them or not. What are dreams for A handful of 41 dominate. Sigmund Freud famously maintained that they reveal hidden truths and wishes. More recent research suggests that they may help us process intense emotions, or perhaps sort through and strengthen memories, or 42 random neuron(神经元) activity, or prepare responses to threatening situations. Others argue that dreams have no evolutionary function, but simply 43 personal concerns.
Despite being largely unsupported by 44 , Freud’s view maintains a strong following around the world. In the same study, respondents said that dreaming about a plane crash would cause them more 46 than an official warning about a terrorist attack. Even if dreams can't foretell the future, they seem to 47 our shared fascinations. The majority of dreams occur during REM sleep (深度睡眠) cycles, of which the average person has four or five a night.
A study of Canadian university students found the most common dream topics include school, falling, being chased, and arriving too late for something. For all the commonalities dreams 48 , they vary across time and culture — people who grew up watching black-and-white TV are more likely to dream in black and white. A 1958 study 49 that compared with Japanese people, Americans dreamed more about being locked up, losing a loved one, finding money, being 50 dressed or encountering a mad person. Japanese people were more likely to dream about school, trying repeatedly to do something, being paralyzed with fear, or “wild, violent beasts.” If human dreams sound 51 , bear in mind that even negative ones can have positive effects.
In a study of students taking a French medical school entrance exam, 60 percent of the dreams they had beforehand 52 a problem with the exam, such as being late or leaving an answer blank. But those who reported 53 about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn’t. So the next time you dream about an education related experience in which you are unable to answer the questions or solve a problem, don’t 54 : It’s probably totally meaningless. Then again, your brain might be practicing so you'll be 55 if such an event ever comes to pass.

I’ll never forget that hot and windy day when I passed my driving test. The instructor just told me that I passed and he was talking to me about my test as I was full of smiles. I looked over at my dad and he was staring at(盯着) his phone with a strange look. And then the instructor and I went on with our own business.
“Excuse me sir, but I must take this call …” my father rudely cut in. I was so embarrassed because there were signs all over the DMV (车管局) office that read: CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF. He opened his phone and said, “Hello ” The look on his face was unforgettable as he turned so white. I knew something was wrong. My first thought was that someone was in the hospital or had died. Although no one had died, little did I know that the phone call was going to change my life forever.
The call was from the North Middleton Fire Department and they told my father that he needed to get to the house as soon as possible. My dad was about to shut his phone when suddenly I heard my old sister on the phone. All I could hear was her crying crazily and shouting “Fire”! I had one thought going through my head at that moment, and it was her son, Tom.
Did my sister get him out of the house in time He was only six months old and I loved him more than anything in the world. We ran out of the DMV office both in complete shock. My dad was driving anxiously and quickly. At this point I didn’t even know how to prepare myself. The thought of my house burning to the ground didn’t seem to be real. I kept telling my dad it probably wasn’t even that bad and to stop driving like a crazy man.
The drive from the DMV office to my house is only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like forever. Finally, we were half a mile away from the house.

W: What’s the attraction of coffee shops It’s been said that J K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or &1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

67.All we could see was black smoke filling the sky. We jumped out of the car and started running to the house. The police tried to stop my dad, but he zoomed right by them. I attempted to follow him, but the police officer grabbed my arm. “Let go of me. That’s my house!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Eventually, I caught up with my dad in front of the raging fire and we stood there in surprise. Where is my old sister I asked myself, starting to seek her without delay.
Suddenly, I found my sister sitting in our neighbor’s yard, without Tom beside her. Seeing the sadness in my eyes, my sister told me that Tom was safe in our neighbor’s house. At that point I didn’t care about all my clothes, jewelry, shoes… I was just relieved to hear my family was safe! As all the ashes of our belongings gently landed on us like snowflakes, we just sat there in silence, grateful for the safety of each other, feeling lucky despite the fire.
